5 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR POWER SUPPL Y UNIT • Use the correct external pow er source A product should be operated only from the type of power sour ce indicated on the electrical ratings label. If you are not sure of the type of power sour ce required, c onsult your authorized service provider or local power compan y .

20 Getting Started 1.2 Installing the USIM/SIM Card , Battery , and Stor age Card Always turn off your devic e before installing or remo ving the USIM/SIM card or battery. The USIM/SIM card contains y our phone number , ser vice details, and phonebook/message memory.

Hold the device securely with the front facing down. 3. With your thumb or finger , lif t up the bottom of the back cov er .
22 Getting Started T o install the battery Install the battery by inser ting it with its exposed copper part aligned with the protruding copper conductor on the lower-right side of the battery compar tment. Inser t the bottom side of the battery first, then gently push the battery into place.

Getting Started 25 Calibra te the device Calibrating the touch scr een involves tapping the c enter of a cross with the stylus as the cross moves around the scr een. This process ensur es that when you tap the screen with your stylus , the tapped item is activated.

Pr essing the POWER button again or new incoming calls/ messages will wake up your device . 1.4 The T oday Screen The T oday screen displa ys important information, such as upcoming appointments and status indicators .
Getting Started 27 1.5 The Start Menu The Start menu, located at the top left corner of the T oday screen, display s a list of programs . Y ou can start a program by scrolling through the pr ograms list and then pressing ENTER, or by tapping a prog ram with the stylus.
28 Getting Started 1.6 Quick Menu The Quick Menu, located at the top right c orner of the T oday screen, shows the currently running programs . Y ou can quick ly switch between running programs , stop programs , and see how much program memory is being used.
Getting Started 29 1.8 HT C Home™ HTC H ome™ is a T oday screen plug-in that giv es you up-to- date local information at a glance , such as time, day and wea ther information, and shows new messages and missed calls.
30 Getting Started Home Home displays the current da y , date and local time. When you have new incoming messages and calls, it shows y ou the number of new e-mails, SMS/MMS messages, and missed calls. If you hav e set up the alarm, it also shows the Alarm icon.

With T ouchFLO , you can simply use your finger to scroll and pan the screen. T ouchFL O also features the T ouch Cube where you can launch messag ing programs , Internet Explorer® Mobile, and more.
Getting Started 35 T o navigate the T ouch Cube The T ouch Cube is a three-dimensional, cubic user interface. T o flip the interface from one side to another , slide your finger left or right on the touch screen.
36 Getting Started Select an empty slot to add a favorite contact. If the contact has more than one contact number , selec t the number to call when you touch the contact. Open Call History. (See Chapter 3 for details.) T ap to call the number associated with the contact.

52 Entering and Searching Information 2.1 Entering Informa tion When you start a program or select a field that requires te xt or numbers, you can either use the 16-key hardwar e keypad or one of the onscreen input methods to enter information. 16-key har dware k eypad T o reveal the 16-key keypad, slide up the fr ont panel of the device.

As you ent er letters, XT9 analyzes your keypr esses and attempts to complete the wor d. XT9 also tries to predict your next word based on previous sentences y ou have type.

64 Using Phone F eatures 3.1 Using the Phone Like a standard mobile phone, y ou can use your device to make, r eceive , and keep track of calls and send messages. Y ou can also dial directly from Contacts, and easily cop y phonebook entries from your SIM card t o Contacts on your device.
Using Phone F eatures 65 Airplane Mode Another way to turn off the phone function is to switch your devic e to Airplane Mode . T o enable or disable Airplane Mode When you enable Airplane Mode, it turns off all wireless radios on y our device, which include the phone function and Bluetooth.
