Prepar ation 12 Quic k Guide This is the overview of the procedure to record pictures with this camera. For each operation, be sure to refer to the corresponding pages. 1 Charge the battery . (P13) • When the camera is shipped, the battery is no t charged.
Preparation 13 Charging the Battery with the Char g er When the camera is shipped, the batter y is not charged. Charge the batter y before use. 1 Attach the battery with attention to the direction of the battery . 2 Connect t he A C mains lead . • The AC mains lead does not f it entirely into the AC input terminal.
Prepar ation 14 About the Battery Battery indication The remaining batter y power appears on the screen. [It does not appear when you use the camera along with the AC adaptor ( ACA-DC4-U/J/E ; optional).] The indication tur ns red and blinks: Recharge or replace the batter y .

Prepar ation 20 • Aspect ratio is the ratio of the width and the height of the picture. F or aspect ratio settings, see page 87. • If y ou select a larg er picture size , you can pr int pictures clearly . When you select a smaller picture size , you can store more pictures on a card though the pi ct ure quality is deteriorated.
Preparation 21 Attaching the Lens Cap/Strap ■ Lens Cap 1 P ass the string through the hole on the lens cap. 2 P ass the string through the hole on the camera. 3 Attach the lens cap. ■ Strap 1 Pass the strap thro ugh the hole at the Strap Eyelet. • Check that the strap is f ir mly attached to the camera.
Prepar ation 22 Setting Date/Time (Cloc k Set) ■ Initial setting The clock is not set when the camera is shipped. When you turn the camera on, the follo win g screen appears. • T ake the lens cap off before setting the date and time. • Press the [MENU] button, the screen shown in step 1 appears.
Preparation 23 Setup Menu Change the settings if necessar y . (See pages 24 to 26 for details about the settings.) 1 Remove the lens cap and turn the camera on. • The menu items depend on the mode selected with the mode dial (P30). In this page, the items in Programme AE mode [ L ] are indicated.

Preparation 27 About the LCD Monitor ■ Selecting the screen to be used A LCD monitor (LCD) Press the [DISPLA Y/PWR LCD] button to switch to the screen to be used. • When the menu screen appears, the [DISPLA Y] button is not activated. During multi pla yb ack (P50) or pla yback zoom (P51), the indications on the screen can be turned o n and off.
Prepar ation 28 ■ T o view the LCD monitor outdoors on a bright sunny day (P ower LCD function) When you press and hold the [DISPLA Y/ PWR LCD] button f or 1 second, the power LCD function is activated, the LCD monitor becomes brighter t han usual and easier to see outdoors.
Preparation 29 ■ Histogram • A histogram is a gr aph that displays brightness along the hor izontal axis (blac k to white) and the number of pix els at each brightness level on the v er tical axis. • It allows the camera user to easily chec k the wa y a p icture is being exposed.

Select the desired mode and enjoy the v ar iety of recording. Rotate the mode dial slowly and securely . L : Programme AE mode (P31) The exposure is automa tically adjusted by the camera.
Recording pi ctures (basic) 31 ■ Programme AE The camera automatically sets the shutter speed and the aper ture value according to the brightness of the subject. 1 1 Remove the lens cap. 2 T urn the camera on. 3 Set the mode dial to pro gramme AE mode [ L ].
Recording pic tures (basi c) 32 ■ Correct posture for taking good pictures T o take pictures without blurring: • Hold the camera gently with both hands, keep arms stationar y at your side and stand with your f eet slightly apar t . • Be careful not to mov e the camera when you press the shutter button.
Recording pi ctures (basic) 33 ■ Jitter (camera shake) • Be careful of jittering when pressing the shutter button. • The jitter aler t 1 appears when the shutter speed is slow and the chances of blurring are greater .

Recording pic tures (basi c) 36 ■ The Backlight Compensation Backlight is a situation where light comes from behind the subject. Subjects such as people become dar k when pictures are recorded in the backlight. If y ou press e , [ 0 ] (compensating backlight ON indication) appears and the backlight compensation function is activated.

Recording pic tures (basi c) 38 Using the Optical Zoom Y ou can make people and subjects appear closer with the 4 times optical zoom, and landscapes can be recorded in wide angle. ■ T o make subjects appear further away use (Wide) ■ T o make subjects appear closer use (T ele) ■ T o further increase the zoom • Use the extra optical z o om.
Recording pi ctures (basic) 39 • The optical zoom is set to Wide (1×) when the camera is turned on. • If you use the z oom function after focusing on the subject, f ocus on the subject again. • The lens barrel (P10) is ejected or retracted according to the zoom position.

