Turn off the device Turn off the HP product by pressing the Power but ton located on t he product. Wait un til the Power light turns o ff before unpluggi ng the power cord or tu rning off a pow er source.

Recommended pape rs for photo printing If you want t he best print quality, HP reco mmends using HP papers that are specifically designed for t he type of project you are printing. Depending on your country/region, som e of these papers mig ht not be available .

Load media This section pro vides instructions for load ing media into the device. Load Tray 1 (mai n tray) 1. Lift the outp ut tray. 2. Slide the me dia guide out to th e widest setting. 3. Insert the media print-side do wn along the right of the tray .
5. Pull out the e xtension on the out put tray. NOTE: For media longer th an 279 mm (11 inches), pull th e extension out to the maximum extend ed position. Make sure the flap a t the end of the extension t ray is not lifted , otherwise it will in terfere with the paper bei ng ejected.
To change default settings fo r all future jobs (Windows) 1. Click Star t , point to Settings , and then click Printers or Printers and Faxes . - Or - Click Star t , click Control Panel , and then double-click Printers . NOTE: If prompted, ente r the computer administrator's password.
• For auto-dup lexing, when printing fi nishes on one side of th e media, the device hol ds the media and pa uses while the ink dries. Then th e media is pulled back into t he device and the se cond side is printed. When printing is complete, t he media is dropped onto the output tray.
4. Select the media size from the Size dro p-down list. If you do not see th e media size, create a custom media size. a .S e l e c t Custom from the drop -down list. b . Type a name for the n ew custom size. c .I n t h e Width and Height boxes, type the dimensions, and then click Save .
NOTE: Open the file in a software appl ication and assign the image size. Make sure the size corresponds t o the media size on which you a re printing the image.
Print a Web page (Windows only) You can print a Web page f rom your Web browser on the HP Print er. If you use Internet E xplorer 6.0 or hig her for Web browsing , you can use HP Smart Web Printing to ensure simple, predictable Web printing wit h control over wh at you want a nd how you wan t it printed.
4 Configure and manage This inform ation is intended for the administrator or indivi dual who is responsibl e for managing the de vice. This section cont ains information ab out the followin g topics:.
Monitor the device Use this tool... to obtain the foll owing informa tion... Device control panel Obtain information about the status of jobs that are being processed, the operating status of the device, and the status of ink cartridges.

Embedded Web server When the devic e is connected to a network, you can use the embedded Web server to view status in formation, change settings, and manage i t from your compute r. NOTE: For a list of system requirements for the embedded Web server, see Embedded Web se rver specifications .
You can open the emb edded Web server by using these methods: • Web browser: In a supported Web browser on yo ur computer, type the I P address or hostname that ha s been assigned to the de vice. For example, if th e IP address is 123.123.123.123, type the following ad dress into the Web brow ser: http://123.

Open the HP Printer Utility To open the HP Printer Utility fr om the HP Device Manager 1. Click the HP Device Man ager icon in the Dock. NOTE: If the icon does not ap pear in the Dock, click t he Spotlight icon on the right side of t he menu bar, type HP Device Manager in the box, and then click the HP Device Manager entry.
Use the HP Device Manager (Mac O S X) To open the HP Device Manager on a Macintosh computer 1. Click the HP Device M anager icon in the Dock. NOTE: If the icon doe s not appear in the Dock, click the Spotli ght icon on the right side of the men u bar, type HP Device Manager in the box, and then click the HP Device Mana ger en try.
1. Printer Information: Shows device informatio n (such as the product name, mod el number, serial number, and firmware version number), the accessori es that are installed (such as the duplexer), and the number of pages printed from the trays and accessories.
Understand the network conf iguration or wireless status report The network confi guration or wireless status rep ort shows the net work or wireless set tings for the device.
3. 802.11 Wireless (some models): Shows information about your wireless network connection, su ch as the hostname, IP address, subn et mask, default gateway, and server. 4. Misc ellaneous: Shows i nformation, such as the admini strator details. • mDNS: Shows i nformation ab out the active Mu lticast Domain N ame System (mDNS) connect ion.
NOTE: You can also share the d evice with other computers using a simple fo rm of networking know n as locally shared networking. For mo re information, see To share the device on a locally shared net work .
Network connection If the device h as network capability, it can be shared in a network environment b y connecting it directly to the netwo rk. This type of conn ection offers the a bility to manage the device using th e embedded Web server from any compu ter on the network.
A client c omputer can conn ect to the device in the foll owing ways: • In the Printe rs folder, doub le-click the Add Printer icon and follow the instructions for a network inst allation. For more informa tion, see Install th e printer driver using Add Printer .
To share th e device on a locally shared network When you con nect the device directly, you can share it with other computers using a simple form of networking known as locall y shared networking. Use thi s configuration only in smal l groups or when usage is low .

