GB - 6 Read, understand and f ollow all safety practices in Ow ner/Operator Manual b efore beginning assembly . Failure to f ollow instructions could result in personal injury and/or damage to unit. If the operator or the mechanic cannot read the manual, it is the owner ’s responsibility to explain it to them.
GB - 7 If you strike an object, or if equipment vibrates abnormally , stop engine at once, wait for moving parts to stop and disc onnect wire from spark plug. Rep air any damage before restarting unit. Keep rear door cl osed when engine is running unless the grass bag is in place.
GB - 8 AL WA YS drain fuel outdoors away from ignition sources. AL WA YS shut off engine , and remove key , and close fuel shutoff valve when transporting unit on a t ruck or trailer . Avoid Electric Shock. DO NOT disconnect wire from spark plug while e ngine is running.
GB - 9 CARTON CONTE NTS ASSEMBL Y 1. Remove m ower and handlebar from carton. 2. Install the handlebars on the pivot pins attached to the handlebar upright s . NOTE: Make sur e the cables (connected to the handlebar) are on the l eft side of t he unit.
GB - 10 7. F ill engine crankcase with oil. See engine manual. 8. Set -up mowe r for bagging, side discharge or m ulching. See MOWE R SET - UP on page 14. NOTE: Bagging is not standard on push models. See ACCESSORIES on page 2 4 for kit part numb ers.

GB - 12 CONTROLS AND FEA TURES See Figure 6 for locations. Engine/Blade Control The engine/blade control must be held against the handlebar to start the engine and blade. Engine/blade control feature on mower stops engine and blade within 3 secon ds whenever operator releases handlebar .
GB - 13 OPTIONAL CONTROLS Primer Bulb (91 1 150, 151 , 152, 153) Push the primer bulb in to add fuel f or easier engine start. Wheel Drive Contr ol (self-pro pelled models) NOTE: Engine must be running for wheel drive to propel unit.
GB - 14 Ignition Sw itch (91 1 154) A removable key operates the ignition switch. T urn the key to the s t art position (2) to start the unit. The key will spring bac k to the “RUN” position. RUN Position (1): All controls are operable. ST ART Po sit ion (2): S tarter t urns over the engine.
GB - 15 T o Side Discharge See Figure 1 1 on page 15. 1. Shut of f unit. 2. Remove gras s bag. 3. Lift rear door and i n stall m ulch plug (see below). 4. Remove the kn ob from and then hold open the m ulch cover . 5. Install the side discharge chute on stud on the m ower .
GB - 16 EMERG ENCY STOPPIN G T o stop the m ower in an emerge ncy: 1. Release the engine/blade control. 2. Release the wheel drive control (self- propelled models). 3. Allow all moving part s to stop before leaving operator ’s position. ST ARTING AND SHUT OFF See Figure 6 for all Controls and Features.
GB - 17 Ariens Dealers will provide any service, parts or adjustments which may be required to keep your unit operating at peak ef ficiency . Should engine require se rvice, contact an Ariens Dealer or an authorized engine manufacturer's service center .
GB - 18 Sharpen the Mowe r Blades 1. Remove m ower blade from unit. Discard mower blade if: • More than 1/2 in. (1.27 cm) of metal is removed. • Air lift s become eroded. • Blade is bent or bro ken. 2. Sharpen mower blade by removing an equal amount of mat erial from each end of mower blade.
GB - 19 CHECK SP ARK PLUG S park plug should be replaced every 100 hours of operation or each year . NOTE: Loose spark plug wire terminals can cause sparking. Replace terminal if damaged. CHECK ENGINE COOLING T o prevent overheat ing, air must circulate freely around the c ooling fins, cylinder head and block.
GB - 20 DRIVE BEL T REPLACEMENT (self-pro pelled mode ls) T o remove drive belt: 1. Disconnect spark plug w ire from spark plug. 2. Remove t ransmission cover . 3. Disconnect idler ret urn spring from idler arm. See F igure 16. 4. Disconnect the wheel drive cable from transmission mount, and then disconnect drive c able spring from idler arm.
GB - 21 2. Connect the wheel drive cable spring to the idler arm as shown in Figure 19, and then connect t he wheel drive cable to the transmission mount. See Figure 16. 3. Connect the idler return spring to the idler arm. 4. Install the blade adapter and blade on the crankshaft.
GB - 22 WHEEL DRIVE CONTROL ADJUSTMENT (self-propelled models) See Figure 22. NOTE: The unit should stop immediately when the wheel drive control is released, and the unit should not creep forward when the wheel drive control is dis engaged with the engine running.
GB - 23 IMPORT ANT : NEVER spray unit with high- pressure wa ter or store unit outdoors. S tore mower in a coo l, dry , protected location. Cleaning Allow unit to cool. Clean unit thoroughly with mild soap and low pressure water. Brush off dirt and debris from all surfaces.
GB - 24 Gras s does not disperse evenly 1. T oo much grass is being removed per c utting. 2. G rass is too wet. 3. Mowing speed is too fast. 1. Raise cutting height. 2. Allow grass to dry . 3. Mow slower . Mower does not bag clippings 1. Grass bag is overfilled.
