- 5 - Before Use Before Use Care of the camera Do not subject the camera to strong vibration, shock, or pressure. • The lens, monito r , or ext ernal body par ts may be damaged b y such treatment . It may also malf unction or the image may not be recorded.

- 9 - Before Use At the time when this camera is purc hased, the monitor faces the camera body . Fold out the monitor as shown below . 1 Fold out the monitor . (Maximum 180 o ) 2 It can be rotated 180 o forwards. 3 Return the monitor to its original position.
Before Use - 10 - Notes • Be careful as the cam era ma y get scratched if yo u rotate the monitor without folding it out com plete ly . • Check that the terminal door is c losed when rotat ing the monitor . The termi nal door may get damaged or the monitor may get scratched if you rot ate it with the term inal door opened.

Preparation - 12 - Preparation Att aching the Lens Cap/ the Shoulder S trap ∫ Att aching the Lens Cap • When the came ra is not being used , always, attach t he lens cap to prot ect the surf ace of the lens. Pass the s tring through the hole on t he camer a.
- 13 - Preparation ∫ Att aching the S houlder Str ap • We recom mend att aching the shoulder str ap when using the camera to prev ent it from dropping. Pass one e nd of the s houlder strap th rough the shoulder s trap eyele t. Pass the s houlder strap th rough the s topper and pull th e shoulder stra p tight.
Preparation - 14 - Att aching the Lens Hood In bright sunlight or backlight, the lens hood will minimize lens flare and ghosting. The lens hood cuts off excess lighting and improves the picture quality and should therefore remain mounted for mos t photographing situations (exemptions: se e below).
- 15 - Preparation Charging the Battery ∫ About batteries that you can use with this camera • Use the dedicate d charger and ba ttery . • The battery is n ot charged when the camera is shipped. Charge the battery before use. • Charge the bat tery indoo rs.
Preparation - 16 - ∫ About the [CHARG E] indi cator The [CHARGE] indicator tu rns on: Charging has started. The [CHARGE] indicator tu rns off: Charging has been completed without any prob lem. (Disconnect the charge r from the electrical socket and detach t he batte ry after charging is completed.
- 17 - Preparation ∫ Recording still pictures (When using the m onitor) Recording conditions by C IP A standard • CIP A is an abbrevia tion of [Camer a & Imag ing Pr oducts Associa tion]. • T emperature: 23 o C (73.4 o F)/Humidi ty: 50%RH when the monit or is on.
Preparation - 18 - ∫ Recor ding moti on pictur es (When usi ng the monitor ) • These times are for an ambient temp erature of 23 o C (73. 4 o F) and a humidi ty of 50% RH.
- 19 - Preparation Inserting and Removin g Card and Battery • Turn the power switc h to [OFF] and confirm that th e lens barrel is retracte d. • Close the fl ash. Set the cam era ON/O FF switc h to OFF , slide th e release slider in the directio n of the arrow , and open the card/batter y door .
Preparation - 20 - About the Intern al Memory/the Card • Y ou can copy the recorded pictures t o a card. ( P154) • Memory size: approx. 70MB • The access time f or the interna l memory may be long er than the ac cess time fo r a card. The following cards which conform to the SD video standard can be used with this camera.
- 21 - Preparation Notes • Do not turn th e camera off, remove i ts battery or car d when the ac cess indicati on is l it (when pictures a re being written, read or d eleted, or the internal memory or the card is being formatted). F urthermore, do not subje ct the camera to vibration, impact or static electri city .
Preparation - 22 - ∫ About the display of the number of recordable pictures and available recording time • Switching bet ween the display of number of recorda ble pictures an d available recor ding time can be perfo rmed in the [REMAI NING DISP .] (P5 5) in th e [SETUP] menu.
- 23 - Preparation Setting Date/Time (Clock Set) • The clock is not set when the camera is shipped. T urn the camera on. • The power lamp 1 light s when y ou turn the camera on. • If the lan guage select screen is not dis played, proceed t o step 4 .
Preparation - 24 - Select [CLOC K SET] in the [REC] or [SET UP] menu, and press 1 . (P48) • The clock can be reset as show n in steps 5 and 6 . • The clock setting is maint ained for 3 months using the built-in back-up battery even without the main battery inserted.