◦ Be on the same sub net and same channel ◦ Have the same 802.11 security set tings • Infrastructure (recommended): On an infra structure n etwork, th e devic e is set to infrastructure co mmunication mode and communicate s with other devices on the network, whether the devices are wi red or wireless, throug h a WAP.
4. When prompted, t emporarily connect the USB wireless setu p cable. 5. Follow the o nscreen instructions to complet e the installation. 6. Disconnec t the USB wirel ess setup cabl e when prompted. To set up the device on a wireless c ommunication using the installe r (Mac OS X) 1.
(and you know the H P device is on the network), or you have already successfully installed HP sof tware and experience prob lems, try the follow ing: 1. If you are using a comput er running Windows, in the firew all configuration util ity, look for an option to trust computers on the local subnet (sometimes cal led the “scope“ or “zone“).
Change from a USB con nection to a wireless connec tion (Mac OS X) 1. Click the HP De vice Manager icon on t he Dock or in the Hewl ett Packard folder in the Applications f older. 2. From the Information and Settings list, select Network Printer Setup U tility .
• Change t he password periodicall y. • Change the default password provided b y the manufacturer for admi nistrator access to the access point or wireless rout er. Some routers let you change the administrator name as wel l. • Turn off admi nistrative access over wireless if possible.
10. Press the Power button to turn the device on . After connecting and turning on the devi ce, you might have to wait several minutes for all of the Plug an d Play events to complete. 11. Follow the on screen instructions. When the softwar e installa tion is comple te, the HP Digi tal Imag ing Monitor icon appears in the Windows system tray.
To uninstall from a Maci ntosh computer, method 1 1. Launch HP Device Manager . 2. Click Information a nd Settings . 3. Select Uninstall HP software from the pull-down menu . Follow t he onscree n instructions. 4. After the softw are is uninstalled, re start your computer.

• Turn off the HP Prin ter by pressing the Power butto n located on the product. Wa it until the Power light turns of f before unplu gging the power cord or turning off a pow er strip.
Replace the ink car tridges NOTE: For information on recycling used ink supplies, see HP inkjet supplies recycling program . If you do not already have replaceme nt ink cartridges for the HP Printer, see Order printing supplie s online . NOTE: At this time, so me portions of the HP Web site are ava ilable in English only.
5. Twist the ora nge cap to snap it off. NOTE: Make sure the plastic ta b is entirely removed and that the label is slight ly torn, reveal ing the vent channel. 6. Using the col ored shaped icons for help, sli de the ink cartridge into t he empty slot until it cli cks into place and is seat ed firmly in the slot .
Make sure that you i nsert the ink cartridge into the slot that has the same shaped icon and color as the o ne you are instal ling. 7. Repeat steps 3 th rough 6 for each ink cartrid ge you are replacing.
Print and evaluate a print qual ity report Print quality proble ms can have many causes: software sett ings, a poor image file , or the printing system itself. If you are unhappy with the quality of your prints, a Print Quality Diagnostic pag e can help you determine if t he printing system is working properly.

