1 Getting started Use this s ection to get familiar w ith camera controls, set up your digital came ra for use, and begin taking pict ures. Camera top and back 8 11 9 10 7 3 2 1 4 5 6 1 Power light.

Choose the lang uage Use to choose the language you w ant, then press . To change the l anguage lat er, use the Ca mera Setup Menu (see “ Using the Camera Setu p Menu” on page 31 ). Set the region Along with the l anguage settin g, the region setting determines th e default dat e format.
Install and for mat an optional memory c ard This camera supports standa rd, high speed, and high capacity Secure Digit al (SD and SDHC) memory cards, 32MB to 8GB. 1. Turn off the camera and open the Ba ttery/ Memory Card door. 2. Insert the m emo ry card in the smaller slot as shown.
Windows: 1. Close all program s and temporarily disable any virus prote ction softwa re. 2. Insert the HP Photosmart Software CD into t he CD drive and follow the on-screen instructions. If the installation screen does not appear, cli ck Start , click Run , type D: Setup.
2 Taking pictures and recording video clips You can take pictures w hen you are in Picture Capture and you can record video when you are in Video Record . Slide to to take pictures or to to record video clips. Th e Image Displa y resembles the following: 1 • Picture Capture indicator.
Recording video clips You can record a video cli p when th e camera is set to Video Reco rd . 1. Slide to . 2. Frame the subjec t in the Image Display.
Focusing on the subjec t When you pre ss the Shutter but ton halfwa y down, the camera searches for focus within the fo cus brackets. When it finds focus, the fo cus brackets turn green. If the focus brackets do not frame your subject, use Focus Lock (see “ Using Focus Lock” on page 11 ).
Using Focus Lo ck Use Focus Lock to focus on a subject that i s not in the center of t he picture, to capture action shots more quickl y by pre-focusing in the area w here the action will occur, or to focus in low light or l ow contrast situat ions. 1.
Optical zoom Optical zoom moves the le ns between wide angle (1x) a nd telephoto (3x). While in Picture Capture or Video Record , use t he buttons on the Zoom lever to control zoom. Press to zoom in and to zoom out. NOTE: You can set the opti cal zoom to the posit ion you want just before recording video cl ips.
3 Setting options for taking pictures and recording video clips Your camera's default se ttings work well f or most shooting situat ions. For some situations, how ever, the featur es described in this cha pter can improve t he pictures you take and the video clips yo u record.
Using the Picture Capture and Video Record menus The Picture Capture and Video Record menus al low you to adjust camera settings that af fect the characteristics of the pictures and video clips you capture.
M540 series: • 6MP Best —For enlarging or printing images greater than 28 x 36 cm (11 by 14 in). • Normal (6MP) (Default)—For printing ima ges u p t o 28 x 36 cm (11 by 14 in). • 4MP —For printing images up to 20 x 25 cm (8 by 10 in) . • 2MP —For printing images up to 13 x 18 cm (5 by 7 in).
TIP: If you want to include yo urself in the picture, pl ace the camera on a tripod o r stable surface, then press the Shutter butt on all the way down. The camera locks focus and exposure just befo re the end of the count down, allowing you t ime to place yourself in th e scene.
4 Reviewing images and video clips You can review and manipula te images and video clips i n Playba ck as described here. For inform ation about enhancing imag es, see “ Using the Design Gallery Menu” on page 21 . 1. Slide to . 2. Use to scroll through your images and video cl ips.
Deleting images To delete a disp layed image duri ng Playback : 1. Press . 2. Use to select an opt ion, then press . • This Imag e —Deletes the image or video clip. • All Except Favori tes —Deletes all i mages except those tagg ed as Favorites .
3. Use t o select an image or video cli p, press , and follow any on-scree n instructions. NOTE: To hear audio a ssociated with video clips, tra nsfer them to your computer (see “ Transferrin g and printing images” on page 23 ). 4. To exit the selecte d Playb ack option, press .
The red-eye removal process take s a few seconds, aft er which the image disp lays with green boxes aroun d corrected area s, along wi th the Remove Red Eyes me nu: • Save Changes (Defaul t)—Saves a copy of the original image w ith the changes and returns to the Playback Menu .
5 Using the Design Gallery Menu M630/M540 seri es: You can use the Design Gallery features to enhance your captured images. 1. While in Playback , use to scroll to an image, then press . 2. Use to highligh t Design Gal lery , then press . 3. Use to highlight an option, then p ress and follow any on-camera i nstructions.
Add Borders allows you to add one or more predef ined borders to the disp layed image. To ad d a border: 1. From the Design Gallery Menu , use to select Add Bor ders , then pres s . 2. Use to select a border type and p review the effect i t has on the imag e.
6 Transferring and printing images Regularly transferring im ages to your computer and delet ing them from the memory card will reduce the time it t akes to turn on your camera, to revi ew images, and to tran sfer images. You can tra nsfer pictures and video clips with or withou t the HP Photosmart Software that came with your camera.
3. Connect the came ra and computer usi ng the USB cable that came wi th your camera. 4. Turn on the camera. When the Image Di splay indicates that the ca mera is connected to the computer, follow the instructions on the co mputer screen. For more inform ation, see the He lp feature in the HP Photos mart Software.
Using a memory card reader You can put your camera’s opti onal memory card i nto a (separately pu rchased) memory card reader. Some computers and HP Photos mart printers have built-in memo ry card slots which act as a memo ry card reader.
4. When the Image Di splay on the camera shows an i mage: • If you want to print one or more images, use to display an imag e you want to print, use to spe cify the number of copies, then press . In the Print Options menu, highlight Print This Image N o w , and press .

