7 INST ALLA TION Benc h mounting When the tool is shipped, the handle is lock ed in the lowered position by the stopper pin. Release the stopper pin b y lower- ing the handle slightly and pulling the stopper pin. This tool should be bolted with f our bolts to a lev el and stable surf ace using the bolt holes provided in the tool’ s base.
8 If the see-through blade guard becomes dirty , or sawdust adheres to it in such a wa y that the blade is no longer easily visible , unplug the saw and clean the guard carefully with a damp cloth. Do not use solvents or an y petroleum-based cleaners on the plastic guard.
9 Maintaining maximum cutting capacity This tool is fa ctor y adjusted to provide the maximum cutting capacity f or a 305 mm (12 ” ) saw blade . When installing a new b lade, alwa ys check the lo wer limit position of the blade and if necessary , adjust it as follo ws: First, unplug the tool.
10 Adjusting the bevel angle T o adjust the bev el angle, loosen the lev er at the rear of the tool counterclockwise . Push the handle to the left to tilt the saw b lade until the pointer points to the desired angle on the be vel scale. Then tighten the le ver clockwise firmly to secure the arm.
11 • F or your saf ety , this tool is equipped with a lock-off button which pre vents the tool from unintended starting. NEVER use the tool if it runs when you simply pull the s witch tr igger without pressing the lock-off b utton. Return tool to a Makita ser vice center for proper repairs BEFORE fur ther usage.
12 Lock the handle in the r aised position by pushing in the stop- per pin. T o remove the b lade, use the sock et wrench to loosen the he x bolt holding the center cover b y tur ning it counterclock- wise.
13 Return the blade guard and center cov er to its or iginal posi- tion. Then tighten the he x bolt clockwise to secure the center cov er . Release the handle from the raised position by pulling the stopper pin. Lower the handle to mak e sure that the blade guard mo ves properly .
14 CA UTION: • When cutting long workpieces, use suppor ts that are as high as the top surf ace lev el of the tur n base. Do not rely solely on the vertical vise and/or hor izontal vise to secure the workpiece. Thin material tends to sag. Suppor t wor kpiece ov er its entire length to av oid blade pinch and possib le KICKBA CK.
15 Press the workpiece flat against the guide fence and the turn base. P osition the workpiece at the desired cutting position and secure it firmly by tightening the vise knob . CA UTION: • The workpiece must be secured firmly against the tur n base and guide f ence with the vise dur ing all operations.
16 When cutting long workpieces, use the holder-rod assemb ly (optional accessor y). It consists of two holder assemb lies and two rods 12. CA UTION: • Alwa ys suppor t long workpieces lev el with the top surf ace of the tur n base for accurate cuts and to pre vent dangerous loss of control of the tool.
17 3. Bevel cut Loosen the le ver and tilt the saw b lade to set the bev el angle (Refer to the pre viously cov ered “ Adjusting the bev el angle ” ). Be sure to retighten the le ver firmly to secure the selected be vel angle saf ely . Secure the work- piece with a vise.
18 5. Cutting cro wn and cove moldings Crown and co ve moldings can be cut on a compound miter saw with the moldings laid flat on the turn base. There are two common types of crown moldings and one type of cov e moldings; 52/38 ° wall angle crown molding, 45 ° wall angle cro wn molding and 45 ° wall angle co ve molding.
19 Example: In the case of cutting 52/38 ° type crown molding f or position (1) in Fig. A: • Tilt and secure be vel angle setting to 33.9 ° LEFT . • Adjust and secure miter angle setting to 31.

22 Crown molding stoppers (optional accessories) allow easier cuts of crown molding without tilting the sa w blade . Install them on the base as shown in the figures. P osition crown molding with its W ALL CONT A CT EDGE against the guide f ence and its CEILING CONT A CT EDGE against the crown molding stoppers as sho wn in the figure.
23 CA UTION: • Use straight wood of e ven thic kness as the wood f acing. • Use screws to attach the wood f acing to the guide f ence. The screws should be installed so that the scre w heads are below the surf ace of the wood f acing. • When the wood f acing is attached, do not tur n the tur n base with the handle lowered.
24 Carrying tool Make sure that the tool is unplugged. Secure the b lade at 0 ° be vel angle and the turn base at r ight miter angle fully . Lower the handle fully and lock it in the lo wered position by pushing in the stopper pin. Carr y the tool by holding both sides of the tool base as shown in the figure.
25 Lower the handle fully and loc k it in the lowered position by pushing in the stopper pin. Square the side of the blade with the f ace of the guide f ence using a tr iangular rule, try-square, etc. Then securely tighten the hex bolts on the guide f ence in the order from the r ight side.
26 Make sure that the pointer on the turn base point to 0 ° on the be vel scale on the arm. If it does not point to 0 ° , loosen the screw which secures the pointer and adjust the pointer so that it will point to 0 ° . (2) 45 ° be vel angle Adjust the 45 ° be vel angle only after perf or ming 0 ° be vel angle adjustment.
27 After use • After use, wipe off chips and dust adhering to the tool with a cloth or the like . Keep the b lade guard clean according to the directions in the pre viously covered section titled “ Blade guard ” . Lubricate the sliding por tions with machine oil to prev ent rust.
