E-6 INT R ODUC TION This unit records in HD V or DV form at. DV format is a st andard for recording SD (S tandard-De finition) video onto DV cas settes or mini DV cas- settes. HDV format is a standard for record ing HD (High-Definition) video onto DV cass ettes or mini DV cas - settes.

E-8 INT R ODUC TION This unit uses consumables or co mponents that will wear off. If a worn-out or deteriorated com ponent continues to be used, it may cause the unit to br eak down. T o prevent this, perform routine mainte- nance using the head-cleaning tape.
E-9 Use a JVC cleaning tape. Follow the instructions below for using the clean- ing tape. 1. Run the tape for 10 seconds in the P LA Y mode. (Thereafter , i t stops automatically and enters the STOP mode.) • After loading the cleaning t a pe, press the PLA Y button.

E-15 [BLANK/ P ] button • When BR-HD50 is in the STOP mode, press this button to start blank search. It searches the unrecorded part of the tape and goes into the still mode. ( X Page 54 “Blank search”) • During the STOP or REC mode, the audio recording le vel is decreased.

E-35 PREP ARA TION T ur ning on/of f the power Note After the OPERA TE but ton is pressed and BR - HD50 is turned on, if t he green indicator blinks or the monitor displays “UNP LUG MAIN PO WER, PLUG BACK IN AFTER A WHILE”, unplug the power cord from the power out let, leave it for a while before turning on the power again.
E-36 PREP ARA TION Opera tion method (main unit/ remote c ontroll er) and O PERA TION L OCK mode Whether to operate BR-HD5 0 with its buttons or the remote con- troller can be selected with the R EMOTE/LOCAL swit ch. Setting the REMOTE/L OCAL switch • T o operate with the buttons of BR-HD50, set it to “LOCAL”.
E-37 PREP ARA TION Loading /Ejec ting c asset te Use standard DV cassette tapes or mini DV cassette tapes. 1. Check the cassette t ape. • Setting the rear s witch. Push it to “REC” for recording. T o prevent its contents from being erased ac cidentally , push it to “SA VE”.
E-38 PREP ARA TION Sett ing/Dis play ing d ate and tim e This function sets up the date and time of the built-in clock. With the built-in chargeable battery , the date and time data that have been set are maintained even after the main power is turned off.
E-39 Memo The seconds for the time cannot be set up. After the minute is set up, press the SET button in synchronization with the time signal. 4. E-40 PREP ARA TION Selec ting HD signal for mat On this unit, 60Hz format or 50Hz format for the HD signal format can be selected using 60/50 S EL in the SYSTEM [2/2] Menu screen. This must be set in the following sit uations. z Set to match t he input signal format when recording HD V signals from the IEEE1394 ter minal.

E-43 Setting SYSTEM Menu screen z REC LONG P . TIME This is for setting the time for BR-HD50 to enter the tape protection mode if th ere is a long recording pause. z IND EX WRIT E: SY STEM [ 2/2] Menu This is for selecting whether to record index signals automatically when recording starts.
E-44 RECORDING Adjus ting audio r ecor din g le vel The analog audio recording level can be adjusted on this unit. The re are two adjustment methods, selected using A.REC VR.MD.: DV in the AUDIO Menu screen. The audio recording level can be set to t he initial setting value.

E-47 RECORDING Backup r ecor d ing fun ction In combination with DV equipment, BR-HD50 c an perform continuous, long-hour recording. BR-HD50 can be se t as the backup unit connected to a DVcamc order (GY -DV300/DV500/DV550/ DV5000, etc.
E-48 RECORDING Recor ding wi th SE RIAL R EMOTE ter minals Recording can b e turned ON/OFF w ith a serial re mote controller or foot switch connected to the serial remote terminal located at the rear p anel of BR-HD50. The serial remote controller can be connected to the SERIAL REMOTE terminal located on the rear panel of BR-HD50.
E-49 PL A Y BAC K Playb ack setting s This unit plays ba ck tapes recorded in HDV , DV , or DVCAM format. (SP mode only) When playing back tapes recorded in HDV or DVCAM format, the front panel HDV or DV CAM indicator is lit.

