1 Listening precautions • Do not play your Headphones at a high volume. • Hearing experts advise agai nst continuous extended play. • If you experience a ringing in your ears, reduce volume or discontinue use. • Do not use while operating a motorized veh icle.
2 CAUTIONS Carrying dry cell batteries ar ound When putting dry cell batteries in a pocket or bag, ensure that no other metal objects such as a necklace are placed together with them. Contact with any metal may cause short-ci rcuiting which may cause a fire.

5 INSTALLING BATTERY Remove the battery compartment cover and insert one LR03 ( AAA) alkaline battery (not supplied) matchi ng the po larities (+ and -) indicated on the rear side of the player, then replace the co mpartment cover. Battery indicator The battery indicator shows the remaining battery level.
6 GETTING STARTE D INSTALLING USB DRIVER (FOR WINDOWS 98SE ONLY) Follow these instructions to load software that enables a computer to recognize the Digital Audio Player. 1. Insert the CD-ROM into the CD- ROM drive of your PC. 2. Turn off the Digital Audio Player and connect it to you r PC with the USB connector.
7 GETTING STARTED CONNECTING TO PC You can transfer MP3 and WMA format music files from the PC to your Digital Audio Player through USB po rt. USB2.0 (480Mbps speed is not supported.) Connecting Digital Audio Player to PC 1. Open the rubber cap of the USB connector.
8 GETTING STARTE D • When you transfer a WMA-DRM file fr om the PC, use Windows Media© Player 9 or later. If you transfer it by drag and drop, it cannot be played with the player. Disconnectin g from PC For Windows 2000/Me/XP users: Left-click the icon in the task bar, and fo llow the on-screen instr uctions.

10 GETTING STARTE D TURNING POWER ON/OFF To turn power ON Press and hold 6 button till "welcome" appears. After a while, the following screen appears. To turn power OF F Press and hold 7 (Stop) button. • When the player is turned on, it resumes the mode it was in when it was last turned off.
11 GETTING STARTED DISPLAY OVERVIEW ∗ If the file information is long and disp layed over two lin es, it scrolls. During scrolling, the file name m ay not be correctly displayed.
12 USING THE MAIN MENU There are number of modes you can operate using MAIN MEN U. Types of modes BASIC OPERATIONS MUSIC mode Select to play music. (See page 13.) VOICE mode Select to record and play messages and recorded FM broadcast. (See pages 14, 15 and 18.
13 BASIC OPERATIONS PLAYING MUSIC You can play the music files. Before playing music, adjust the volume level with the volume +/- buttons. To play mus ic 1. After turning on the player, press MENU button and ¢ / 4 button to select MUSIC mode from Main Menu, and then press 6 button to enter that mode.
14 BASIC OPERATIONS RECORDING VOICE MESSAGES You can store your voice as voice file s by talking into built-in microphone . To record voice messa ges 1. After turning on the player, press MENU button and ¢ / 4 button to select VOICE mode from Main Menu, and then press 6 button to enter that mode.
15 BASIC OPERATIONS PLAYING MESSAGES You can play the recorded messages (voice files and recorded FM broadcasts). To play mes sages 1. After turning on the player, press MENU button and ¢ / 4 button to select VOICE mode from Main Menu, and then pre ss 6 button to enter that mode.
16 BASIC OPERATIONS LISTENING TO FM BROADCASTS You can listen to a preset (registered) FM st ation after presetting FM stations. The following two operation modes are available: Scan mode: Used to tune in to a station. A.Scan, M.Scan and S.Scan modes are available for tuning and then presetting.
17 BASIC OPERATIONS 1. After turning on the player, press MENU button and ¢ / 4 button to select FM mode from Main Menu, and then press 6 button to enter that mode. ("Radio" appears.) 2. Press 7 button to enter scan mode. ("Scan" appears.
18 BASIC OPERATIONS RECORDING FM BROADCASTS To record F M broadcasts 1. After turning on the player, tune to t he desired FM station for recording, referring to "LISTENING TO FM RADIO BROADCASTS" on page 16. 2. Press and hold REC button until "Recording" appears.
19 BASIC OPERATIONS DELETING FILES To delete files 1. After turning on the player, press MENU button and ¢ / 4 button to select DELETE mode from Main Menu, and then press 6 button to enter that mode. 2. Press ¢ / 4 button to select types of files you want to de lete from the DELETE menu.
