Har dwar e Setup Before Y ou Begin The EtherF ast 10/100 LAN Cards are equipped with an RJ-45 port that automatically adjusts to either 10Mbps or 100Mbps speeds at any duple x.
Using the Wake-On-LAN Feature The EtherF ast 10/100 LAN Card suppor ts both Magic P acket and Link Change remote wake-up e vents. Only install the W ake-On-LAN wires if your mother- board supports remote wake-up e vents.
5. Carefully slide the EtherF ast card into your PC's slot. Make sure that all of its pins are touching the slot's con- tacts. After the card is f irmly in place, secure its fasten- ing tab to your PC's chassis with a mounting scre w . 6.
Expanding Y our Network in the Future If you w ant to add additional computers to your netw ork in the future, all you need are more EtherF ast 10/100 cards and 100BaseTX cables. Simpl y plug the new card(s) into your computer and run a cable from the card to one of the 5-P ort hub's open por ts.
Preparing to Install the Software Setting up the EtherF ast card's software in volves installing a netw ork dri ver onto y our computer . The driv er will allo w the card to communicate with your Netw ork Operating System softw are package, or NOS.
W indows 98 Setup After installing the EtherF ast hardware in y our comput- er , follo w these instr uctions for installing the network driv er . The installation procedure for the netw ork driver will vary slightl y depending on the version of W indows 98 you are using and y our current system conf iguration.
5. The following windo w will appear , make sure that "Flopp y disk driv es" is selected , and click Next to con- tinue. 6. W indo ws will begin searching your dri ves for the cor- rect device dri vers. A message will appear that reads W indows found the Linksys LNE100TX F ast Ethernet Adapter driver .
Pr eparing Windo ws 98 F or Use on a Networ k -- Step 1 Once you are back at the Windo ws 98 desktop, you can make an y necessary changes to your system's netw ork settings by clicking on y our taskbar's Star t button, then Settings , then Contr ol P anel , and then the Networ k icon.
Pr eparing Windo ws 98 for Use on a Netw ork - - Step 2 Before enabling F ile and Printer Sharing, you should prepare your computer to be used with an y f ile servers that ma y be on the netw ork. Using the Card with a NetW are File Serv er 3.11 or 3.
Preparing to Use File and Printer Sharing 1. Start up W indows 98. If y ou are asked to lo g in, be sure to giv e your correct username and passw ord. 2. T o set up sharing for the f irst time on a computer, click on Start , Settings , Control P anel , then double- click on Netw ork .
Enabling File Sharing After follo wing steps 1-5 on the pre vious page, double- click on your My Computer icon. A window of a vail- able disk dri ves will appear . Using your right mouse button, click once on the driv e that you w ant to make a vailab le to other users.
How T o Share Printers After follo wing steps 1-5 on page 15, double-click on your My Computer icon. Click on the Printers folder . A windo w of a v ailable printers will appear . Using your right mouse button, click once on the printer that you want to share with other users.
W indows 95 Setup After installing the EtherF ast hardware in y our comput- er , follo w these instr uctions for installing the network driv er . Windows 95 V ersion A Setup 1. W indo ws 95 will detect the EtherF ast card and dis- pla y a New Hardw are F ound windo w as sho wn below . 2. Put the EtherF ast Card software disk into dri ve A. Using your mouse, select the Driver fr om disk pr o vided by har dwar e manufacturer option on the screen, then click OK .
Windows 95 V ersion B Setup 1. While the Update Device Dri ver W izard windo w is visible, put the EtherF ast Card software disk into driv e A and click on Next . 2. When the next windo w appears, click on the Other Locations button. T ype a: in the Location box and click on the OK but- ton.

W indows NT 4.0 Setup The instructions that follow e xplain ho w to set up an NT 4.0 server/w orkstation. Y ou should ha ve your original Windo ws NT CD-ROM handy during the installation, as you might be ask ed to supply it. Alw a ys contact your netw ork administrator or consult your NT documentation if y ou ha ve questions.
1. After clicking on Ye s , the Netw ork Setup W izard windo w will appear . 2. Put a checkmark next to the W ir ed to the networ k option , then click on Next . 3. When the next screen appears, click on the Select fr om list... button to select a netw ork adapter .