Basic - 26 - ∫ Advanced ∫ Advanced Scene Mode Aperture-Priority Mode (P82) The exposure is determined by the automatically controlled shutter speed, based on the manually set aperture value. - 27 - Basic Tip s for taking good pictures ∫ Direction Detection Function ([ROT A TE DISP .]) Pictures recorded with the camera held vertica lly are played back vertically (rotated).
Basic - 28 - Applicable modes: Program Mode The camera automatically sets the shutt er speed and the aperture value according to the brightness of the subject. Y ou can also change various settings in the [REC] menu. Set the mod e dial to [ ]. • Set the focus selecto r switch to [AF].
- 29 - Basic In Program Mode, you can change the pr eset aperture value and shutter speed combinations without changing the exposure. This is called program shift . Y ou can e.g. reduce the extent of the shar ply rendered s ubject part s by decreasing the aperture value or r ecord a moving subject more dynamically by slowing the shutter speed.
Basic - 30 - Focusing Aim the AF frame at th e subje ct, and then press the sh utter release b utton halfwa y . • The AF fr ame is automatically enla rged during the digital z oom or when it is dark. ∫ About focus range The focus range is displayed when operating the zoom .
- 31 - Basic ∫ When the subject is no t focused as desired (such as when it is not in the center of the composition of the picture you want to take) 1 Aim the AF frame at the subject, and then press the shutter release button halfway to set and lock focus and exposure.
Basic - 32 - Applicable modes: Snapshot Mode The camera will set the most appropriate settings to match the subject and the recording conditions so we recom mend this mode for beginners or those who want to leave the settings to the camera and take pictures easily .

Basic - 34 - When the camera identifies the optimum scene, the i con of the scene concerned is displayed in blue for 2 seconds, after which its color changes to the usual red. Basic - 36 - ∫ About the rec ording f ormat for rec ordin g motion pictu res This camera can record motion pictures in either the A VCHD or MP4 f ormats. A VCHD: Y ou can record high definition quality images with this format. It is suitable for viewing on a large format TV or for saving to disc.

Basic - 42 - Playing Back Motion P ictures This camera wa s designed to play motion pictures using t he A VC HD, MP4 and QuickT ime Motion JPEG formats. ∫ Operations performed during Mo tion Picture Playback The cursor displayed during playback is the same as 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 .
- 43 - Basic Y ou can create a single s till picture from a recorded m otion picture. Press 3 to p ause motion picture playback. Press [MENU/SET] . • Confirmati on screen is dis played. It is exec uted when [YES] is selected. Exit th e menu afte r it is executed.
Basic - 44 - Deleting Pictures Once deleted, pictures cannot be recovered. • The picture being played back is deleted, rega rdless of whet her it is recorded on the internal memory or the card . • Pictures that do not co mply with the DCF st andard or those t hat are prote cted cannot be delete d.
- 45 - Basic Notes • Picture s eries g roups (pict ures with th e picture series icon [ ˜ ]) will be treated as a single picture. Deleting a picture series grou p will delete all pictures in the group. (P132) • Do not turn th e camera off while deleting.
Basic - 46 - Setting the Menu The camera features menus that allow you to choose the settings for t aking pictures and playing them back as you like and menus that enable you to have more fun with the camera and use it more easily . In particular , the [SETUP] menu contains some important settings relating to the camera’s clock and power .

Basic - 48 - • If you set [ MENU RESU ME] (P60) in the [SETUP ] menu to [ON], th e screen s hows the last sel ected menu item w hen th e cam era wa s turn ed off. Example: In t he [REC] menu, change [ AF MODE] from [ Ø ] (1-area-focusing) to [ š ] (Face Detection) ¢ ¢ When the focu s selector switch is set to [AF ] in Progra m Mode.
- 49 - Basic By using the Quick Menu, some of the menu settings can be easily found. • The feature s that can be set using Quick Menu are determined by the mode or a display style the camera is in. Items that cann ot be used are dis played in gray .
Basic - 50 - About the Setup Menu [CLOCK SET], [E CONOM Y] and [AUTO REVIEW] are important it ems. Chec k their settings before using t hem. For details on how to select the [SET UP] menu setti ngs, refer to P48 . • Refer to P23 for details. • Setup/can cel of summer time [ ] can be perfo rmed by pressin g 3 at the time th e area is selected.
- 51 - Basic • The tra vel date is calculat ed using the date in the clo ck sett ing and th e dep arture dat e you set . If you set [WORL D TIME] to the t ravel des tination, t he tra vel date i s calcu lated usi ng the dat e in the cloc k setting and the travel destinati on setting.
Basic - 52 - • When you connect the c amera to a TV , the volume of the TV spea kers d oes not change . • Refer to P100 for details. • Refer to P108 for deta ils abou t the [RE C] mod e menu. • The focus cannot be slightly adju sted with AF locked when recording mot ion pictures in Snaps hot Mode.
- 53 - Basic • The bright ness of the pict ures displ ayed on the mon itor is incre ased so some subjec ts may appear di ffere ntly than in reality on th e monitor . Howeve r , th is does not af fect the re corded pictures. • The moni tor automatically ret urns to normal brigh tness af ter 30 second s when recording in Power LCD Mode.
Basic - 54 - • When the recorded picture and the hi stogram do not match each other under the following condition s, the histogram is displayed in orange.
- 55 - Basic • The MF position will be memorized in t he following cases: – When th e camera is turned of f – When switchin g to a type of focus other than Manual F ocus – When swi tched to Pl ayback Mode • The zoom position wil l be set to the shortest focal length when the [ZOOM RESUME] is set to [OFF].