20 SET MENU ITEMS In SET mode, you can set the following SET MENU items: EQ SET (Equalization Set), PLAYMODE, SLEEP TIMER, A.POWER OFF (Auto Power OFF), BACKLI GHT, CONTRAST, MENU LANG (Menu Language) and FONTS To set each item, see the relevan t later page .
21 ADVANCED FEATURES EQUALIZER You can select from one of 6 different preset sound modes or one customized sound mode. Types of soun d modes NORMAL No sound effect applies. CLASSICAL Good for classical music JAZZ Good for jazz music ROCK Boosts low and high frequency.
22 ADVANCED FEATURES To select sound mod e 1. After turning on the player, press MENU button and ¢ / 4 button to select SET mode from Main Menu, and then press 6 button to enter that mode. 2. Press ¢ / 4 button to select “EQ SET”. 3. Press 6 button.
23 ADVANCED FEATURES PLAYMODE You can select various play modes. Ho wever, for voice file playback, only NORMAL, REPEAT ONE and REPEAT ALL are selectable. Types of p layback mode s To select play mode 1. After turning on the player, press MENU button and ¢ / 4 button to select SET mode from Main Menu , and then press 6 button to enter that mode.
24 ADVANCED FEATURES SLEEP TIMER Use the sleep timer to turn off the pl ayer after a cert ain period of time during playback. You can set the per iod of time to 15, 30, 45, 60 minut es, or OFF (default). The sleep timer works temporarily. Once it has worked, it is canceled.
25 ADVANCED FEATURES AUTO POWER OFF Use the auto power off to turn off the player after a certain period of time when no operation is made. You can set the period of time to 2 , 5, or 10 minutes, or OFF (default).
26 ADVANCED FEATURES BACKLIGHT Use to adjust the backlighting extension time (0 to Max) after finishing the last operation. (Default: 5 seconds) When "Max" is set, the backlig hting remains on for approx.
27 ADVANCED FEATURES CONTRAST Use to adjust the contrast of the display. To set contrast 1. After turning on the player, press MENU button and ¢ / 4 button to select SET mode from Main Menu , and then press 6 button to enter that mode. 2. Press ¢ / 4 button to select “CONTRAST”.
28 ADVANCED FEATURES MENU LANGUAGES Use to set the language for the menu. You can select English (default), simplified Chinese o r traditional Chinese. To set menu language 1. After turning on the player, press MENU button and ¢ / 4 button to select SET mode from Main Menu, and then press 6 button to enter that mode.
29 ADVANCED FEATURES FONTS Use to set the language for the file name and ID3 tags. You can select one of 27 languages (default: English). To set fonts 1. After turning on the player, press MENU button and ¢ / 4 button to select SET mode from Main Menu , and then press 6 button to enter that mode.
30 ADVANCED FEATURES ABOUT Use to display firmware version and status of the player. To display: After turning on the player, press MENU button and ¢ / 4 button to select ABOUT mode from Main Menu, and then press 6 button to enter that mode. To exit ABOUT mode: Press MENU button.
31 ADVANCED FEATURES RESETTING THE UNIT Use to reset all the settings you have made to d efault. To reset the unit 1. After turning on the player, press MENU button and ¢ / 4 button to select RESET mode from Main Menu, and then p ress 6 button to enter that mode.
32 ADVANCED FEATURES NAVIGATE Use to display the hierarchical tree structur e of music folders and files ( ). From this tree structure, you can ea sily locate a desired music file and play it back.
33 ADVANCED FEATURES Music file playing orde r in Music mode: From the hierarchical tree structur e, you can easily unde rstand the playing order of music files when you normally play them in Music mode. You will see that the music files are played b ack in the order from the higher hierarchy to the lower one.
34 ADVANCED FEATURES LOCKING BUTTONS (HOLD) Slide the HOLD switch to the right to lock all controls. When the hold function is activated, the appears in the upper right of the display.
35 TROUBLESHOOTING Problem Solution The player does n ot function. • Make sure the HOLD switch is off. • This player provides versatile operations under microcomputer control. If the player cannot be properly operated by pressing any button, remove the battery and insert it again after a while.
