6 Intr oduction Thank you for purchasing the Kor g MR-1 1-bit mobile recorder . In order to take full advantage of your new equipment, please read this manual car efully and use the product as directed. When you've read the manual, keep it safe for futur e reference.

8 9. Power b utton (with Hold function) This turns the power on/off (shutdown). By sliding this button to the HOLD position, you can prevent accidental operation fr om occurring when you inadvertently touch the buttons or the P-dial.
9 Screens and operations Level meter screen and men u list (MENU) screen When you power-on the MR-1, the display will show the level meter scr een. When the display shows the level meter screen, pr essing the menu button will show the menu list (MENU) screen which lets you pr oceed to various types of settings or informational screen.
10 Basic operation 1. P ower and usage The MR-1 contains a rechar geable battery that is convenient for mobile or outdoor use. If you're in a location where AC power is available, you can also use the MR-1 with the included AC adaptor . If the AC adaptor is connected, rechar ging will begin regardless of whether the power is on or off.
11 Remaining battery indication The battery icon in the level meter screen indicates the appr oximate remaining battery ca- pacity , and whether the battery is being recharged.
12 2. Connecting y our monitor equipment Connect stereo headphones to the headphone jack. Use the volume buttons to adjust the vol- ume. If you're connecting the MR-1 to a monitor system, connect your ster eo cable (mini) to the OUTPUT . Connecting headphones won't cut the sound from the output jacks.
13 4. Playing bac k the demo project The MR-1 contains a high-quality demo project that was r ecorded in DFF(DSDIFF) format. Here's how to play back this pr oject. What is a project? When you recor d on the MR-1, two files are created; an audio file and a pr oject file (contain- ing protection data and markers, etc.
14 5. The level meter screen When you turn on the power , the level meter screen is shown in the display . When the menu list (MENU) screen is shown, you can also access the level meter scr een by pressing the menu button. This screen shows information such as the MR-1's operating status and r ecording/playback format.
15 6. Recording When you recor d on the MR-1, date and time information is automatically added to the file so that you can manage your projects mor e easily .
16 Recording using the line inputs Set the input switch to LINE. If the level is too low even after you've adjusted the gain ( → p.16), set the input switch to MIC. Selecting the recor ding format Here's how to select the r ecording format.
17 2. Press the menu button, and in the menu list, use the P-dial to select and confirm "REC LEVEL." The recor ding level (REC LEVEL) setting screen will appear . 3. Make sure that the screen indicates Input Gain: (Manual). If this is not shown, turn the P-dial to select the appropriate scr een.
18 7. Other playbac k/record operations Selecting and playing bac k a project/file Y ou can use the rewind and fast-forwar d buttons or the P-dial to select the project/file that you want to play .
19 Play/P ause Button or Push 4. Press the play button to begin pla ying the selected project/file. Alternatively , you can begin playback by using the P-dial to select and confirm "Play Now" in the file edit screen.
20 6. When you've finished making settings, press the menu button to return to the recor d- ing level (REC LEVEL) setting screen. Alternatively , you can return by using the P-dial to select and confirm "<- Back" in the screen.
21 Using marks within a pr oject If you've made an extended recor ding, such as of a live performance or a practice session, you can move between songs or to a desired location by moving while you listen to the sound or by fast-forwarding or r ewinding according to the counter time.
22 Regardless of the screen sho wn in the display , y ou can press the re wind or fast-for - ward b utton during pla yback to mo ve to the time location of the pre vious or next mark.
23 When you've finished making settings, press the P-dial several times to r eturn to the Mark Edit screen. Deleting a mark (Delete Mark) 1. When you use the P-dial to select and confirm "Delete Mark," a dialog screen will ask y ou to confirm the deletion.
24 8. Other general operations Changing the meter peak hold and the counter mode 1. From the level meter screen, press the P-dial. The meter/counter (Meter/Counter) screen will appear . 2. Use the P-dial to select and confirm "Meter Peak Hold" (peak indicator hold time).
25 2. Use the P-dial to select and confirm the project/file whose name you want to edit. (See "Selecting and playing bac k a project/file," p.18) If you want to edit the name of the currently selected pr oject/file, simply press the P-dial twice to confirm.
26 Conserving battery power If you're using with the MR-1 operating on battery power , you can reduce power consumption by turning off unneeded cir cuitry .
27 A uto shutdown setting If no operations have been performed for the length of time you specify here, the shutdown screen will appear automatically , and the power will turn off several seconds after that. This will prevent the battery fr om running down in the event you forget to turn of f the power .
28 Setting the date and time If you set the MR-1's date and time, the recor ded files will have the correct date and time stamp. Here's how to set the internal clock. 1. Press the menu button, and in the menu list (MENU) screen, use the P-dial to select and confirm "SYSTEM.
29 Protecting a pr oject Here's how to pr otect a project. If you edit the name or delete or edit the mark settings of a project that is pr otected, these settings will revert to their original state when you select an- other project or turn of f the power .
30 4 . Use the P-dial to select and confirm "Delete." A dialog screen will ask you to confirm the Delete operation. Push Push 5 . Use the P-dial to select and confirm [Y es]. If you decide not to delete, use the P-dial to select and confirm [No] (or press the menu button), and you'll return to the file edit scr een.
31 Other functions Pla y mode The MR-1 provides thr ee play modes, as well as shuffle and repeat play settings. T o select these mode, use "PLA Y MODE" in the menu list (MENU) scr een. Current Proj/File (pla y only one project/file) In this mode, only the single project/file you select will play .