Preventing the p roblem that causes ragge d bars on the Print Quality Di agnostic report: • Avoid leaving op ened ink cartridges outside of the printer for an ext ended period of time. • Wait until a new cartridge is read y to be installed before removing an old ink cartri dge.
If the color of any o f the bars is not uniform, f ollow these step s: 1. If the print er was recently transport ed at a high altitud e, try a printhead cleaning. 2. If the print er was not recently tran sported, try printing another Print Quality D iagnostic report.
Alignment Patterns If the colo r bars and large fon t text look OK, and th e ink cartridges are n ot empty, look a t the alignment pattern directly above the color bars. Example of a good alignment pa ttern The lines are straight. Examples of a bad alignment pattern The lines are jagged - align the printer.
• Power co rd and other cables are w orking, and are firmly connecte d to the device. Make sure th e device i s connecte d firmly to a function ing altern ating current (AC) power outlet, and is turned on. For voltage requ irements, see Electri cal specif ications .
Check the d evice software s ettings Print speed is slower w hen Best or Maximu m dpi is selected as t he print quality. To increase the print spe ed, select different pri nt settings in the device driver. For more information , see Change print settings .
Check the margin settin gs Make sure th e margin settings for the documen t do not excee d the printa ble area of th e device. For more information, see Set minimu m mar gins . Check the color print settings Make sure Print in Gra yscale is not selected in the pri nt driver.
Print troubleshooting Use this section to solve these printing problems: • Envelopes prin t incorrectly • Borderless printing p roduces unexpected resu lts • The product i s not responding • T.
Borderless printi ng produces unexpected res ults Solution: Try print ing the image from the pho to imaging software t hat came with the product. Cause: Printing a borderless image from a non-HP softw are application prod uced unexpected results. The pro duct is n ot respon ding Try the followi ng solutions to resolve the issue .
TIP: You can set t he product as the default pri nter to ensure that the printer is automatically selected when you select Print in the File menu of your di fferent software appli cations. Cause: The pro duct was not the selected printer. If this di d not sol ve the issu e, try the next solu tion.
Solution 7: Clear the paper jam Solution: Clear t he paper jam and remove any torn paper that remai ns in the product. For more information, see: Clear jams Cause: The product had a pape r jam. If this did no t solve the issu e, try the next so lution.
The product prints me aningless characters Try the followin g solutions to resolve the i ssue. Solutions are listed i n order, with the most likely solution fi rst. If the first solution do es not solve the problem, cont inue trying the remaining solut ions until the issue is resolved.
Solution 2: Load paper in the input tray Solution: Load pa per in the input tray. For more information, see: Load media Cause: The product was out of paper. If this did no t solve the issu e, try the next so lution. Solution 3: Selec t the correct printe r Solution: Make sure you have selected the correct printer in your software application .
From your computer, open the printer folder and see if the cancelled job remains in the print queue. Tr y to delete the job from the queue. If the print job rem ains in the queue, tr y one or both of th e following: • Disconnect th e USB cable from the product, restart the computer, and then reconnect the USB ca ble to the product.
If this did no t solve the issu e, try the next so lution. Solution 10: Resta rt the product Solution: Turn of f the product, and then unpl ug the power cord. Plug the power cord back in, and th en press the Power button to t urn on the p roduct. Cause: The product experienced an error.
Solution 2 : Verify the paper size setting Solution: Verify that you ha ve selected the proper paper size sett ing for your project. Make sure that yo u have load ed the correct paper size in the input tray. Cause: The pa per size setting might not have been set correct ly for the project you were printi ng.
Solution 2: Check the lay out of the document Solution: Make sure the layout o f the document you are tr ying to print fits on a pa per size supported b y the product. To previ ew the print layo ut 1. Load the correct pap er size into the input tray. 2.
A blank pa ge came ou t while pr inting Try the followin g solutions to resolve the i ssue. Solutions are listed i n order, with the most likely solution fi rst. If the first solution do es not solve the problem, cont inue trying the remaining solut ions until the issue is resolved.
Solution 5: Load paper in the input tray Solution: If th e product has only a few sheets rem aining, load more paper in the input tray. If the re is plenty of pa per in the input tra y, remove the paper, tap th e stack of paper agai nst a flat surface, and reload the paper into the input tray.
Solution 1: Make sure you are using genuin e HP ink car tridges Solution: Check to see if your ink cartridge s are genuine H P ink cartridges. HP recommends t hat you use genuine HP i nk cartridges. Genuine HP ink cartridges are designed and t ested with HP printers to help yo u easily produce great results, time after time.
For more information, see: Select print me dia Cause: The wrong kind of pap er was loaded in the inpu t tray. If this did no t solve the issu e, try the next so lution. Solution 4: Check the ink levels Solution: Check the estimated ink leve ls in the ink ca rtridges.
