10 – Getting Ready to Sew UNP A CKING 1. Place the machine on a sturdy , fl at surface , remov e the packaging and lift off the cover . 2. R emove the pac king material and the foot control. 3. The machine is deliv ered with an accessor y bag, a pow er cord and a foot control cord.
1 2 1 2 3 Getting Ready to Sew – 11 CONNECTING THE FOO T CONTR OL CORD Among the accessories you will fi nd the foot control cord and the pow er cord. Connecting the foot control cord to the foot control is only necessar y the v er y fi rst time you are g oing to use the machine .
A 12 – Getting Ready to Sew LO WER THE FEED TEETH The feed teeth are lowered when y ou move the switc h on the front of the free ar m to the right. Move the switc h to the left if you wish to raise the feed teeth. T he feed teeth will raise as you begin to sew .

A B 14 – Getting Ready to Sew SPOOL PINS AND SPOOL C APS Y our sewing machine has two spool pins , a main spool pin and an auxiliar y spool pin. The spool pins are designed for all types of thread.

1. 2. 3. 4. A B C 5. 16 – Getting Ready to Sew NEEDLE THREADER The needle must be in the up position to use the built-in needle threader . W e also recommend lowering the presser foot. 1. Use the handle to pull the needle threader all the wa y down, catc hing the thread under the guide (A).
A B D C Getting Ready to Sew – 17 THREADING FOR TWIN NEEDLE Pr ess the ON/OFF switch to OFF . 1. Insert a twin needle. 2. Use a second thread spool or wind a bobbin with the thread you are going to use as the second upper thread. 3. Lift the spool pin up and all the wa y to the right.

Do not use a plastic pr esser foot w hen bobbin winding . 1. Place an empty bobbin on the bobbin spindle on the top of the machine.

1 2 3 20 – Getting Ready to Sew THREAD TENSION, 650 Use the recommended top thread tension setting giv en on the GraphicDisplay . Y ou might need to adjust the top thread tension for special threads , fabrics and/or techniques . T o set the tension, turn the numbered tension dial.

C Operating your Opal ™ 650 – 27 PR OGRAMMING 650 The Prog ramming function on your mac hine makes it possible to create stitches with y our own personal settings and to combine stitches and letters into stitc h prog rams . Y ou can add up to 20 stitches and letters in the same program.
28 – Operating your Opal ™ 650 Add Stitches or Letters at other P ositions If you wish to add a stitch or letter at another position in the program, move the cursor by pressing the Na vig ator Ar ro ws . The stitch or letter will be inserted to the right of the cursor.
D Operating your Opal ™ 650 – 29 Sew out the Stitch Pr ogram When you are done with your program press My Stitches to sav e it (see below) or , if still in Prog ramming Mode, press PR OG or ste p on the foot control to switch to Sewing Mode . Once you are in Sewing Mode and step on the foot control the machine will sew out y our stitch program.

42 – Pop-up Messages POP-UP MESSA GES Please Low er the Presser F oot Y our machine will not sew if the presser foot is in the up position. Low er the presser foot. Close the pop-up message with OK. Y ou can also tap the foot control to close the pop- up message.
Pop-up Messages – 43 Main Motor Overload If you are sewing on very heavy fabric or if the machine is block ed when sewing, the main motor can get overloaded.

There are a number of different Seam/ Overcast stitc hes on your sewing mac hine to give the best result for your c hosen fabric.
7 J eans Hem – W oven Hea vy and Hem Sewing – 49 HEM The Hem technique on your Ex clusive SEWING AD VISOR™ feature will select the visible or topstitch hem that is best for your fabric w eight and type. F or wo ven fabric and leather and vinyl, a straight stitc h is selected.
50 – Sewing SEWING BUTT ONHOLES The buttonholes in your sewing machine are specially adjusted for different kinds of fabric and g ar ments . Lear n about different buttonholes and when to use them by studying the stitc h table in the ov er view chapter .
Sewing – 51 Manual Buttonholes A buttonhole can also be sewn step by step without the Sensor One-Step Buttonhole F oot connected. Use Rev erse to set the length of the buttonhole. 1. Snap on Presser F oot C. 2. Place the fabric and stabilizer under the presser foot.
Button Sewing , 650 Button Sewing , 670 A 52 – Sewing SEWING ON BUTT ONS Sew buttons , snaps , hooks and eyes quickly with your sewing machine . Select the fabric you are using and the stitc h for sewing on buttons 1:29 (650) / 1:33 (670). 1. Snap off the presser foot and lower the feed teeth.
Sewing – 53 SEWING ZIPPERS The Zipper Foot E can be snapped on either the right or the left of the needle, making it easy to sew both sides of the zipper . T o sew the other side of the zipper, reposition the Zipper F oot. Mov e the needle position far left or far right to stitch close to the zipper teeth or cording .

Sewing – 55 QUIL TING A quilt usually consists of three layers, tw o layers of fabric with a layer of batting sandwiched between. T o sew three layers together, you ha ve a wide variety of stitches and techniques to c hoose from.
SPECIALITY STITCHES The special sewing technique stitches are stitc hes that are sewn with special presser feet (optional) to create exciting effect s. These stitches are 4:37-40 (650) / 4:42-50 (670). When selected this is indicated by the optional presser foot icon (A) on the GraphicDisplay/T ouchScreen.
Sewing – 57 SMOCKING STITCHES Smocking is a tec hnique used to g ather fabric so that it can stretc h. Smocking has been used since the Middle Ages and was commonly used in gar ments where buttons were undesirable . The fabric was gathered or pleated and the gathers were then held in place by different types of stitches .
PICT OGRAM STITCHES (Only on 670) The pictog ram stitches (1:39-42) can be programmed and used to create stitch embroideries . Below , fi nd a sample on ho w to create a fl ow er using pictog ram stitches . F or best result when stitching pictog ram stitches , use rayon embroidery thread on top and embroider y w eight bobbin thread.

A 2 1 60 – T aking Care of your Machine CLEANING THE MA CHINE T o keep your sewing machine operating w ell, clean it often. No lubrication (oiling) is needed. Wipe the exterior surfaces of your sewing machine with a soft cloth to remov e any dust or lint built up .