Basic - 58 - • When the [RES ET] setti ng is selected during record ing, the oper ation th at resets the lens is also performed at th e same time. Y ou will he ar the sound of the lens ope rating but this is normal and not indicati ve of malfunction ing.

Recording - 62 - Recording About the Monitor/the Viewfinder Press [DISPLA Y] to chan ge. • When the menu s creen appear s, the [DI SPLA Y] butto n is not activate d. Dur ing Pl ayback Zoo m, whil e playing back motion pictures and durin g a Slide Show , you can only select E or G .

Recording - 64 - Applicable modes: Using the Zoom Y ou can zoom -in to make people and objects appear closer or zoom-out to record landscapes in wide angle. T o make subj ects appear e ven closer (maximum of 46.9 k ), do not set the resolution to the highest setting f or each aspect ratio ( X / Y / W /) .

Recording - 66 - Notes • The indic ated zoom magnific ation is an approximati on. • The lens barrel extend s or retrac ts accordin g to the zoom po sition. T ake c are not to int erfere with the motion of the lens ba rrel whi le th e zoom l ever is r ota ted.
- 67 - Recording Applicable modes: Using the Built-In Flash A T o open t he flas h Press the flash open button. B T o close the fl ash Press the flash down until it clicks into place. • Be sure to clos e the flas h when not in use. • The flash se tting i s fixed to [ Œ ] while the flash is cl osed.
Recording - 68 - ¢ The flash is fired twice. The subject should not move until the second flash has been fired. The interval between the two flas hes depends on the brightness of the subject. When [RED-EYE REMO V AL ] (P127 ) on the [REC] Mode menu is set to [ON], [ ] appears with the flash icon.

