5 Apple Ser ver Diagnostics te sts your server for hardware issue s. Apple Server Diagnostics, also referred t o as Ser ver Diagnostics , runs a customizable set of tests to help y ou diagnose issues .
Y ou can run Apple Ser ver Diagnostics in Extensible F irmware Interface (EFI), which is referred t o as Ser ver Diagnostics EFI, or in Mac OS X Ser ver , which is ref erred to as Ser ver Diagnostics Mac OS X. By running Ser ver Diagnostics EFI, you can diagnose hardware issues that prev ent Mac OS X Ser ver from succe ssfully star ting up .

Chapter 1 Overview and Requirements 9 Requirements Before you can run Server Diagnostics, you must meet general, storage device , and local and remote requiremen ts. General Requirements T o run Ser ver Diagnostics, you need the following: A Mac Pro with Mac OS X Server v1 0.
Local and Remote Requiremen ts T o run Ser ver Diagnostics locally on the server , you need to connect a keyboard, mouse, and display . T o run Ser ver Diagnostics remotely , you need the f ollowing: A Macintosh computer with Mac OS X v1 0.6 or la ter installed.
11 Before y ou can run Ser ver Diagnostics , you must set up your testing en vironmen t and install Ser ver Diagnostics. Make sure you meet Ser ver Diagnostics requir ements before a ttempting setup and installation. F or information, see “Requirements ” on page 9.
W ARNING: The follo wing instructions could erase all data on your storage device . Back up critical data before performing the following instructions. T o create and forma t empty storage device volume s: 1 Inser t the Mac OS X Server Install DVD . 2 Restart the ser ver and hold down the server ’ s Option key while it restarts.
Chapter 2 Setup and Installation 13 If you’ re installing Ser ver Diagnostics Mac OS X on a volume , select the volume and choose Mac OS Extended ( Journaled). 11 Click P artition. 12 Choose Disk Utility > Quit Disk Utilit y , and then choose Mac OS X Installer > Quit Mac OS X Installer .
5 If you want to c onnect a host computer directly to the ser ver and the host comput er doesn ’t pro vide DHCP ser vice on the port used to directly connect to the ser ver , do the following: a Open T extEdit (located in /Applications/). b In a new le, enter an IP addre ss that’ s not in use by the host c omputer .

10 Open a Finder window and drag the AppleServerDiagnostics.app le from /Diagnostics/ on the Admin T ools disc to the /Applications/ f older on the ser ver .
Chapter 2 Setup and Installation 17 T o set up a NetBoot ser ver: 1 Open Ser ver A dmin (located in /Applications/Server/). 2 If the ser ver that will host NetBoot isn ’t listed, do the following: a Click the Add (+) button and choose A dd Ser ver .
Deleting the Ser ver Diagnostics NetBoot Image Y ou can ’t use System Image Utility to delete the Server Diagnostics NetBoot image. Instead , you must delete the Server Diagnostics NetBoot image in .

If you insert the Admin T ools CD in another computer and run Remote Install Mac OS X (located in /Applications/Utilities/ on the c omputer), you can hold down the Option key and choose the Administration T ools volume bef ore star ting up Mac OS X to run Ser ver Diagnostics EFI from the disc .
Chapter 3 Starting Up Ser ver Diagnostics 21 Y ou must be able to authenticat e as the root account to change the startup disk using the command-line interface. Note: The T erminal commands described in this task are case-sensitive , and must be entered as sho wn.
T o temporarily change the startup disk at startup: 1 Restart the ser ver . 2 While the server is restar ting , hold down the Option key until a list of v olumes appears. If you ’ re asked to authenticat e, enter the rmware password and click the C ontinue (right-arrow) button.

Using Ser ver Diagnostics EFI In Ser ver Diagnostics EFI, the test controls and test selections are s plit across two panes. Regardless of which pane you’ re look ing at , you can do the follo wing:.
Chapter 4 Using Server Diagnostics 29 Customizing Server Diagnostics EFI T est Settings Y ou can customize Ser v er Diagnostics test settings by choosing which tests ar e run, whether to loop tests , and whether to stop or con tinue testing when an error occurs.
Clearing the T est Log The test log con tains all test messages tha t have occurred during the current Ser ver Diagnostics session. If you quit Ser ver Diagnostics , the log is cleared. T o clear the test log without quitting Ser ver Diagnostics , click Clear T est Data.

Customizing Server Diagnostics Mac OS X T est Settings Y ou can customize Ser v er Diagnostics test settings in several wa ys by choosing which tests are run, whether to loop tests, and whether to stop or continue testing when an error occurs.
Chapter 4 Using Server Diagnostics 33 W orking with T est Groups Y ou can create test gr oups based on your customized te st settings. These are similar to template s because they allow you t o reuse your test settings without ha ving to change each setting individually .
Viewing Logs Y ou can view the following types of logs in Ser ver Diagnostics Mac OS X: Log type Description T est All messages from te sts run in the current Server Diagnostics Mac OS X session. Hardware Info Listing and description of all installed hardware .
Chapter 4 Using Server Diagnostics 35 Setting Log Pr eference s Y ou can set up log preference s so the Ser ver Diagnostics test logs ar e saved to a le at a location you choose. Ser ver Diagnostics test logs are cr eated when you start a Ser ver Diagnostics session.
T o set log preference s: 1 In Ser ver Diagnostics Mac OS X, cho ose AppleServerDiagnostics > Pref erences . 2 T o automatically sav e test logs, selec t “ Auto-sa ve test log .” If you don ’t select this option, you can ’ t per form the steps that f ollow .