6. Click Next , then put checkmarks ne xt to all of the netw ork protocols that you w ant to install. See your Microsoft W indo ws NT user guide(s) or talk to your netw ork administrator for more information about net- w ork protocols. When you're f inished , click on Next .
10. NT will cop y the necessary network dri vers to y our computer . When the cop ying is complete, you will see a list of installed bindings. Y ou can change the bindings settings as necessary if needed. When all of the settings are acceptable, click on Ne xt , then Next again to start the NT netw ork.
Installing the EtherFast Netw ork Driver in NT 4.0 Since NT netw orking is already installed , you'll onl y need to install the EtherF ast Card netw ork adapter and conf igure your netw ork settings to get NT networking up and running. T o do this: 1.
6. When NT asks you for the media type or type of cabling, choose A utoDetect and click OK . 7. Choose the services that you want to install. Y our Microsoft NT user guide(s) contain information about ho w services work. When you're f inished , click on Next , follo wed b y Next again.
10. NT will cop y the necessary network dri vers to y our computer . When the cop ying is complete, you will see a list of installed bindings. Y ou can change the bindings settings as necessary if needed. When all of the settings are acceptable, click on Ne xt , then Next again to start the NT netw ork.
W indows for W orkgr oups Setup After installing the EtherF ast card hardware in y ou com- puter , follo w the instr uctions below to install the EtherF ast Card's W indo ws for W orkg roups netw ork driv er from the card's softw are disk.
After the Sharing windo w appears, use your mouse to put a checkmark next to an y of the follo wing options that you w ant: ... give others access to my files. ... allow other s to print to my printer(s). 6. When you're f inished , click the OK button.
Novell NetW ar e Setup The instructions below co ver the follo wing versions of No vell NetW are: · NetW are workstations for DOS & Windo ws 3.x · Client32 for W indo ws 95 & W indows 98 · 3.
3. When you type install, a ne w directory called DIA G will be created on your C: dri ve, and the DIA G setup and diagnostic program will be copied to it.
During the installation, your AUT OEXEC.B A T and CONFIG.SYS f iles will be automatically modif ied. The old versions of these f iles will be sav ed as A UT OEX- EC.LNK and CONFIG.LNK for later retriev al if you need to rev ert to them in the future. When the installation is complete, press OK , then select Exit from the menu to return to DOS.
Novell Client32 Setup for W indows 95 and 98 Client32 driv ers are required for connecting to a 4.x or 5.0 server while in Windo ws 95 only . If you ar e using W indows 98 , you must obtain the latest version of Client32. The installation is very similar to that of W indo ws 95 OSR2.
There are cur rently tw o versions of W indo ws 95: · the original release (version A) · a later release (also kno wn as OSR2, or version B) The Client32 installation procedure will vary from this point forward depending on the v ersion of W indows that you're using.
8. Click on the Other Locations or Specify Location button when it appears. Put the EtherF ast card disk into driv e A. T ype a:client32 and press Enter . Windo ws 95 will locate the client driv er . Click on the Finish button. If you recei ve a Msgsr v32 er ror message, don't w or r y -- just click on the Ignor e button.
Installing a 3.12 Server The EtherF ast Card netw ork driv er is installed during the NetW are installation process. During the setup you ma y want to refer to y our NetW are 386 v3.12 Installation Manual for help. Y ou will also be using Conf igDisk during the setup.
5. At the ser ver command line, type: LOAD c:LNE100NBI31X.NLM LOAD c:LNE100MSM31X.NLM LOAD c:LNE100ETHERTSM.NLM LOAD c:LNE100LNE100TX.LAN 6. Bind a protocol to the driv er . F or example: BIND IPX TO LNE100TX NET=XX where XX is the lo gical network address for the frame type in your LO AD command.
Installing a 4.x Server The EtherF ast Card netw ork driv er is installed during the NetW are installation process. During the setup you ma y want to refer to y our NetW are 386 v4.0 installation Manual for help. Y ou will also be using Conf igDisk during the setup.
Installing a 5.0 Server F ollow these directions to set up a No vell NetW are 5.0 server . 1. Insert the EtherF ast 10/100 LAN Card pro gram disk into driv e A. 2. At the NetW are prompt, run the INST ALL.NLM pro- gram by typing: <server name>: LO AD INST ALL and press Enter .
