8 General Radio Ope ration S t andard Accessories Battery Charging the Battery The Motorola-app roved battery shipped with you r radio is uncharged. Prior to using a new battery , charge it for a minimum of 16 hours to ensure optimum capa city and performance.

Att ach the Antenna Remove the Antenna With the radio turned of f, turn the antenna clockwise to attach it to the radio. 12 General Radio Ope ration Universal Connector Cover The universal co nnector is located on the antenna side of the radio. It is used to connect accessories to the radio. Note: T o prevent damage to the connector , shield it with the connector cover when not in use.

14 General Radio Ope ration Zones and Channels A zone is a grouping of channels. A channel is a gro up of radio characteristics, such as tran smit/receive frequency pairs. Before you use your radio to receive or send messages, you should select the zo ne and ch annel.

After the buttons are pr ogrammed, you can return to the pre- programmed zone and channel with a short press on the programmed Mode Select b utton.

20 Common Radio F eatures Ti m e - o u t Ti m e r The time-out timer turns off your ra dio’ s transmitter . The timer is set for 60 seconds at shipment, but it can be programmed fro m 0 to 7.75 minutes (465 seconds) by a qualified radio te chnician.

24 Common Radio F eatures List s View a Scan List Y ou can view the sta tus of members of one preselected scan list. 1 Select the zone/channel whose scan sta tus you wish to view (see “Zones and Channels” on p age 14). 2 Move the preprogra mmed Scan List Programming switch to the “scan list programm ing” position .

26 Common Radio F eatures Note: In Scan List Programming mode, the T op Side button automatically becomes the Select button. This is only true while in Scan List Programming mode. ASTRO XTS 5000 Model I 27 Common Radio Features Scan The scan feature allows you to monitor traf fic on different channels by scanning a preprogr ammed list of channels. Y our radio can have up to 32 dif ferent scan lists. These list s must be preprogrammed by a qualified radio technician.
28 Common Radio F eatures Conventional Scan Only Make a Dynamic Priority Change While the radio is scanning, the dynamic priority chan ge feature lets you temporarily ch ange any channel in a scan list ( except the Priority 1 channel) to the Priority 2 channel.

30 Common Radio F eatures Answer a Selective Call (ASTRO Conventional Only) A Selective Call is used to call a se lect individual. It is intended to provide privacy and to eliminate the annoyance of having to listen to conversations that are of no interest to you.

T ransmit and receive frequencies are dif ferent. • DIRECT (or T alkaround) operation = Y ou bypass the repeater and connect direct ly to another radio .
32 Common Radio F eatures Smart PTT (Conventional Only) Smart PTT is a p er-channel, progra mmable feature used in conventional radio systems to keep rad io users from talking over other radio conversations. When smart PTT is enabled in yo ur radio, you will not be able to transmit on an active channel.

34 Special Radio Features Managing Encrypt ion Key Loading Refer to the key-varia ble loader (KVL) manua l for equipment connections and setup. Multikey The multikey feature allows yo ur radio to be equipped with as many as 48 dif f erent encryption keys and support s the DES-OFB algorithm.

Select Enable / Disable The dispatcher can classify regrouped radios into either select enabled or select dis abled.
38 Special Radio Features T runking System Controls Failsof t The failsoft system ensures continu ous radio communications during a trunked system failure. If a trunkin g system fails completely , the radio goes into failsoft operation an d automatically s witches to its failsoft channel.
ASTRO XTS 5000 Model I 39 Special Radio Features Site Lock This feature allows your radio to lo ck onto a specific site and not roam among wide-area t alkgroup sites. Th is feature should be used with caution, sinc e it inhibits roaming to anot her site in a wide-a rea system.
40 Special Radio Features Out door Location (using GPS) The Out door Location (using GPS) feature allows ra dio users using the model with display to determine their curr ent location using a location menu. For no n display model, radio location may be reported over-the -air but unknow n to users.

Never poke th ese vents wit h any objects, such as needles, tweezers , or screwdr ivers. This could create leak p aths into the radi o and the radio’s submergibility will be lost.
42 Helpful Tips Cleaning T o clean the external surfaces of your radio: 1 Combine one teaspoon of mild dishwashing deterg ent to one gallon of water (0.5% so lution). 2 Apply the solution sparingly wi th a stif f, non-metallic, short- bristled brush, making sure excess detergent doe s not get entrapped n ear the co nnectors, controls or crevices.

Among the more critical are the regular overch arge of batteries and the average depth of discharge with each cycle. T ypically , the greater the overcharge and the deeper the average discharge, the fewer cy cles a battery will last.
