1 Introduction HP Compaq t57x0 thin client m odels use the Microsoft Windows XP Embedded (XPe) operating system. These thin clients provide the flex ibility, connectivity, se curity, mul timedia, an d.
This guide will introduce you to the features of this client that are not found in the standa rd Microsoft Windows XP operating system. Typically, a termin al is configured local ly then used as a tem plate for other terminals, which are then configured using local or remot e administratio n tools.

NOTE: Right-clicking the mouse when the poin ter is on the a dministrator’s desktop background opens a pop-up menu.
Microsoft RDP The Terminal Services Clie nt application on the thin client accesses Mic rosoft Terminal Services. You can make Microsoft RDP avail able on the ne twork using any of th e following serv.
2 Configuration Logging on You can log on to your thin client either auto matically or manually. Automatic logon The default for the XPe-based thin client is automati c logon.
Manual logon When automatic logon i s disabled, thin client sta rtup displays the Log On to Windows dialog box. Type the logon info rmation in the User Name and Password text boxes. Note the following: ● For a user accou nt, the factory-defa ult user name a nd password are bo th User .
Logging off, restarting, and shutting down the thin client To restart, shut down, or log o ff from the t hin client, click Start > Shut Down . From the Shut Down dialog box, select th e desired action, and then click OK . NOTE: You may also log off or shut down using the Windows Security dialog box.
Power management A “Monitor Saver” tu rns off the video signal to the monitor after a desi gnated idle ti me, allowing the monitor to en ter a power-saving mode. Parameters for this mo de are available by right-clickin g on the desktop background and selecting Properties > Screen Saver > Power .
Local drives The following section s describe the lo ca l drives located on the thin client. Drive Z Drive Z is th e onboard vo latile memory (MS-RA MDRIVE) on the logic board of the thin client. Be cause drive Z is volatile memory, HP rec ommends that you do not use this drive to save data that you want to retain.
To keep the m appings after the th in client is reboote d: 1. Disable the write filter cache during th e current boot sess ion or issue the - commit command.
User accounts This section describes how to create a new user account and user profile Creating a new user account CAUTION: Make sure to disable the write filter cache durin g the boot session in which a ne w account is created. Remember to en able the write fil ter af ter saving all of your pe rmanent changes to flash.
For the new user to match the character istics of th e default user, the administrator mu st create the user in the User group and ad d the new user to the Admini strator group. The defaul t user is in both groups; otherwise the new user will not be ab le to add a local printer.
Regional and Language Options The keyboard la nguage options are preset at the factory. Should you need to make a change, the keyboard language selection is mad e through the Regional and Language Op tions selection in the Control Panel. From this program you can select t he type of keyboa rd you are using a s well as the layout/IME settings.
Administrative Tools Click the Administrative Tools icon in the Contro l Panel to gain access to the available administrative tools: 14 Chapter 2 Configuratio n ENWW.
3 Applications The XP Embedded i mage that ships with your thin client has the following preinstalle d applications: ● Sygate Firewall ● Citrix Program Neig hborhood ● Microsoft RDP ● HP PC Se.
Sygate firewall The HP XPe SP2 image i ncludes a Sygate firewall. HP Sygate Security Age nt provides a customiza ble firewall that helps protect your computer fr om intrusion and misu se, whether malicious o r unintent ional.
Microsoft Windows Firewall An improved Microsoft Wind ows Firewall (pre viously kn own as Internet Connection Firewall, or ICF ) is available from HP as an add-on. Th e firewall is en abled by defaul t after yo u install the add-on. NOTE: The Microsoft Windows Firewall is provided only as an add-on and is no t included in the imag e.
NOTE: After you launch t he Windows Firewall ad d-on, t he Control Panel applet i s only available to the Administrator account. ● General Tab : The General tab provides access to th e main three configurat ion options as shown below.
Display a not ification when the Win dows Firewall block s a program is selec ted by defau lt. You can set a scop e for each exception. For home and small office netw orks, it is recommended that you set the scope to the local network only where possible.
Failure symptoms Failures related to the default config uration will manife st in two ways: ● Client applications may fail to receive data from a server. Examples include an FTP client, multimedia streaming softwa re, and new mail notifications in some e-mail applica tions.
Adding a port If adding the pro gram to the exception list do es not resolve the app lication issue, you can add ports manually. You must first ide ntify the ports used by the appli cation. The most reliab le method for determining port usage is consul ti ng with the applicatio n vendor.
Citrix Program Neighborhood Citrix Program Neighborho od is a feature of ICA introduced with MetaFrame 1. 8 that enables use rs to connect to MetaFrame and WinFrame servers and published a pplications.
Remote Desktop Connection Use the Remote Desktop Connection dialog bo x to establish connections to a Win dows Terminal Server or to access remote appl ications using Microsoft RDP. Refer to the Mic rosoft Web sit e for documen tation that of fers a detailed explanation and in structions on how to use the Microsoft RDP d ialog box.
HP PC Session Allocation Manager (SAM) Client The Consolidat ed Client Infrastru cture (CCI) so lution from HP centralizes desktop computing and storage resources in to easily managed, hig hly secu re data cente rs, while providing end users the convenience and fam iliarity of a traditional desktop enviro nment.