Aligning the printer can help ensure excellent print quality. For more information, see: Align the pri nthead Cause: The pri nter needed to be aligned. If this di d not sol ve the issu e, try the next solu tion. Solution 7: Cle a n the printhead Solution: Check the follo wing potential problems, and then clean the printhe ad.
Solution 1: Make sure you are using genuine HP ink cartridges Solution: Check to see if your ink cartridges are genuine HP i nk cartridges. HP recommends that you use genuine HP ink cart ridges. Genuine HP ink cartridges are design ed and tested with H P printers to help yo u easily produce gr eat results, time after time.
Always make sure th e paper you are printing on i s flat. For best results when printing images, use HP Adva nced Photo Paper. Store specialty media in its original packa ging inside a resealable plastic bag on a flat surfa ce in a cool, dry place. When you are ready to pri nt, remove only the paper you plan to use imme diately.
NOTE: For this issue, t here is not a problem with your in k supplies. Therefore, replacing th e ink cartridges or printhead i s not necessary. • Solution 1: Ch eck the paper type • Solution 2: Us.
• Solution 3 : Check the ink le vels • Solution 4: Align the printhead • Solution 5: Clean the printhead • Solution 6: Co ntact HP support Solution 1: Ma ke sure the paper is lo aded corre ctly Solution: Make sure th at the pap er is load ed correctl y in the inp ut tray.
If this did no t solve the issu e, try the next so lution. Solution 5: Clean the pri nthead Solution: Check th e following potenti al problems, and then clean the printhead . After cleaning the printhead, print a pri nt quality report. Evalu ate the print quali ty report to see if the print quality p roblem still exist s.
Solution 2: Ch eck the paper type Solution: HP recommends that you use HP papers or any other paper type tha t is appropriate fo r the product. Always make sure th e paper you are printing on i s flat. For best results when printing images, use HP Adva nced Photo Paper.
Solution 5: Contact HP supp ort Solution: Conta ct HP support for service. Go to: www.hp.com/support . If prompted, choose your country/region , and then click Contact HP for information on callin g for te chnical support. Cause: There was a problem wit h the printhead.
Solution 3: Prin t the image in a smaller size Solution: Reduce the size of t he image and then prin t it. If you are print ing a photo or graphic, and th e print size is set too hi gh, it will be blurry or fuzzy when printed. If a digital photo or rasteriz ed graphic has been resized, it can be blurry or fuzzy when printed.
Solution 1 : Make sur e the paper is loaded corr ectly Solution: Make su re that the paper is loade d correctly in the input t ray. For more information, see: Load media Cause: The paper was not loa ded correctly. If this did no t solve the issu e, try the next so lution.
Solution 2: Wait while the ink dries Solution: Wait at least thirty minu tes for th e ink insi de the prod uct to dry, then try the print jo b again. Cause: The excess i nk in the product needed to dry out . Paper is no t picked up from the input tray Try the followin g solutions to resolve the i ssue.
Solution 4: Clean the rol lers Solution: Clean the rollers. Make sure you have the following ma terials available: • A lint-free cl oth, or any soft material that w ill not come apart or leave fi bers. • Distilled, filtere d, or bottled water (tap wa ter might contain con taminants that can damage the i nk cartridges).
not have time to wait , you can clean the pr inthead, but this uses more ink, and the poor black text may re occur until automatic servicing is a llowed to complete. Cause: Many black print quali ty problems clear up when the automatic services are performed.
The pro duct pri nts slow ly Try the follow ing solutions if the product i s printing very slowly. • Solution 1: Use a lower print quality se tting • Solution 2: Che ck the ink levels • Solution 3: Contact HP support Solution 1: U se a lower print quality setting Solution: Check th e print quality sett ing.
If you receive a n error message about the ink cart ridges, see Errors (Windows) for more information . This section co ntains the followin g topics: • Clean the printh ead • Align the pri nthead Clean the printhea d If your prin ted outpu t is streaked or h as any inc orrect or missing co lors, the printh ead might need t o be cleaned.
To clean the printhead fr om the Toolbox (Mac OS X) 1. Click the HP Devi ce Manager icon i n the Dock. NOTE: If HP Device Manager is not in the Dock, click the Spotlight icon on the right side of the men u bar, type HP Devi ce Manager in the box, and then click the HP Device Manager entry.
To align the printhe ad from the Toolbox (Mac OS X) 1. Click the HP De vice Manager icon in th e Dock. NOTE: If HP Devi ce Manager is not in the Dock, click the Spotlight icon on the right side of the m enu bar, type HP Device Mana ger in the box, and then click the HP Device Mana ger en try.
Media is not coming out correctly • Make sure the output tray extension is ext ended; otherwis e, printed pages may fall off the devic e. • Remove excess media fro m the output tray. There is a l imit to the number of sheet s the tray can hold. Pages are skewing • Make sure the media loaded in the trays is al igned to the paper guide s.
Check the co mputer Make sure the comput er that you are using is connecte d to the network. Check your Web browser Make sure the Web brow ser meets the minimum system req uirements.
◦ Compare the IP address listed in the dialog box and make sure it matches the IP address listed on the netwo rk configuration page. If the IP addresses are differen t, change the I P address in the dialog box to mat ch the address on the network configurat ion page.

