Black plate (124,1) q Parking Brake WARNING Before leaving the drive r's seat, always put the key to LOCK position, set the parking bra ke and make sure the shift lever is in P with an automatic .
Black plate (125,1) q Brake System W arning Light This warning has the following functions: Parking brake warning The light comes on when the parking brake is applied with the ignition switch in the ST AR T or ON position . It goes off when the parking brake is fully released.
Black plate (126,1) WARNING Do not rely on ABS as a substitute for safe driving: The ABS canno t compensate for unsafe and reckless driving, excessive speed, tailgating (followi ng another vehicle too clos ely), driving on ice and snow, and hy droplaning (reduced tire friction and road contact because of water on the road sur face).
Black plate (127,1) WARNING Do not drive with both the ABS warning light and brake warning light illuminated. Have the vehicle towed to an Authorized Mazda Dealer to have the brakes inspected as soon as possible: Driving when the brake system warning ligh t and ABS warning light are illuminated at the same time is dangerous.
Black plate (128,1) (6-speed transaxle) V ehicl es with 6-speed transaxle are equipped with a device to prevent shifting to R (reverse) by mis take. Push the shift lever downwar d and shift to R.
Black plate (129,1) Downshifting When you must slow down in heavy traffic or on a steep upg rade , downshift before the engine star ts to overwork. This reduces the c hance of stalling and gives better acceleration when you need more speed. On a steep downgrade , downshifting helps maintain safe speed and prolongs brake life.
Black plate (130,1) Automatic T ransaxle Controls Indicates that you must depress the brake pedal to shift (The ignition switch must be in the ON position).
Black plate (131,1) q T ransaxle Ranges The shift lever must be in P or N to operate the star ter . P (Park) P locks the transaxle and prevents the front wheels from rotating.
Black plate (132,1) q Shift-Lock System The shift-lock system prevents shifting out of P unless the brake pedal is depressed. T o shift from P: 1. Depress and hold the brake pedal. 2. Start the engine. 3. Move the shift lever . NOTE l When the ignition switch is in the ACC or LOCK position, the shift lever cannot be shifted fr om P .
Black plate (133,1) Indicators Shift position indicator In manual shif t mode, the “ M ” of the shift position indicator in the instrument panel illuminates.
Black plate (134,1) Manually Shiftin g down (M5 * → M4 → M3 → M2 → M1) T o shift down to a lower gear, tap the shift lever forward ( ) once. * 2.

Black plate (141,1) T raction Control System (TCS) í The T racti on Control System (TCS) enhances traction and safety by controlling engine torque and braki ng. When the TCS detects driving wheel slippage, it lowers engine torque and operates the brakes to prevent loss of traction.
Black plate (142,1) Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) í The Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) automatically contr ols braking and engine torque in conjunctio n with systems such as ABS and TCS to help control side slip when driving on slippery surfa ces, or during sudden or evasive maneuvering, enhancing vehicle safet y .
Black plate (143,1) q DSC OFF Indicator Light This indicator light stays on for a few seconds when the igni tion switch is turne d to the ON position. It also comes on when the DSC OFF switch is pressed and TCS/DSC is switched off (page 5-25).
Black plate (144,1) Tir e Pressure Monitoring System í The tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) monitors the pressure for each tire. If tire pressure is too low in one or more tires, the system will inform the driver via the warning light in the instrument panel and by the warning beep sound.
Black plate (145,1) CAUTION Ø Each tire, inclu ding the spare (if provided), should be checked monthly when cold and inflated to the inflation pressu re recommended by the vehicle manufactu rer on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressu re label.
Black plate (146,1) q Tir e Pressure Monitoring System W arning Light This warning light illumi nates for a few seconds when the igni tion switch is turne d to the ON position. Thereafter , the warning light illuminates and a beep is heard when tire pressure is too low in one or more tires, and flashes when there is a system malfunct ion.
Black plate (147,1) Adjust the tire pressure to the correct tire pressure. Refer to the specification charts (page 10-8). CAUTION When replacing/repai ring the tires or wheels or both, have the work done by an Authorized Mazda Dealer, or the tire pressure sensors may be damaged.
Black plate (148,1) If the warning ligh t illuminates again even after the tire press ures are adjusted, there may be a tire puncture. Replace the punctured tire with the temporary spare tire (page 7-8). NOTE A tir e pr essure sensor is not installed to the temporary spar e tir e.
Black plate (149,1) When changing tires yourself If you or some one else changes tires, you or someone else can also undertake the steps for the TPMS to complete the ID signal code regis tration. 1. After tires have been changed, turn the ignition switch to the ON position, then turn it back to the ACC or LOC K position.
