Power Mac G4 Cube Optical Drive - 2 Removing the Computer Cor e Fr om the Enclosur e W arning: Always shut do wn y our computer before opening it to a v oid damaging its internal components or causing injury . After y ou shut down the computer , the internal components can be very hot.
Power Mac G4 Cube Optical Drive - 3 6 T ur n the computer upside down, and push do wn on the latch to release it. Allow the latch to extend completely. (Figure 2) Figure 2 7 Gently pull the core from the computer enclosure and place the core on a soft cloth.
Power Mac G4 Cube Optical Drive - 4 Removing the T op Plate Assembly 1. Press the latch in, and tur n o v er the core so the pow er button f aces up. 2. Remov e the f our corner screws that secure the top plate to the f our v er tical posts . 3. Remov e the f our scre ws on the two sides .
Power Mac G4 Cube Optical Drive - 5 4. Lift out the LED cov er that is fitted o v er the power b utton LED . Set the LED co v er aside f or installation on the top plate assembly . (Figure 5) Figure 5 5. Carefully lift up the top plate and disconnect the ke y ed connector (J1 on the logic board).
Power Mac G4 Cube Optical Drive - 6 Removing the Installed Optical Dri ve Note: The procedure is the same whether the optical dr iv e is a CD-R W or a D VD-ROM drive. 1. Grasp the top of the side panel, and slide it up and a wa y to clear the four tabs on the inner side of the panel.
Power Mac G4 Cube Optical Drive - 7 3. Using a magnetized scre wdriver , remov e the two scre ws from the side of the drive . Repeat on the other side.
Power Mac G4 Cube Optical Drive - 8 4. W arning: If the optical drive case is squeezed too tightly, the laser lens could be damaged. When handling the drive case, touch only the outer edges of the case. Holding the drive case by the corner, pull the drive up about half way and disconnect the ATA ribbon cable.
Power Mac G4 Cube Optical Drive - 9 6. Disconnect the board from the drive b y removing the tw o screws . Then pull the board off of the drive . (Figure 11) W arning: If the optical drive case is squeezed too tightly, the laser lens could be damaged. When handling the drive case, touch only the outer edges of the case.
Power Mac G4 Cube Optical Drive - 10 2. Install the connector board on the replacement optical drive , and secure it to the drive with the two scre ws.
Power Mac G4 Cube Optical Drive - 11 5. Install the screws , b ut do not tighten until all f our are in place. Do not overtighten. 6. Close the AirP or t Card door and secure the antenna cable (and AirP or t Card). 7. Star ting with the two bottom tabs, attach the side panel as sho wn.
Power Mac G4 Cube Optical Drive - 12 Replacing the T op Plate Assembly 1. With the top plate assembly in hand, connect the cab le from the top plate to the J1 connector on the logic board. (Figure 17) W arning: To prevent damage to the power board, ensure the keyed connector fits into the J1 connector as shown.
Power Mac G4 Cube Optical Drive - 13 2. Install the LED cov er o v er the power b utton LED on the top plate assemb ly . 3. P osition the top plate assembly ov er the core . Ensure that the four metal tabs align with the f our slots in the top plate, and the D VD-ROM panel tucks in under the lip of the top plate.
Power Mac G4 Cube Optical Drive - 14 Replacing the Computer Cor e in the Enclosure 1. Make sure that the po wer b utton gask et is secured inside the recessed area of the computer enclosure. (Figure 19) Figure 19 Caution: If the power button gasket is not centered correctly in the shell, the computer might not power up.

Position the core so the ports are toward the back of the enclosure. Figure 20 3 With a flat hand, press down on the latch until it loc ks into place .