Recording pi ctures (basic) 45 Compensating the Exposure Use this function when you cannot achie ve appropriate exposure due to the diff eren ce of brightness between the sub ject and the background. 1 Press e several times until [ C EXPOSURE] appe ars and th en compensate the exposure.
Recording pic tures (basi c) 46 T aking Pictures using A uto Bracket In this mode, 3 pictures are automatically recorded by each press of the shutter button according to the compensation range of the e xposure. Y ou can select the desired e xposure among the 3 types of pictures.

Recording pic tures (basi c) 48 T aking Pictures using Burst Mode 1 Press the Single/Burst Mode Button to switch the bur st mode setting and then take pictures. • Hold down the shutter button fully to activate the b urst mode. ■ Number of pictures recorded in burst mode *The transf er speed of the card has no effect on the b urst sp eed.

Playbac k (basic) 52 Deleting Pictures ■ T o delete a single picture 1 Select the pictu re to be deleted. • w : Play bac k the previous picture. • q : Play bac k the next picture. 2 Delete the picture. • While deleting the picture, [ A ] appears on the screen.
Playback (basic) 53 3 Delete the pictures. • It is possible to delete up to 50 pictures all at once. ■ T o delete all pictures 1 Select [ALL DELETE]. 2 Delete all of the pictures. • Once deleted, pictures cannot be recov ered. Please dou ble-chec k b efore deleting pictures.

(P87) Y ou cannot shoo t motion pictures in the [ ] aspect ratio.
Recording pictures (advanced) 60 A vailable recording time (seconds) • The recordable time is an approximation. (Actual times depend on recording conditions and the type of SD card.) • Recording time depends on the subject. • The remaining recordable time shown on the LCD may not reduce regularly .

Recording picture s (advan ced) 62 This mode allows you to mak e the subject stand out from an unfocused bac kground and adjust the exposure and the hue to achiev e a healthy complexion on the subject. ■ T echnique for P ortrait mode T o make this mode more effectiv e: 1 Rotate the zoom le ver to T ele as far as possible .
Recording p ictures (adv anced) 63 Use this mode to take pictures of f ood in restaurants, irrespectiv e of t he lighting, so that the natural colours of the subject come out. • The ISO sensitivit y is automatically adjusted to the optimal value . This mode allows you to take a picture of a wide landscape.
Recording picture s (advan ced) 64 This mode allows y ou to take pictures against a night landsc ape. The subject can be recorded with brightness in real life by using the flash and the slow shutter speed. ■ T echnique for Night portrait mo de • Open the flash.
Recording p ictures (adv anced) 65 This mode adjusts the exposure and tone to bring out the healthy colour of your baby’ s skin. The flash will be weaker than normal if you choose to use it. • Y ou can also enter your baby’ s age so that it appears when you are showing the picture later .
Recording picture s (advan ced) 66 This mode helps you take pictures that make the skin of y our subject appear smoother . Use this mode when ta king por traits from the chest up . ■ T echnique for Soft skin mode T o make this mode more effectiv e: 1 Rotate the zoom le ver to T ele as far as possible .
Recording p ictures (adv anced) 67 Select this mode when you want to take pictures at wedding receptions, indoor par ties, etc. Both the people and the background can be recorded with brightness in real life by using the flash and slowing down the shutter speed.
Recording picture s (advan ced) 68 This mode allows y ou to take a picture in locations such as skiing resor ts and locations near snowy mountains. The exposure and the white balance are adjusted to make the white colour of the snow stand out. • The ISO sensiti vit y is automatically adjusted to the optimal value .
Recording p ictures (adv anced) 69 This mode allows you to tak e a picture of yourself . ■ T echnique f or Self-portrait mode • When you are f ocused by pressing the shutter button halfwa y , the self-timer indicator lights up . F ix the camera f ir mly and then press the shutter button fully .
Recording picture s (advan ced) 70 Using the [REC] mode menu Setting the hue, picture quality adjustment, etc. allows y ou to create wide variations on taking pictures. • Set the mode dial to the desired recording mode. • The menu items depend on the selected recording mode.
Recording p ictures (adv anced) 71 F or setting, see page 70. This function allows you to reproduce a white colour closer to the tone in real life o n the pictures recorded under sunlight, halogen lighting, etc. in which the white colour may appear reddish or b luish .
Recording picture s (advan ced) 72 ■ Setting the White Balance m anually (White set p ) Use this mode when you want to set the white balance manually . 1 Set to [ p ] (White Set) and then press q . 2 Select [ : ] (White set 1) or [ ; ] (White set 2) and then press q .
Recording p ictures (adv anced) 73 F or setting, see page 70. ISO sensitivity represents the sensitivity to light in values . If you set the ISO sensitivity higher , the camera becomes more suitable fo r recording in dark places.
Recording pictures (advanced) 74 For setting, see page 70. Y ou can select 4 types of quality (compression rate) according to the usage of the picture. • When the quality is set to [T IFF] or [RA W], a JPEG picture with the quality equal to the Standard [ H ] is created at the same time.

