Phone Basics 23 1.2 Installing the SIM Card , Battery , and Storage Car d Always turn off your phone bef ore installing or replacing the SIM car d, battery , and storage card. Y ou also need to remove the back cov er before y ou can install the SIM card and battery .
24 Phone Basics SIM card The SIM card contains y our phone number , service details, and phonebook/ message memory. Y our phone supports both 1.8V and 3V SIM cards. Note Some legacy SIM cards may not function with your phone. Y ou should consult your wireless service provider for a replac ement SIM card.
Phone Basics 25 Battery Y our phone comes with a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery and is designed to use only manufacturer-specified original batteries and accessories. Ba ttery per formance depends on many factors, including network configuration, sig nal strength, and more.
26 Phone Basics Storage card T o store your pictures, music, and applica tions, install the supplied microSD™ card into your phone . Note Y ou need to install the microSD card before you can use the C amera application. T o install the storage card Make sure the phone is turned off .

Phone Basics 29 1.5 Getting Around Y our Phone Use finger gestures, the TRACKBALL, or a combination of both when navigating around your Home screen, menus and applica tion screens. Finger gestur es A quick and easy way to inter act with the Home screen and the whole interface of your phone is by touch.
30 Phone Basics The following ar e some instances when you would use dr agging: Moving or deleting a Home screen item T ouch and hold an application icon, widget, or folder on the Home screen. When the item magnifies drag y our finger to any part of the screen to move the item, or drag the it em to the T rash button to delete it.
Phone Basics 31 Enter your PIN If your SIM card is preset with a PIN (personal identification number), y ou will be prompted to ent er the PIN to proceed. En ter the SIM PIN, and then touch OK . T o k now how to enable or disable the SIM PIN, see “P rotecting Y our Phone ” in Chapter 10.
32 Phone Basics 1.7 Home Screen The Home screen is your starting point for using the applications on y our phone. Y ou can customize the Home screen to display application ic ons, shortcuts, folders, and widgets according to y our prefer ence. Notifications (See “Phone Status and Notifications” in this chapter for details.
Phone Basics 33 Extended Home screen The Home screen extends beyond the scr een width to provide more spac e for adding icons, widgets , and more. P ress HOME, and then slide y our finger horizontally across the screen t o go to the left or right side of the extended Home screen.
34 Phone Basics Cust omize the Home screen T o add a Home screen item Press HOME, and then t ouch and hold the screen. When the Add to Home menu opens , select the item you want to add to the Home screen: Shortcuts Add shortcuts such as applications, a bookmarked web page, a favorite contact, a Gmail label, or a music pla ylist.
Phone Basics 35 Note T o move an item from the Home screen to an extended Home screen, touch and hold the item then drag it to the left or right edge of the screen until the display shifts to the extended Home screen. Position the item on the scr een and then release it.
36 Phone Basics T o change the screen orientation Slide open the keyboard or hold the phone sideways t o change the screen orientation into landscape mode. T o create a folder and add items t o it Y ou can create folders on the Home scr een to hold application icons or shortcuts.
Phone Basics 37 1.8 Setting Up a Google Accoun t The first time you access a Google service such as Google T alk™, Gmail™, or Android Market™, you will be prompted to cr eate a Google account or sign in to y our existing Google account (could be a Google Mail or Gmail account).

Phone Basics 41 Notifications panel Notification icons report the arrival of new messages, calendar events, alarm set and ongoing settings such as when call forwarding is on or the current call status. Y ou can open the Notifications panel to open the message, reminder , or event notification and know your wireless service provider name.
42 Phone Basics 1.10 Applications The Applications tab holds all installed applications on your phone . All icons of applications that you downloaded and installed fr om Android Market or from the web are also added to the Applica tions tab.
Phone Basics 43 1.11 Settings Control and customiz e phone settings on the Settings screen. T o open the Settings screen, do any of the following: Press HOME > MENU , and then touch Settings . On the Home screen, touch the Applications tab , and then touch Settings .
44 Phone Basics 1.12 Adjusting the V olume Adjusting the Ringer volume changes the volume lev el of the phone ring tone, whereas adjusting the Media v olume changes the volume level of sound notifications and music or video playback. The ringer volume and media volume can be separately adjusted.

2.1 Making Calls When you press the CALL ( ) button on your phone, the Dailer application opens . Y ou can place a call from the Dialer , or from the Contacts , Call log , or F a vorites tab of the Contacts application. CALL button Use the Dialer Use the Dialer to enter and call a phone number .

