4 - 13 4.10 N EUTRAL ADJUSTMEN T (SPEED CONTROL) 1. Stop the engine. Rem ove the ign ition key . Push th e PTO knob into the "OFF" posit ion. 2. Pl ace jack(s ) under re ar tr ansaxl es onl y . If ja ck(s) are not available, place supp ort blocks under b oth transa xles at the rear of t he unit to rai se the rear wheels off the ground.

5 - 17 5.2 CHECKING ENGINE OIL Check the engine oil dail y prior to use. IMPORT ANT : Nev er operate the engine with the oil below th e low mark on the dips tick. See the engine man ual for o il specifi cations an d oil filter service instruc tions. T o chec k oil level: 1.
5 - 18 5. Remove the throttle a nd choke control fr om the engine. 6. Remove the ele ctri ca l wiring from the engine (charge lead, starter ca ble, fuel soleno id lead, and magn eto kill wir e). 7. Remove fuel line from engine first. Drain fu el from line ba ck into fuel tank.
6 - 19 6.1 CLUTCH T O DECK DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENT 1. Disconnec t idler spring from the fra me, Figure 16 . IMPORT ANT : This re qu ires a s pr ing h ook. DO NOT use a si de cutter pli ers. The belt ca n be easily remo ved from the de ck. 2. Remove belt from el ectric cl utch and d rive pull ey .
6 - 20 6.3 MOWER DECK BELT REPLACEMENT (42" DECK) 1. Remove mower driv e belt (see procedure above). 2. Detach mower d eck from tractor . S ee To R e m o v e 42" Mow er Deck in Service and A djustme nts . 3. Remove sh eav e cover s. 4. Loosen belt idle r pivot and slott ed idler lock nu t.
6 - 21 NOTE: The 42" dec k uses a r etainer hub and blade tray with a rectan gular hole. This feature h elps ens ure the blad es will be 9 0 o to each o ther . 2. T i ghten the loc k nut(s) to a torque of 60 ft-lbs (82 Nm). 3. Put the i gnition w ire(s) back o n the spark plug(s) .

7 - 24 7.2 HYDRO-GEAR FLUID RECOMMENDATIONS The fluid s used in Hy dro-Gea r transaxles have bee n carefu lly se lected, an d only eq uivalen t or better produc ts should b e used. T ypically , an en gine oil wi th a minimum ra ting of 55 sus at 210 o F an d an API c lassification o f SH/CD is recom mended.
7 - 25 Lubric ate the ne w seal prio r to instal lation wit h a petrol eum jell y . Wrap the shaft spline wi th a thin p lastic or c ellophane tape to pr event da mage to the new seal lip during instal lation. Slide the seal o ver the sh aft and pre ss it into t he housin g bore.
7 - 26 16.Remov e the motor s haft, wash ers and byp ass plate fr om the ce nter secti on and inspe ct for unusua l wear or da mage. Insp ect the cen ter sec tion run ning sur faces fo r unusual wear or da mage. 17.Remov e the pump block a ssembly , block thrust washer and sp ring from the inpu t shaft and inspect for unus ual wear or damage.

Reposi tion the upper housing and inst all the cradle bearin gs. 5. Install the slot guide blo ck onto the d isplaceme nt contr ol shaft.
7 - 28 Check the oil le vel after fully p urging th e unit of a ir . It should be betw een 1.25" a nd 1.62" ( 3.175-4 .1 1 cm) from th e top of the h ousing. After ins talling the IHT , make sure all linkages and actuato rs and func tioning pr operly .
8 - 29 8.1 PTO JACKSHAFT REMOVAL 1. Place the unit o n a flat level s urface, and lower the mowe r pan. 2. Open th e front pa nel by remo ving the two c ap screws in the lif t handle c over plate . Remove th e two ta p tites in the front pan el and remov e panel expos ing the bat tery and ele ctrical sy stem.
9 - 30 9.1 LIFT SYSTEM Refer to Figu re 29 for the l ift system. The mower pan lift sy stem is a manual lift system contro lled by the operator . 9.2 LIFT SYSTEM REMOVAL 1. Remove the mower deck from th e unit pr ior to lift system re moval . 2. Place th e lift handle in the highest cut ting heigh t availab le.

10 - 32 10.2 FUEL PUMP The impul se style f uel pump i s the most c ommonly used fu el pump. Im pulse fue l pumps m ay either b e mounted externally onto the c arburetor fuel inlet o r remote ly mounte d. These pumps are connec ted in the fuel li ne between t he fuel su pply and the carbur etor or directly to the fuel inl et.
11 - 33 1 1.1 T OOLS There are some spe cialized t ools and test equip ment that are needed for e lectrical repair wo rk. A brie f desc r ipti on of thes e follows . Long or needle nose pliers - use d to connect or bend wires and connect ors in cl ose quarter s.
11 - 34 V oltage Measurement There are two basic rules to be remembe red when using a voltmete r . A volt meter mea sures t he voltag e difference between the test leads a nd the vol tmeter is always connected a cross the circuit unde r test.
11 - 35 Clean Battery Corrosi on and dirt o n the ba ttery and term inals can cause the battery t o "leak" po wer . • Re move batt ery . (See B attery R emova l and Inst allation ) • Rins e the battery wi th plain w ater and dry . • Clea n termina ls and batter y cable en ds with wi re brush until br ight.
11 - 36 Electrolyte Level Ever y 25 hour s of operati on, chec k electr olyte lev el of each c ell by remov ing caps on e at a time. The electr olyte l evel sho uld be at l evel in dicated. U se distil led water to fill each c ell if neede d. Install and tighten each cap after checki ng.
11 - 37 T o jump start th e battery: 1. Ensure batte ry is not fro zen. If the flui d is frozen, remov e battery from unit and a llow to thaw before char ging. 2. Connect the posit ive (+) jum per cable to the positive (+) terminal o f the discha rged battery .
11 - 38 Ignition Switch NOTE: Refer t o the wiring diagram of the unit involved to deter mine switch function s and tes t using th e meth- ods de scribed . The igniti on switch incorpo rates a numbe r of functions, althoug h not all f unctions ar e used on all equipme nt.
11 - 39 1 1.6 LIGHTING CIRCUITS Lightin g circ uits are s imple ci rcuits an d easies t to troubl e shoot in mo st equipm ent. They c onsist of th e lights connect ed in par allel; a normally o pen sw itch, a protec tive fuse an d a sour ce of power ( battery or engine alte r nato r).
11 - 40 STEP 1 Check out the batte ry . Usin g a hydrome ter on al l the battery cells to see if one or more is ba d. Also use a voltme ter to chec k for prope r voltag e. Replace the battery if necess ary and/or charge to p roper level. Refer to Ba ttery .