The setup is complete. If you notice e xcessiv e “Tx FIFO Underflo w” or “Rx FIFO Overflo w” counts on your server in the LAN/W AN menu of your driv er custom counters and you ha ve a PCI computer with a Saturn or Mercur y chipset, try using the keyw ord TURBO w hen loading the driv er .
W ake-On-LAN The EtherF ast 10/100 LAN Card suppor ts both Magic P acket and Link Change remote wake-up e vents. Magic P acket is a type of W ake-On-LAN ev ent devel- oped by AMD . Basicall y , an administrator can send a “wak e-up” packet to a specif ic MAC address on the net- w ork.
There are also tw o dif ferent types of Remote W ake-Up compatible motherboards -- high po wer and lo w po w er . Remote W ake-Up is a little different than PME, but both ev ents achie ve the same goal. Of course, e very LAN is built differentl y , and ev ery administrator uses different softw are to manage the network.
Setting Up Y our EtherFast LAN Card f or Wake- On-LAN Use 1. Use the diagram below to locate the W OL pins and the jumpers on the EtherF ast LAN Card. 2.
Once your jumpers are set, be sure to write do wn the MA C address of the netw ork card. It is either silkscreened on the card itself or it is noted on a sticker attached to the card. If no MA C address is gi ven with the card , you can either run the card’ s diagnostics (page 59), or run one of the programs described in the next section.
Appendix Windows 98 or 95/NT 4.0 Client Setup If you are installing the EtherF ast LAN Card in a W indo ws 95 or 98 PC that you plan on logging into a NT 4.0 f ile ser ver , follow the directions belo w . 1. F ollow the Windo ws 95 setup instr uctions or the W indo ws 98 setup instr uctions 2.
If Access Control is g ray ed out and cannot be selected , refer to Problem 5 in the T roubleshooting section. 7. When you’ re done, click OK . When ask ed if you want to restart your PC, choose to do so. The NT por- tion of the W indo ws setup is complete.
Novell 3.x Client Setup for W indows 98 or 95 The instructions below e xplain ho w to set up the regular No vell NetW are 3.x client for use on a W indo ws 98 or 95 PC. If you are installing NetW are’ s Client32 software instead , follo w the instructions on page 38.
T wisted-Pair Cabling There are different grades, or categories, of twisted-pair cabling. Cate gory 5 is the most reliable and widely compatible, and is highl y recommended. Categor y 3 is a good second choice. Straight-through cables are used for connecting computers to a hub .
T o f igure out which wire is wire number 1, hold the cable so that the end of the plastic RJ-45 tip (the part that goes into a wall jack f irst) is facing aw ay from y ou. Flip the clip so that the cop- per side faces up (the springy clip will no w be parallel to the floor).
T r oubleshooting T roubleshooting hints for Windo ws can be found belo w . If you are using Windo ws NT , NetW are, or another net- w ork operating system, skip to the Card Diagnostics instructions on page 58.
Pr oblem 3 : The W indo ws Logon screen doesn’ t appear after you restart your computer . Solutions Click on Start , Shut Do wn , then Close All Pr ograms and Log on as a Different User . If this doesn’ t solve the problem, y our PC’ s manuf acturer may ha ve disabled W indo ws’ netw orking.
Solutions Make sure that the cab les are connected cor rectly . Make sure you are getting Link or Activity lights on both the EtherF ast Card and your hub . T ry changing to a new cable that y ou kno w is working. Y our w orkgroup name may be dif ferent from other com- puters on your netw ork.
Running the Car d’ s Diagnostics If you suspect that there ma y be a problem with the EtherF ast Card , you can use the DIA G diagnostic pro- gram on the EtherF ast Card disk to test the card's inter- nal and external netw ork functions. T o r un the program, star t up your computer in DOS.

Starting Over in W indows Installing Windows Network Components fr om Scratch If you e xperience installation diff iculties, you ma y need to re-install all of the W indo ws networking components from scratch.
In some cases, remo ving one of these components may in turn automatically remo ve other components as w ell. 6. F or PCs with Dial-Up Networking and/or an A OL adapter , remo ve any instance of the name Linksys, all IPX/SPX protocols, all NetBEUI, all Clients, and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Netw orks.