Notes • When the screen is locked, press the MENU butt on, and then touch Emergency call to open the emergency dialer .
50 Using Phone F eatures and Managing Con tacts 2.2 Answ ering or Rejecting Calls When you receiv e a phone call from someone in Contacts, the Incoming call scr een appears and displays the caller ID icon, name , and phone number of the calling part y .
Using Phone F eatures and Managing Con tacts 51 2.3 Call Options When a call is in progress , press MENU to open the call options . T ouch the available buttons on the call options menu to put a call on hold, dial another con tact for a phone conferenc e, mute the phone microphone , and more.
52 Using Phone F eatures and Managing Con tacts T o turn the speakerphone on or off During a call, press MENU , and then touch Speaker to t oggle between turning the speakerphone on or off. The Speaker button indicator lights up gr een and the speakerphone icon ( ) appears in the status bar when the speakerphone is on.
Using Phone F eatures and Managing Con tacts 53 T o end a call When a call is in progress , you can do any of the f ollowing to hang up: Press the END CALL/POWER button. Press MENU , and then touch End call . If you are using the provided wir ed headset, press and hold the button to end the call.
54 Using Phone F eatures and Managing Con tacts T o end the second call and return to the first call, press the END CALL/POWER button on your phone. T o end the first call and take the incoming call, press MENU , and then touch End current call & answer .
Using Phone F eatures and Managing Con tacts 55 T o add a new phone number to Contacts If the phone number of the person who called is not in your contacts list, you can choose to save the number after you hang up . While on any screen, pr ess CALL > MENU, and then touch Call log .
56 Using Phone F eatures and Managing Con tacts 2.5 Adjusting the Phone Settings Y ou can adjust the phone settings of your phone such as your voice mail number , or enable additional call services from your wireless service provider . T o open the phone settings menu, press HOME > MENU, and then t ouch Settings > Call settings .
Using Phone F eatures and Managing Con tacts 57 Tip When you disable Airplane Mode, the phone function is turned back on and the previous state of Bluetooth and W i-Fi is rest ored. 2.7 Creating and Managing Y our Contacts Similar to an online address book, the Contacts application giv es you quick and easy access to the people you w ant to reach.
58 Using Phone F eatures and Managing Con tacts Add a new c ontact When you open Contacts for the first time , you are pr esented with options on how you can easily import your contacts into your phone. T ouch to impor t contacts from your Exchange ActiveSync account .

60 Using Phone F eatures and Managing Con tacts T o import contacts from the Microsof t Exchange A ctiveSync Server If you have set up an Ex change ActiveSync account on y our phone, you can add contacts from that account t o the phone’ s Contacts list.
Using Phone F eatures and Managing Con tacts 61 Notes • When the contact is imported from your Gmail account, the wor d Google will appear at the right side of the contact. • If you imported a contact from a Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync account, the wor d Exchange will appear at the right side of the con tact.
62 Using Phone F eatures and Managing Con tacts T o change the contact’ s default phone number The default phone number of a contact appears below the contact’ s name in the contacts list. The default phone number is used when you initiat e a call or send an SMS/MMS message from the contacts list (by touching and holding a contact).

Using Phone F eatures and Managing Con tacts 67 Synchroniz e contacts When you set up HT C Sync, y ou were asked to set when y ou want to synchronize with the PC. Depending on the option you have selected, y ou may need to manually start synchronization or it will automatically start synchronization when you connect the phone to the PC.

3.1 Using the K eyboard When you start an application or select a field that requires text or numbers, you can open and use the QWERT Y keyboard to enter inf ormation. The keyboard is similar to a standard keyboard on y our computer . Open the keyboard Hold your device sideway s, with the control buttons on the right.

74 En teri ng T ex t Auto-cap . When enabled , the first letter in a text field or the first letter after a period ( . ), question mark ( ? ), or exclamation point ( ! ) is automatically capitalized. Auto-punctuate . When enabled, a period ( . ) is automatically inserted to the text when you press the SP ACEBAR twice .
4.1 Using C alendar Use Calendar to cr eate and manage events, meetings , and appointments. Depending on your synchronization settings, the C alendar on your phone stays in sync with your Calendar on the web . Note For mor e information about Calendar synchronization, see “Synchronizing Google Apps” in Chapter 10.

Managing Y our Time 7 7 Calendar view s Y ou can display the Calendar in daily , weekly , monthly , or agenda view . T o change the Calendar view , press MENU , and then touch Day , W eek , Month , or Agenda .
78 Managing Y our Time While in a calendar view you can: T o quick ly view the event’ s details while in Day or W eek view, highlight it using the TRACKBALL. A quick view window appears on the lo wer part of the screen. T ouch an event to edit or view details.