TeemNT Terminal Emulation All t57x0 thin-clie nt models include terminal em ulation software to support computing on legacy platforms. The software uses the Telnet protocol to communicate with the co mputing platform.
Altiris Client Agent The Altiris Client Agent a llows the Altiris server to discover valid clients tha t are added to the network. The agent carrie s out assignments a nd reports the sta tus of individual thin clients to the Altiris server. Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 7.
Macromedia Flash Player Macromedia Flash Playe r is the agent for rich Web experien ces across multiple platforms. With Macromedia Flash Playe r, Web users worldwide can view and inte ract with content developed in Macromedia Flash. Some Web sites require newer versions of th e play er.
4 Control Panel extended selections The Control Panel is accessed by selecting Start > Control Panel . Some of the extended selectio ns available on the Con trol Panel are discussed in the following sections.
Enhanced Write Filter Manager The Enhanced Wri te Filter Manage r provides a se cure environment for thin client com puting by protecting the thin client from undesir ed flash memory writes (the operating system and functional software components reside i n flash memory).

HP RAMDisk The RAMDisk is volatile memory space set aside for temporary data storage. It is the Z drive shown in the My Comput er window. The following it ems are stored on the RAMDisk: ● Browser We.
HP DHCP Settings Update Client The HP DHCP Settings Update Client is a utility found in the Control Pane l that allows an IT Administrator to apply settings to an HP XP Embedded operating system. The settings are applied through an .INI file that uses a subset of pa rameters from Micr osoft’s sysprep.
HP ThinState Capture The HP ThinStat e Capture tool is a ve ry simple wi zard-based tool that you can use to capture an HP thin client XP Embedded im age, which you can then deploy to another HP thin cl ient of identi cal model and hardware .
2. Click Next . At this point, attach a disk on key (DOK) to the unit. The DOK drive letter and size are displayed . The DOK must be grea ter in size than the on board flash disk. As a resul t, if your thin client has 512 MB Flash, then the USB flash drive must be 1 GB.
4. Click Yes . The HP T hinState Capture tool formats and makes the USB flas h drive bootable. HP ThinState Capture will now reboot the system. 5. After you perform th ese actions, the HP Th inSt ate Capture tool displays the foll owing screen. Please follow the on -screen instructions.
HP ThinState Deploy To perform an HP ThinState deployment: 1. Set the boot order in t he F10 System BIOS to USB boot . 2. Attach the USB flash drive to the thin c lient unit you wish to deploy the captured image to , and then power on the unit. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions.
5 Administration and image upgrades This section highlights and discus ses the Remote Admini stration capabilities an d firmware upgrade methods applicable to your th in client. Altiris Deployment Solution software The Altiris Deployment Solution software is a full-featured remote admini stration tool set.
HP Compaq Thin Client Imaging Tool The HP Compaq Th in Client Imaging Tool is part of the SoftPaq deliverable that contains th e original factory image fo r the HP Compaq t5000 thin client. You can use this utility to restore the original factory image to your thin client.
6 Peripherals Depending on the ports available , the thin client can provide services for USB, seria l, parallel, and PCI devices, as long as the appropriate sof tware is installed.