Y ou can take a picture with audio . • When you set [A UDIO REC.] to [ON], [ I ] appears on the screen. • When you start recording by focusing on the subject and pressing the shutter button, the audio recording will be automatically stopped in 5 seconds.
Recording picture s (advan ced) 76 For setting, see page 70. ■ High speed AF (H) mod e • When you select 3-area-f o cusing (high speed) or 1-area-focusing (high speed), the auto focus is activ ated in high speed and you can f ocus on the subject more quickly .

When the AF mode is set to 1-area- focusing, 1-area-f ocusing (high speed) or spot-focusing, the time required f or focusing when pressing the shutter button halfwa y will be re duced.
Recording picture s (advan ced) 7 8 For setting, see page 70. It is possible to further magnify a subject already magnified 4 times with the optical zoom 4 more times with the digital zoom, thereby reaching a maximu m of 16 times. (Y ou can still use the extra optical zoom.

Recording picture s (advan ced) 84 ■ MF assistance Mov e the jo ystick e / r while [MF ASSIST] is set to [MF1] or [MF2] to enlarge the picture to help focusing. (P24) • [MF1]: The centre area of the picture is enlarged. Y ou can focus while considering the overall composition of the picture.
Recording p ictures (adv anced) 85 AF/AE Loc k (AF: A uto fo cus/AE: A uto e xposure) Locking the f ocus is use ful when the subject is outside of the AF area of the shot you w ant to take. Loc king the exposure is useful if there is extreme contrast in the shot and you cannot get the best e xposure.
Recording picture s (advan ced) 86 AF Macr o mode This mode allows y ou to take close-up pictures of the subject, e.g. When taking pictures of flowers . Y ou can take pictures approaching the subject at a distance up to 5 cm from the lens by rotating the z oom lev er upmost to Wide (1×).
Recording p ictures (adv anced) 87 Setting the aspect ratio Aspect ratio is the ratio of the width and the height of the picture. This camera gives y ou three aspect ratios to choose from. • j • • h • Y ou cannot shoot motion pictures in the [ ] aspect ratio.
Recording picture s (advan ced) 88 Shooting with the extra optical zoom The camera’ s optical zoom can normally give y ou a tele photo zoom of 4 times, b ut by choosing a resolution that has an EZ suffix, f or example 5.5M , the e xtra optical zoom starts f unctioning and zoom extends as f ollows.

Playback (advanced) 90 Using the [PLA Y] mode menu The play mode menu off ers you various wa ys to play and edit your pictures. • When rotating the zoom lev er toward T , the page of the menu screen can be forw arded. (vice versa) • After selecting the item, change the settings as described on the follo wing pages.

Pla yback ( advanced ) 93 • Y ou can place up to 999 pictures in your fa vorites list. • Once deleted, pictures cannot be recov ered. Please double-chec k before deleting pictures. • Do not turn off the camera while deleting. • Pictures that are protected (P97) or that do not conform to DCF standards (P49) will not be deleted.
Playback (advanced) 94 For men u operations, see page 90. Y ou can rotate and display the recorded pictures in increments of 90°. ■ Example When rotating clockwise ( a ) 1 Select the pictu re to be rot ated and set it. • Y ou cannot rotate motion pictures, flip animations, or protected images.
Pla yback ( advanced ) 95 F or menu operations, see page 90. DPOF (Digital Print Order Format) is a system that allows the user to select which pictures are to be printed on compatible photo printers. DPOF also allows the user to set how many copies of each picture will be printed.