Managing Y our Time 8 1 T ouch an option to adjust the alarm settings. Time left before the alarm goes off. 3. T ouch Ringtone , then selec t the alarm ring tone. The ring tone briefly play s when selected. Note T ouch Vibrate if you w ant the phone to also vibrate when the alarm goes off .
82 Managing Y our Time Cust omize Alarm Clock Y ou can change the appearance of the clock displayed on the Alarm Clock screen. On the Alarm Clock screen, touch the clock with your finger to open the clock selection screen. Available clock display s appear at the bottom of the screen.
5.1 Sending T ext and Multimedia Messages Messaging lets you compose and send te xt (SMS) and multimedia messages (MMS) to other mobile phones. Open Messaging T o open the Messaging application, press HOME, touch the Applications tab , then touch Messaging .
84 Exchanging Messages Creat e and send SMS and MMS messages Y ou can compose text (SMS) messages of up to 160 characters. If you continue to type after the limit is reached, your message will be deliver ed as one, but count as more than one message. These are called concatenated messages.
Exchanging Messages 85 3. Roll the TRACKBALL down to select the text box, then start composing your message. Note As you near the 160-character limit, a counter will appear in the top right corner of the text box to tell you ho w much characters are left.
86 Exchanging Messages Videos . Opens the Gallery application. T ouch a video on the screen to attach it to your message . Capture video . Opens the Camcor der application. T ake a video, and then touch Select this video to attach it to your message. F or more information about the Camcor der application, refer t o “Record videos” in Chapter 8.
Exchanging Messages 87 When finished, touch Done to attach the slidesho w to your message. T ouch Preview to view the slide. Tip Y ou can create a slideshow of up to ten slides . W hen editing multiple slides, touch to edit the next slide or touch to return to the previous slide.
88 Exchanging Messages Receiv e text and multimedia messages Depending on your notification settings, the device will pla y a ring tone, vibrate , or display the message briefly in the status bar when you rec eive a new text or multimedia message.
Exchanging Messages 89 T o return to the message list from a text message thread, pr ess , then touch All threads . Notes • T o view the details of a par ticular message, in the message thread, touch and hold the message to open the options menu, and then touch View message details .
90 Exchanging Messages T o reply to a text or multimedia message 1. In the message list, touch a text or multimedia message thread to open it. 2. Use the TRACKBALL to na vigate to the text box at bott om of the screen, enter your reply message , and then touch Send or press .

92 Exchanging Messages Notification settings Notifications Select this option if you want to receiv e a notification in the status bar when a new text or multimedia message arrives.
Exchanging Messages 93 The Inbox conv ersations list (hereinafter ref erred to as Inbox) is your default Gmail view . All your rec eived emails are deliver ed to your Inbox. T o refresh Gmail Press MENU and then t ouch Refresh to send or receiv e new emails and to synchronize your emails with y our Gmail account on the web .
94 Exchanging Messages T o add a signature to emails Y ou can add a signature to email messages that you send . In the Inbox, press MENU and then touch Settings > Signature . Enter your signatur e in the text box, and then touch OK . Tip Y ou can create a signatur e consisting of multiple lines of text.
Exchanging Messages 95 T o view emails Do one of the following: Press HOME, then t ouch and hold the status bar , and then slide down your finger on the screen to open the Notifications panel. T ouch the new email to view it. While in the Inbox, touch the unread email or the conversa tion with the unread email to view it.
96 Exchanging Messages Reply to or forward emails In the message thread, scroll down t o the end of the conversa tion. 2. T ouch Reply , Reply to all , or Forward . 3. Do one of the following: If you selected Reply or Reply all , enter your reply message .
Exchanging Messages 97 Add star or Remov e star to assign a star or remo ve the star on the conversa tion . Change labels to add or change the label of the conv ersation. Note Y ou cannot use the phone to create labels; do that on the Gmail web site. Report spam to repor t the conv ersation as spam.
98 Exchanging Messages Confirm delete Select the check box to sho w a confirmation box when you delete a con versation. Batch operations Select the check box to sho w the batch operations feature . The Batch opera tions feature lets y ou archive , delete, or apply a label to multiple emails at once.

Exchanging Messages 101 Add a Microsoft Exchange A ctiveSync ac count Y ou can only add one Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync account on y our phone. The account must be can sync with a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Ser vice P ack 2 (SP2) or Microsoft Exchange Server 2007.
102 Exchanging Messages Compose and send emails 1. Press HOME, t ouch the Applications tab, and then t ouch Mail . 2. On the email account Inbox, press MENU and then t ouch Compose . Note If the current email account is not the account y ou want to use, pr ess MENU and then touch More > Ac counts list to choose a differ ent email account.
Exchanging Messages 103 T o delete a message 1. On the email account Inbox, touch and hold the email y ou want to delete . 2. On the options menu, touch Delete . When pr ompted to confirm deletion, touch OK . Edit or delete an email acc ount Y ou can edit or delete an external email account on your phone.

106 Exchanging Messages T o change your online status and message 1. T ouch the online status icon ( ) beside your name, and then select the status you want on the menu. 2. T ouch the text box on the right of your online status icon and then enter y our status message using the keyboard.
Exchanging Messages 107 T o switch between active chats Y ou can switch between chats if you have mor e than one chat going. 1. While on a chat screen or in the friends list, press MENU and then touch Swit ch chats . 2. On the panel that opens, touch the friend you want to chat with.
108 Exchanging Messages T o block a friend Y ou can block a friend from sending you messages. When blocked, y our friend is also removed fr om your F riends list. 1. In the Friends list, locate the friend you w ant to block. Note If you cannot see the friend, Press MENU and then t ouch All friends .
Exchanging Messages 109 Mobile indicators Y ou can check what type of device your friend is using to chat in Google T alk. I n the friends list, check the image that appears to the right of your friend’ s name. Indicates that the friend is using an Android phone.
110 Exchanging Messages Select the Vibrat e check box to vibrate y our phone when you rec eive a new instant message. T o sign in automatically Y ou can sign in to your Google T alk account automatically every time you turn on your phone. In the Friends list, press MENU and touch More > Settings .
