4 Introduction Congratulations on pu rchasing this Broadband rou ter. This Broadband Router is an incredibly fast router with 20 Mbps LAN to WAN throu ghput. This Broadband Router is a cost-effective IP Sharing Router that en ables multiple users to share the Inte rnet through an ADSL or cable modem.
5 Get to know the Broadband Router Back Panel The diagram (fig1.0) below shows the broadban d router’s back panel. The rout er’s back panel is divided into three sections, LAN , WAN and Reset : Figure 1.
6 Front Pa nel On the router’s front pane l there are LED lights that inform you of the r outer’s current status. Below is an explanation of each LED and its descripti on.
7 Setup Diagram Figure 1.2 below shows a typical setu p for a Loca l Area Net work (LAN ). LAN Client s Figure 1.2.
8 Getting started This is a step-b y-step instruction on how to start u sing the router and get connected to the Internet. 1) Setup your network as sho wn in the setup diagram above (fig 1.2). 2) You then need to set your LAN PC clien ts so that it can obtain an IP address automatically.
9 • DNS Configurat ion : Select Disable DNS. • WINS Configuration : Select Disable WINS Re solution. • IP Address : Select Obtain IP address automatically . 8: Reboot the PC. Your PC will now obtain an IP address automatically from your Broadband Router’s DHCP server .
10 6: Click OK to confirm the setting. Your PC will no w obtain an IP address automat ically from your Broadband Router’s DHCP ser ver. Note : Please make sure that the Broadband router’s DHCP server is the only DHCP server available on your LAN.
11 5: After you install TCP/IP, go back to the Network window. Select TCP/IP from the list of Network Protocols and the n click the Properties button. 6: Check each of the ta bs and verify th e following settings: • IP Address: Sel ect Obta in an IP address from a DHCP server .
12 3) Once you have configure d your PCs to obtain an IP address automatically, the r outer’s DHCP server will automatically give your LAN clients an IP addres s. By default the Broadband Router’s DHCP server is enabled so tha t you can obtain an IP address automatically.
13 6) The HOME page screen belo w will appear. The Home Page is divided into four sections, Quick Setup Wizard , General Setup , Status Informatio n and Tools.
14 Menu Descri ption Quick Setup Wizard (Chapter 1) Select your Intern et connection type and then input the configur ations needed to connect to your Internet Ser vice Provider (ISP).
15 Chapter 1 Quick Setup The Quick Setup section is designed to get you using the broadband router as quick as possible. In the Quick Setup you are required to fill in only the inf ormation necessary to access the Internet. Once you click on the Quick Setup Wizard in the HOME pa ge, you shou ld see the screen below.
16 Click on NEXT to proceed to the next page (step 2 ) Broadband Type. Step 2) Broadband Type In this section you have to select one of four types of connections that you will be using to connect your b roadband router’s WAN por t to your ISP (see screen below).
17 1.1 Cable Modem Choose C able Modem if your ISP w ill automatically give you an IP address . Some ISP’ s may also require that you fill in addit ional information su ch as Host Name and MAC address (see sc reen below).
18 Click < OK> when you have finished the configur ation above. Congratulations ! You have completed the configuration for th e Cable Modem connection. You can start using the router now, if you wish to use some of the a dvance features supported by this router see chapter 2, 3, 4.
19 1.3 PPP oE Select PPPoE if your ISP r equires the PPPoE protocol to connect you to the Internet. Your ISP should provide all the informat ion required in this section.
20 MTU This is optional. You can specify the maximum size of your transmission packet to the Internet. Leave it as it is if you to not wish to set a maximum packet size. Maxi mum Id le Ti me You can specify an idle time threshold (minutes) for the WAN port.
21 Parameter Description IP Address This is the IP address that your ISP has given you to establish a PPTP conne ction. Subnet Mask Enter the Subnet Ma sk provided by your ISP (e.g. 255.25 5.255.0) Gateway Enter the IP addre ss of the ISP Gateway User ID Enter the User Name p rovided by your ISP for the PPTP connection.
22 Idle Time You can specify an idle time threshold (minutes) fo r the WAN port. This means if no packets have bee n sent (no one using the Internet) throughout this s pecified period, then the r outer will automatically disconnect the con nection with your ISP.
23 Below is a general description of what advance functions are available for this broa dband router. Menu Descriptio n 2.1 Syst em This section allows you to set the Broa dband router’s system Time Zone, Password and Remote Management Administrator .
24 2.3 LA N You can specify the LAN segment’s IP addre ss, subnet Mask, enable/disable DHCP an d select an IP range for your LAN 2.4 NAT You can configure th e Address Mapping, Virtual Server and Special Applications functions in this sectio n. This allows you to specify what us er/packet can p ass your router’s N AT.
25 Parameters Description System Settings 2.1.1 Time Zo ne Select the time zone of the coun try you are currently in. The router will set its time based on your selection. 2.1.2 Passw ord Settings Allows you to select a password in ord er to access the web-based management website.

30 Choose the Dynamic IP selectio n if your ISP will automatically give you an IP address. Some ISP’s may also require that you fill in additional information such as Host Name, Domain Name and MAC address (see chapter 1 “Cable Modem” for more detail) 2.
31 2.2.5 DNS A Domain Name System (DNS) server is like an index of IP addresses and Web addresses. If you type a Web address into your b rowser, such as www.router.com, a DNS server will find that name in its index and the matching IP addr ess. Most ISPs provide a DNS server for speed and convenience.
32 2.2.6 Br idge The bridge mode screen allo ws you to set your Broadband ro uter to bridge mode and allows you to assign an IP address for ma nagement purposes. When the bridge mode is selected , the router in effect becomes a switch, transferring pa ckets from the WAN port to the LAN po rt and vice versa without any NAT involvement.
33 Example: Bridge Mode The diagram below demonstrates how the Bridge mode can be used. The router basically becomes a hub/switch allowing you to co nnect LAN clients to your Local Area Network.

35 2.4 NAT Network Address Translation (NAT) allow s multiple users at your local site to acce ss the Internet through a single Public IP Address or multip le Public IP Addresses.

38 2.4.2 Vir tual Server Use the Virtual Server function when you want differ ent servers/clients in your LAN to hand le different service/Internet application type (e.g. Email, FTP, Web server etc.) from the Internet. Computers use numbers called port numbers to recognize a particular service/Inter net application type.

40 2.4.3 Special Appli cations Some applications r equire multiple connectio ns, such as Inte rnet games, video c onferencing, Internet telephony and others. In th is section you can configure the router to suppor t multiple connections for these types of applications.
