4 - 16 4.2 FILLING THE FUEL T A NK Add fuel to the fuel tank as needed . See your engine manua l for t he corr ect ty pe and grade of fuel to be used . 1. Put the u nit in an open an d well ventilat ed area prior to re fueling. 2. Stop the engine and set th e parki ng brake .

4 - 18 4.1 1 CHECKING THE T RANSMISSION FLUID (HYD RO) The tran saxle i s filled and tested at the f actory and should not requi re flui d when the u nit is pu t into servic e. Inspec t the tran saxle fo r leaks or damage to the hous ing. If leakage is obser ved, do not operat e until th e leak age is r epaire d.
4 - 19 5. If met er reads b elow 6.0 0 ohms or a bove 8 .00 ohms, th en the cl utch has failed and needs to be replaced . 6. If meter rea ds betwe en 6.00 to 8.00 ohms, proc eed to me asure clu tch cu rrent dr aw . Measure Clutch Cur rent Draw 1. T urn engine off.

5 - 24 5.2 ENGINE REMOVAL 1. Open a nd remov e the hood f rom the un it. 2. Remove the nega tiv e cab le from the battery . 3. Remove the attachm ent from t he unit . 4. Remove the PTO clutch from t he botto m of the engine sheave. R emove the mai n drive bel t from the engi ne sheav e by sett ing the parking br ake.

6 - 26 6.2 FLUIDS/ G REASES The fluid s used i n Hydro-ge ar transax les hav e been carefu ll y se lec ted . If subst itu tio ns ar e made, use equiva lent pr oducts . T ypically , an en gine oil wi th a minimum rating of 55 sus at 210 o F (99 o C) a nd an A PI clas sifica tion of SH/CD is recom mended .
6 - 27 18.Move the transaxle assemb ly to th e rear an d out of the unit frame. 19.With the transa xle ass embly re moved from the unit fram e, plac e the a xle ass embly on a fl at work surface. 6.4 HYDRO T RAN SM ISSION REPAIR (MINOR) Minor repairs m ay be perfor med, foll owing the proc edure s in this s ectio n.
6 - 28 6.5 HYDRO T RAN SM ISSION REPAIR (MAJ OR) 1. Drain t he oil by r emoving the breath er asse mbly and pos itioning the trans missio n so the b reather port is down to al low the oil to drai n thoroug hly . 2. Position and se cure the transmi ssion with the upper h ousing d own to allo w acces s to the twe nty housin g assemb ly cap s crews.
6 - 29 12.Insp ect the differential bevel gea rs by rot ating the axle en ds. 13.In spect the final drive g ear te eth for ex cessi ve wear or da mage. 14.Chec k the differen tial assemb ly screw for prop er torque. The correc t torque s hould be 12-14 ft.
6 - 30 NOTE: The correc t bore di ameter for th e block is 0.6776" to 0.678 4" and the pistons should b e 0.676 7" to 0.6770 ". 26.Remov e the m otor shaft, wa shers a nd bypas s plate fr om the ce nter sec tion and i nspect f or unusua l wear or damage.
6 - 31 1 1. In stall th e swas hplate as sembly into th e hous ing. The slot on the swa shpla te must en gage the slot guide bl ock on the di splace ment co ntrol shaft. Us e a tool such as a screwdriv er to hold the guide bloc k in pos ition whil e instal ling the s washpla te.
6 - 32 26.I nstall t he dif fer ential axle as sembly in to the housin g. 27.I nstall a new filt er onto t he cent er sectio n check valve pl ate. 28.Insta ll the r otors and stato rs. Ins tall a s tator , then a rotor (hub to inside), the n a stator , then a rotor (hub to insi de), then two sta tors.
6 - 33 6.6 HYDRO T RAN SM ISSION INSTALLATION Before install ing the trans axle ass embly in to the u nit frame with the axle s ubassem bly installe d the following items w ill need to be c ompleted. Make s ure the b rake rod h as two f lat washers and a heavy coil sp ring install ed on i t before i nsertin g the transaxl e into the unit fram e.

7 - 35 7.2 GEAR T RANSAXLE REMOVAL (PEERLESS) 1. Place the unit on a flat su rface an d remove the negativ e lead fr om the batte ry and r emove th e spark pl ug le ad from the spark pl ug. 2. Raise a nd suppor t the rea r of the un it. Rem ove the rear wheel with ass oc iate har dwa re .
7 - 36 3. Push the s hifting key s through th e reverse sprock et and pus h the ne utral co llar over the end of the keys a nd pull the neutr al coll ar and r everse gear up against the sho ulder of the shifte r/brake shaft. 4. Insert the co untersha ft into the smaller rev erse gear .
8 - 37 8.1 ST EERING UNIT REM OVAL 1. Open and remo ve th e hood fr om the u nit. Re move the batte ry by fi rst removin g the ne gative ba ttery cable and then the positiv e batte ry cable. R elease the batte ry hold down st rap and rem ove th e battery .
9 - 38 9.1 LIFT SYSTEM OVE R VIEW The lift s ystem o n the unit uses a spring as sisted system to ta ke the wei ght of the attac hment a way from the oper ator . 9.2 LIFT SYSTEM REMOVAL 1. With th e mower att achment r emoved f rom the un it the lift handle should b e left in t he up posi tion.

10 - 40 10.2 FUEL PUMP The impul se sty le fuel pu mp is the most com monly used fu el pump . Impulse fuel pump s may either be mounted external ly onto t he carbu retor fue l inlet or remote ly mounte d. These pum ps are c onnected in the fuel li ne between t he fuel supply and the carbureto r or directly to the fuel i nlet.

11 - 43 Storage: During the off season it is i mportant to have the battery in the s ame good c ondit ion or i t will not deliver po wer when needed. 1. 11 - 45 The star ter soleno id in t he Ar iens equipm ent is a sealed unit use d to actuat e the star ter motor on the engines . This so lenoid m ay hav e three o r four connec tions.The two large connecti ons carr y high current to operate the st arter motor .
11 - 46 1 1.8 DIODES AND RECTIFIERS Diodes are solid state, sem iconduc tor devi ces. They contai n no movi ng parts and condu ct cu rrent better in one dire ction than the oth er . They are electric al "check valves" and p ermit c urrent flow i n one d irectio n, but n ot in the o ther .