Buying prints online You can mark image s you want to ord er as prints. The next time you connect the cam e ra to a computer with the H P Photosmart Soft ware installed, you can order prints of the marked imag es online. 1. While in the Photosmart Express Menu , use to highlight Buy Pr ints Online , then press .
Sending images to online destinations After you have set up onli ne destinations in the camera, you can mark images to be sent to these custom d estinations the next time you connect your camera t o your computer. 1. While in the Photosmart Express Menu , use to highlight Share , th en press .
8 Using the Camera Setup Menu The Came ra Setup Menu allows you to set pref erences for the camera’s behavior. The Came ra Setup Menu is available fro m the Picture Capture , Video Record , and Playback menus. 1. While in the Picture Capture , Video Record , or Playback menu, use to high light Camera Setup.

I have to recharge the Ni MH batteries freque ntly. • New batteries or batte ries that have not been charged recently must be recharg ed to reach full capa city. • If you have not used the batteri es for two months or longe r, recharge them. • For tips on conserving batt ery life, see “ Extendin g battery life” on page 39 .
My image is blurry . •U s e Focus Lock (see “ Usin g Focus Lock” on page 11 ). • Use a tripod to hold the camera steady, or improve lighting conditions. • Use Steady Photo shoot ing mode (see Steady Photo under “ Using the Picture Capture and Vid eo Record menus” on page 14 ).
I have two memory cards that are the same size, but one stores many more pictu res than the othe r. • Your memory card m a y co ntain files tha t are not i mages or vide os recognized by the camera.
The camera gets warm (or even hot) to the touch. This is no rmal. However, if anything se ems out of the ord inary, turn off the c amera and allow the camera to cool. Then exam ine the camera and the b atteries for signs of possible damage. For best image quality, t urn off the camera when not using.
My camera shuts d own unexpect edly. • A power surge or electrostat ic discharge may have affected the ca mera. Remove the batteries and reset the camera (see “ Re setting the camera” on pag e 32 ). Then reinstall the b atteries and turn on the ca mera.

A Managing batteries Your camera uses two AA batteries, either Alka line, Photo Lithium, or rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH). Photo Lithium a nd NiMH batteries provide longer battery life than Alkaline batteries. Top points about batteries • The batteries shipped with your camera ar e AA Alkaline.
• Do not disassemble or modify batteries. • Immediately discontinue use of a battery if, while using, charging, or storing the battery, the battery emits an unusual smell, feels excessively ho t (note that it is normal for the battery to feel warm), changes color or shape, or appears abnormal in any othe r way.
