1 I NTRODUCTION The 3Com T okenLink III 16/4 ISA T oken R ing Adapter (3C619C) is a 16-bit network adapter . T he 3C619C adapter can be installed in any IBM -compatible UL -listed PC with an Industr y Standar d Architecture (ISA) bus or Extended Industr y Standar d Architecture (EISA) bus.
1-2 C HAPTER 1: I NTRODUCTION The 3C619C adapter can be configured in one of tw o modes: 3Com mode or IBM mode. 3C om mode increases the number of available IRQ channels fr om 4 to 8 and the number of I/O base addresses from 2 to 32. Y ou can install up to six adapters per PC.

Before you remov e the cov er of your PC, you must obser ve the follo wing steps to protect yourself and pr event damage to the PC’ s components .

Avoiding Memory Manager Conflicts 3-3 A voiding Memory Manager Conflicts If you are using a memory manager on your PC (all PCs running Microsoft Windows ha ve a memor y manager such as EMM386 or its equivalent), you need to inf orm the memor y manager of the memor y used by the 3C619C adapter .

Auto Configuring the 3C619C Adapter in an ISA PC 4-3 3 Place the T ok enDisk diskette in a floppy drive on your PC and make that drive the active driv e. Changing Software Option Settings 4-5 If you are running Windows NT or Windows 95 and installing a single adapter , the adapter’ s default configuration can be used. Install the driv er as described in Chapter 6. I f the configuration is not suitable, you can change the settings by following the pr ocedure in this chapter .

4-8 C HAPTER 4: S TANDARD I NSTALLATION AND C ONFIGURATION If you want to use the same settings on other adapters , you can sav e the configuration settings to a file. Select <Save> under the <F ile O ptions> c ommand button in the Adapter Configur ation dialog box.
Changing Software Option Settings 4-9 This completes the installation and configuration process . The next step is to install the network drivers. See Chapt er 5, “Installing Network Drivers , ” or Chapt er 6, “Installing the Network Driver f or Windows .

5-6 C HAPTER 5: I NSTALLING N ETWORK D RIVERS Installing the NDIS 2.01 Driver The Network Driver Int er face Specification (NDIS) was developed by Microsoft and 3Com. This software specification is used in network operating systems such as IBM LAN Server or M icrosoft LAN Manager to create drivers f or network adapters.
Installing the NDIS 2.01 Driver 5-7 Updating the PC Startup Files This sample procedure describes ho w to modify the PRO TOC OL.INI and CONFIG.SYS PC startup files to load the NDIS drivers for a PC running LAN Manager . 1 Create a LANMAN subdir ec tory from the root of y our boot disk using the following c ommand: MD LANMAN 2 Build a PRO TOC OL.

P arameters must be added to the file to distinguish each adapter attached to the same driver .
Updating the Current NDIS Driver 5-9 Updating the C urrent NDIS Driv er If you are updating an existing NDIS driver (rather than installing one for the first time), follow these st eps: 1 Fr om the main menu, selec t Network Drivers and press [Enter].
5-10 C HAPTER 5: I NSTALLING N ETWORK D RIVERS T o use the IBM 16/4 T oken Ring Adapter drivers supplied with your network operating system, copy them to y our PC and follow an y provided instructions.
Using IBM Drivers 5-11 Enabling RPL The follo wing instruc tions explain how t o use the RPL program when your PC has both a hard disk driv e and a floppy disk drive. Ref er to your network operating system documentation for the steps to be performed on the network to use RPL and f or information on different drivers that you can load with RPL.

Type A:WINNT351EISA if you installed the adapter in an EISA slot using the EISA configuration utility (that is , auto-sense is enabled and the I/O base address = EISA).