33 Pla y list (PLA Y LIST) Creating a play list After creating a play list, you can select "Play List" as the play mode, and the pr ojects/files will be played in the order specified by the list. The repeat and shuf fle settings of the Play Mode can affect the playback of the PlayList.
34 Viewing a pla y list Here's how to view the contents of a play list. Press the menu button, and in the menu list (MENU) scr een, use the P-dial to select and con- firm "PLA Y LIST .
35 4. The Move icon will appear in the pla y list (PLA Y LIST) screen. 5 . T urn the P-dial to move the project/file to the desired position, and then press the dial to confirm. The play list (PLA Y LIST) scr een will show the new order . If you press the menu button before you confirm, you will return to the play list edit screen.
36 Remove All Here's how to r emove all projects/files from the play list. This will not delete the projects/files themselves. 1. In the play list (PLA Y LIST) screen, use the P-dial to select and confirm any project/ file. 2. The play list edit screen will appear .
37 DFF (DSDIFF) This is a 1-bit audio file format widely used in professional audio devices for SACD (Super Audio CD) production. The name stands for Direct Str eam Digital Interchange File Format (file extension .dff). DSF This is a 1-bit audio file format used in some "V AIO" personal computers made by Sony .
38 System settings (SYSTEM) Here you can make various system settings for the MR-1 itself. Press the menu button to access the menu list (MENU) scr een.
39 Formatting the hard disk (Format) Here's how to format the MR-1's har d disk. Y ou should only perform this operation if you want to erase all of the data saved on the har d disk, or if the message "Drive Error ." appears frequently .
40 Updating the system (Load System) Y ou can download the latest version of the MR-1 operating system file from the Kor g website (www .korg.com). 41 DSD output filter settings (DSD Filter) When playing back a 1-bit project/file, you can select one of thr ee types of signal processing filter that will be used. By default, the standard T ype 1 filter is used. T ype 1 : -3.0 dB @ 50 kHz (standard), -18.
42 Using the MR-1 with y our computer Y ou can use the MR-1 as a USB 2.0 mass storage class device. This lets you copy files from the MR-1 to your computer , or copy files (W A V , DSDIFF , etc.) from your computer into the MR-1. 43 4. Save data on your computer . When you open the "Local disk (*:)" (or "Unspecified name") that appeared on your computer in step 3, the contents of the MR-1's hard disk will be displayed. Copy the desired data onto your computer .

49 Nothing happens when y ou press a button • In some cases, the buttons may be less responsive while the r ecording is operating, such as during playback or recor ding.
50 Disk too busy . • Repeated actions of recor ding, writing, and deleting will gradually decrease the amount of contiguous free space on the har d disk, causing files to be saved in a fragmented state during recor ding. This message will appear when access to the drive has slowed down due to such problems.