- 71 - Recording Adjust the flash output when the subject is smal l, or the reflectivity is very high or low . Press 3 [ È ] se veral times to display [FLASH], and then 2 / 1 to s et the flash output. • Y ou c an adju st from [ j 2 EV] to [ i 2 EV] in steps of [1/3 EV ].
Recording - 72 - Applicable modes: Close-up Pictures This mode allows you t o take close-up pi ctures, e.g. of flowers. Y ou ca n t ake pictures of a subject as close as 3 / 8 " / 1cm f rom the lens with the shortest focal lengt h setting (1 k magnification; utmost W position).
- 73 - Recording Applicable modes: Manual Focusing Use this function when you want to f ix the focus or when the dist ance between the lens and the subject is known and you do not want to act ivate Auto Focus. Set [SIDE LEVER] in t he [SETUP] menu to [FOCUS].
Recording - 74 - ∫ MF Assist If [MF ASSIST] (P56 ) in the [SETUP] menu is set to [ON], the dis played image is enlarged as soon as focusing is performed. • If you press [ME NU/SET] while MF Ass ist is displaye d, the MF area can be moved us ing 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 .
- 75 - Recording Applicable modes: Using the Self-Timer Notes • When you press t he shu tter release button once f ully , the s ubject is automat ically focused just before record ing.
Recording - 76 - Applicable modes: Exposure Compensati on Use this function to adj ust the exposure to the im port ant part of the subject in case of large diff erences in brightness within the frame. ∫ Operation with the setting wheel 1 Press the setting wheel to call up [ È ].
- 77 - Recording Applicable modes: Using Auto Bracketing In this mode, 3 pictures are automatically recorded with the selected exposure step s each time the shutter r elease button is pressed. With Auto Bracketing d 1EV Notes • When Aut o Bracketing is set, [ ] is display ed on the screen.
Recording - 78 - Applicable modes: Continuous Mode With this mode, pictures are taken as l ong as the shutter release button is pressed. The frame rate/frequency can be selected to match the recording conditions or subjects. Press [ ˜ ]. Press 2 / 1 to sele ct the fram e rate and the n [MENU/SET].
- 79 - Recording Notes • When [ ] or [ ] is set, focus pr ediction will be performed in a poss ible range to priorit ize the frame rate . There fore, if you try to take a pict ure of a subject that is movi ng fast, it may hav e trouble with fo cusing or it may take ti me to focu s.
Recording - 80 - Applicable modes: Setting the Sensitivity This allows the sens itivit y to light (I SO sens itivity) to be set. Higher values allow using faster shutter speeds and/or higher aper ture values or unblurre d hand-held shots. Press 1 [] .
- 81 - Recording ∫ About [ ] (Intelligent ISO sensitivity control) The cam era dete cts mov ement of the subj ect and the n au toma tically s ets the op timum IS O sensitivity and shutter speed to suit the movem ent of the subject and b right ness of the scene to minimize the blurred rendition of t he subject.
Recording - 82 - Applicable modes: Aperture- and Shutter-Pr iority Modes Set the apertur e value to a higher number when you want a larger in-focus area (in front of and behind the m ai n subjec t) , to a lower number for a sm aller in-focus area. Set the mod e dial to [ ].
- 83 - Recording Applicable modes: Manual Exposure Mode Determine the exposu re by manually setting the aperture value and the shutter speed. The Manual Exposure Assistance appears on the lower portion of t he screen to indicate the exposure. Set the mod e dial to [ ].
Recording - 84 - Applicable modes: T aking Pictures with d ifferent image effects (Creative Control Mode) While checking the sub j ect on the screen, you can set desired effects and continue taking pictures. Set the mod e dial to [ ]. Press 3 / 4 to sele ct an item, a nd then [MENU/ SET].
- 85 - Recording The blurred areas above and below or to the left and right of the set range will make the picture look like the subject was a miniature. 1 Select [MINIA TURE EFFECT ] using St ep 2 on P8 4 and t hen [MENU/SET ]. 2 Press 4 to display the setting screen.
Recording - 86 - Applicable modes: T aking Expressive P ortrait s and Landscape Pictures (A dvanced Scene Mode) Y ou can take high-quality pictures of such subjects as people, scenery , sporting events and activities, people in night scenes and fl owers in accordance with the surrounding conditions.
- 87 - Recording This allows you t o take pictures of a wide landscape. Set here when you want to take pictures of sports scenes or other fast -moving events. Notes • This mode is suitable f or taking pictures of subject s at dis tances of appro x. 16' 4" / 5 m or more.
Recording - 88 - This allows you to t ake pictures of a person and the background with near real-life brightness. ∫ Han dheld Ni ght Sho t With this mode, a high-frame rate series of pictures is automatically taken and combined to make a single picture.
- 89 - Recording Applicable modes: Using the Scene Mode s When you select a Scene Mode to m atc h the su bject and recording situation, the camera sets the optimal exposure and hue to obtain the desired picture. Set the mod e dial to [ ]. Press 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 to select the Scene Mode and then [MENU/SET].
Recording - 90 - Y ou can take pictures with framing suitable for creating panorama images. ∫ Set ting the re cording di rection 1 Press 3 / 4 to select the reco rding direction and then [M ENU/SET]. • The horiz ontal/v ertical gui delines will b e displaye d.
- 91 - Recording This mode allows you to take pictures with a candle-lit at mosphere. ∫ T echnique for Cand le Light Mode • It will be most effective when t aking pictures withou t using the flash. Notes • We reco mmend using a tripod and the self-t imer .
Recording - 92 - Select this mode when you want to t ake pictures of a pet such as a dog or a cat. Y ou can set your pet’s birthday and name. For information about [AGE] or [NAME], refer to [BABY1]/[BABY 2] on P9 1 . Select this mode when you want to take pictur es of sunset view .
- 93 - Recording When follow a subject moving in one di rection such as a runner or car by turning the camera, the background becomes a blur and the subject stays focused. This ef fect is called “panning”. This mode allows you to obtain this effect easier .
