Chapter 1 Safeguards and Installing the Page Printer 1-2 CA UTION LABELS Caution labels have been attached to the printer at the following locations for safety purposes. BE SUFFICIENTLY CAREFUL to avoid fire or electric shock when removing a paper jam or when replacing toner.

Such locations may cause the printer to fall down or fall over. This type of situation presents a danger of personal injury or damage to the printer.

After the toner container is installed, set the two toner container releas e levers to the left pos ition (fixed).

The paper feed cass ette attached to the paper feeder loc ated at the bottom of the printer can be us ed to supply standar d paper from A5 siz e up to ledger size by adjusting its paper guide and paper stopper position.

Place these on the front of the c assette acc ording to the paper size ins ide to make it easy to k now the current paper size.

Open the face-up output tray (when the tray is being used). Use the face-up output tr ay when you wish paper to be stack ed with the printed side facing up (rever se order).
Setup and Connections 1- 25 9. Connect the printer to the computer . A standard Centronic s parallel interfac e connector ( ) and RS-232C/RS-422A s erial interface connector ( IOIOI ) ar e located on the rear s ide of the printer. For pin connec tions, please r efer to Appendix C .

Expanding Memory 1- 41 Expanding Memory The printer com es standar d equipped with 16 MB of main m em ory. However, more c om plex pages can be printed and proc essing speed inc reased by expanding the printer ’s m em ory. There are two slots available in the printer f or expanding m em ory.

Expanding Memory 1- 43 Inst alling SIMMs Insert the SIMM or SIMMs into the dedicated sock ets on the pr inter's m ain board. WARNING Take precautions that no foreign substances such as metal chips or liquid get inside the printer during the installation process.

Expanding Memory 1- 45 3. Remove the SIMM or SIMMs fr om the pac k age. À Insert the connec tor end of the SIMM into the s ock et. Á Carefully push the board upright until it snaps into place. Mak e sure that the catc hes at the ends of the s ock et fit into the holes at the ends of the SIMM board.

After the SIMMs have been installed, reattach the r ear cover on the pr inter and tighten all six screws se curel y .

Chapter 2 Operating the Page Printer 2-2 Control Panel The printer contr ol panel consists of indicators, a mes sage display , and various k eys. Nearly all of the printer modes set using k eys on the c ontrol panel are automatically recorded within the printer, and are not los t even if power is tur ned off.
Control Panel 2-3 Message Di splay The m ess age display display s the printer's oper ational m ode. Mess ages which are displayed and their m eaning are given in the table below. Message Meaning Self test The printer is self-testing and warming up after power-up and is not ready to print.

Control Panel 2-5 Paper Siz e Indicator The paper s ize indicator indicates the paper s ize of the cassette c urrently installed in the printer (fac tory setting is A3) or the paper size currently set for the m ulti-pur pose tray. During printing the paper size specified by the com puter in data being sent to the printer will be display ed.

Chapter 2 Operating the Page Printer 2-8 About the LED Indicator for the Paper Feed Cassettes The size indic ator plate on the front of the paper feed cas settes is illuminated by LED. This LED indicates the status of the cass ettes as follows depending on whether it is on, off or flas hing.

(See page 2-16.) CANCEL key (1) This key can be used to cancel mode selection during mode selection or cancel printing during printing.

Operating Procedures 2-11 Operating Procedures This s ection explains basic operations of the printer and procedures leading up to and including printing. Operating Pr ecautions · Do not turn off power during printing. T his m ay result in a paper jam or dam age to the printer.

Operating Procedures 2-15 Feed Selection Use the FEED k ey to select whether to feed paper f rom one of the paper f eed cass ettes or f rom the multi- purpose tray. If optional paper f eeders ( ST-1000 or EF-100) are ins talled, any of these can also be selected.

Operating Procedures 2-21 1 — Software version This inf orm ation shows the s oftware version and date of issue of the printer. 2 — Hardware information This inf orm ation shows the cur rently selected paper feed s ource (indicated by an asterisk ), paper s ize, paper type, and main settings of the printer.

Chapter 2 Operating the Page Printer 2-32 RA M DISK A RAM DISK can be set up as a vir tual m edia device by setting a given amount of the total pr inter mem or y as the RAM DISK. This can then be used f or reading and writing data jus t as with a mem ory card or as a virtual m ail box func tion (see page 2-34) .

Virtual Mail Box (VMB) 2-35 Outputting to a VMB W hen sending data to a virtual output tray set within the RAM DISK, mak e this setting f rom the printer driver. W ith this setting, data c an be sent by specifying the desired virtual output tray number.