E-52 PL A Y BAC K Spec ial pl aybac k function s STL/F . ADV : DV in the SYSTEM [1/ 2] Menu screen The unit of frame advance and still images can be selected. (DV format only) FIELD : Field-by-field advance 1st FIELD : Frame-by-fram e advance and stops at the 1st field.
E-53 Set “ Q , S ” KEY FUNC in the SYSTEM [1/2] Menu screen to V AR/RECV . 1. Set BR-HD50 to the PLA YBACK or the STILL mode. 2. Press the FF button to start fast-forward playback. Press the RE W button to start reverse playback. Press the SEARCH+/ S button to increase the searc h speed.
E-54 PL A Y BAC K Sear ch functi on This function s earches to the position w here the index signal is recorded. Set “ Q , S ” KEY FUNC in the SYSTEM [1/2] Menu screen to INDEX. T o search an index point in th e forward dir ection from the cu rrent t ape positi on: • Press the SEARCH+ bu tton.
E-55 PL A Y BAC K Repeat playback Three types of r epeat playback are ava ilable for BR-HD50. The repeat playback function can be set with RE PEA T MODE in the SYSTE M [1/2] Menu screen. REPEA T MODE in the SYSTEM [1 /2] Menu screen OFF : No repeat playback.
E-56 PL A Y BAC K Mult i cue-u p Using the time codes recorded on the tape, up to 5 points on the tape can be registered as cue-up points at the Multi Cue-up screen. The registered tape positions (cue-up points) can be searched. 1. Set the COUN TER switch to TC.
E-57 1 Press the R or P button to bring the cursor to the cue-up poi nt to be chan ged. Press the S button. The hour digits of t he registered time code display blink. Press the S button to select t he digit to be changed. 2 Press the R or P bu tton again to change the time- code.
E-58 TIME CODE Displ aying the time co de This unit records or plays back the time code and user ’s bit. Whether to record the user ’s bit can be selected with U-BIT in the TC/UB/CLOCK [2/2] Menu screen (only for E model).
E-59 TIME CODE Pr esett ing the t ime c ode V a riable values can be set for the ti me code and the user ’s bit for ef ficient material management and editing. Set TCG SELECT to “PRESET” . The time code advance mode is REC-RUN mode. REC-RUN : The time code runs only during recording.
E-60 TIME CODE Recor ding the tim e code T ime codes can be recorded wit h the following ways. Whether to record user ’s bit can be selected with U-BIT in the TC/UB/CLOCK [2/2 ] Menu screen. (Only for E model) z Record it from preset data. z Record it following the one last recorded on the tape.
E-61 BR-HD50 is equ ipped with a time code reader . When it enters the RECO RD mode from the RECORD - ING P AUSE mode, it reads the tim e code data alr eady recorded on the tape and continues recording time code from t hat value. (Regeneration) Set the TC/UB/CLOCK [1 /2] Menu as follo ws.
E-62 TIME CODE Play ing bac k the time code BR-HD50 is also equipped with a ti me code reader . Du ring playback, the time code or user ’s bit data recorded on t he tape is displayed on the monitor or the c ounter display . 1. Select the ti me code data to display .
E-63 EDIT Using a non- linear e diting s ystem T ape con tents of BR-HD50 are captured by a non-li near editing system and the non-linear edited con- tents are recorded on BR-HD50. Set the REMOTE/LO CAL switch on the front p anel to REM OTE. REMOTE [1/2] M enu screen • Set REMOTE SEL 9-P IN to “ON”.
E-64 MENU SCREENS Sett ing the menu s The functions of BR -HD50 are configured in the Menu screens. The configured settings are saved in the memory of BR-HD50 and retained even aft er power off. Perform the menu settings while viewing the display on the moni- tor .