7-2 C HAPTER 7: T ROUBLESHOOTING Figure 7-1 Adapter LEDs When lit, the green LED (labeled “4”) indicates that the adapter is set to 4 Mbps speed and is correctly inser ted int o the ring. When lit, the yellow LED (labeled “16”) indicates that the adapter is set to 16 Mbps and is correctly inser ted into the ring .
Using the TokenDisk Diskette Diagnostic Program 7-3 If you have alr eady installed the net work driv er , you need to reboot and press [F5] or use a DOS diskette to b ypass the drivers before y ou run the diagnostic program. Use a DOS diskette if you ar e running DOS 5.
7-4 C HAPTER 7: T ROUBLESHOOTING Diagnostic T est T ypes The tests performed by the T okenDisk diskette C onfiguration and Diagnostic Pr ogram are divided into Group 1 and Group 2 tests. A lobe cable must be c onnected from the selected adapter to a retiming conc entrator or MAU for all tests .
Diagnostic Test Types 7-5 AIP Checksum T est This test verifies that the adapt er ’ s node ID , channel identifier , and suppor ted function identifiers such as data rate, shared RAM, and transmit buffer size are corr ec t.
7-6 C HAPTER 7: T ROUBLESHOOTING Group 2 Diagnostic The Group 2 diagnostic (A dapter W rap T est) is a wrap test that causes all user-transmitted data to be sent and receiv ed without going to the network. A lobe cable must be c onnected from the selected adapter to a retiming conc entrator or MAU for all tests .
Diagnostic Test Types 7-7 If you want to run the tests continuously , selec t the Continuous option in the T est Setup dialog box, as described in the next section, “Changing the T est Setup.
7-8 C HAPTER 7: T ROUBLESHOOTING Changing the T est Setup If you want to change the test parameters , follow these steps: 1 Choose the <T est Setup> command button in the Run T ests dialog box shown in F igure 7-4. The T est Setup dialog box appears, as shown in F igure 7-5.
Adapter Statistics and Information 7-9 When T ests F ail If any test fails , you can get additional information b y highlighting the test that failed in the Run T ests dialog box shown in F igure 7-4, and pressing [Enter]. Y ou can also highlight the <Zoom> command button and pr ess [Enter].

When Tests Fail 7-11 The follo wing information is displayed on the screen, indicating what to do when the specific test fails. MMIO Register W rite/Read T est F ailure ■ Check the ROM base address setting on the adapter and make sure that it is not being used by another device.
7-12 C HAPTER 7: T ROUBLESHOOTING Shared RAM W rite/Read T est F ailure ■ Make sure the shared RAM address does not conflict with the adapter ROM or another device. ■ Run the test three times with a delay of at least 30 seconds between each test.
Troubleshooting Tips 7-13 Close A dapter T est F ailure ■ Make sure a lobe cable is properly connected to the adapter and that the other end of the cable is connected to a DA U, MAU, or CA U. ■ Run the test three times with a delay of at least 30 seconds between each test.
7-14 C HAPTER 7: T ROUBLESHOOTING 4 Make sure that the settings (memory allocations, interrupts, and so on) for the adapter do not conflict with the PC or other adapter boards installed in the PC.
Additional Information 7-15 12 Replace the failed adapter with a known working adapter . If the second adapter fails, something is probably wrong with the test envir onment, not the adapter . Additional Inf ormation T roubleshooting help can be found in three other locations .

Configuration Options B-3 C onfiguration Options This section contains the configuration options for the 3C619C adapter . The follo wing options are available: ■ Configuration Mode ■ Ring Speed.
B-4 A PPENDIX B: S PECIFICATIONS Ring Speed The 3C619C adapter operates at either 4- or 16-Mbps ring speed. The adapter ring speed must match the speed of the token ring network. The default is 16 Mbps. I/O Base Addr ess In IBM mode when only one adapter is installed , it is designated the Primary adapter .

C-2 A PPENDIX C: E RROR M ESSAGES An adapter was configured from EISA t o ISA mode, but the EISA configuration utility has not run yet. Place your EISA configuration diskette in drive A, and reboot the PC. An EISA configured adapter is installed in an ISA PC.
Messages C-3 The adapter’ s BIOS/MMIO base address is in conflict with another device installed in the system. T o run diagnostic tests, you must reconfigure the adapt er to another BIOS/MMIO base address. The BIOS/MMIO domain conflicts with the Shared RAM domain.
C-4 A PPENDIX C: E RROR M ESSAGES The value xxxx at line xxxx in the configuration file is not suppor ted . A list of supported option settings is provided in the INSTRUCT .TXT file in the DIAG subdirector y of this diskette. The value xxxx on the command line is not supported.