To check a wi reless connecti on 1. Make sure that your computer's wireless has bee n turned on. (For more information, see the documenta tion that came with your computer.) 2. If you are not u sing a unique network name (SSID), then it is possibl e that your wireless co mputer could be connected to a nea rby network that is not yours.
Make sure that the H P device is connected to you r network If your device is not connecte d to the same network as your compute r, you will not be able to use the H P device over the network. Follow the steps described in this se ction to find out if yo ur device is actively connected t o the correct netw ork.

6. If an ink cartridg e was sticking up and you were ab le to snap it back down into place, close the ink ca rtridge access door and check if the erro r has gone away. • If the error has go ne away, stop troubleshootin g here. The error has been resol ved.

3. Open the top cover. If there is pape r remaining inside the devi ce, ensure the carriage has moved to the rig ht of the device, free any pape r scraps or wrinkled media, and pull the medi a towards you through th e top of the device. WARNING! Do not reach into the device when it is on and the carriage is stuck.

3. Remove all of the ink cartridges and p lace them on a piece of pa per with the ink opening po inting up. 4. Lift the la tch handle on the print carriage.
6. Clean the print head. There are three are as of the printhead that need to be cle aned: the plastic ramps o n both sides of th e ink nozzles, the edge be tween the nozzles and th e electrical contacts, and t he electrical contact s.

7. Clean the electrical con tacts inside the pro duct. To clean the el ectrical contacts in the product a . Lightly damp en a clean, lint-free cl oth with bottled or distilled wate r. b . Clean the el ectrical contacts in th e pro duct by wiping with the cloth from top to bottom.
9. Carefully lower the latch handle. NOTE: Make sure you lower the l atch handle before rein serting the ink cartridges. Leaving the latch h andle raised can result in incorrectly seated ink cartridges and problems printing. The latch must remain down in order to correctly install the ink cartridges.
