Component ident ification 6 C ompo nent i dentif icati on UPS R1500 G3 overvi ew The HP UPS R1500 G3 features a 1U rack - mount design and offers power p rotection for loads up t o 1440 VA/1000 W (NA), 1200 V A/900 W (JPN/TWN) or 1500 VA/10 00 W (INTL).

Installation 10 Inst allati on P recautions Save these instructions. This document contains important safety instructions that should be followed during installation, operation, and maintenance of the UPS and batte ries. WARNING: A risk of pers onal injury from electric shock an d hazardous energy lev els exists.
Installation 11 • Circuit overlo ading — Consideration should be given to the connection of the equipment to the supply circuit and the effect that overloading of the ci rcuits might have on overcurrent protection and supply wiring. Appropria te consideration of equipment n ameplate ratings should be used when addressing this concern.
Installation 12 2. Attach the chassis to the rack us ing the supplied screws. 3. (optional) Insert the rear stabilization brackets into the mounting rails and then attach the brackets to the UPS. C onnecting the batteries WARNING: The unit contains seale d lead - acid battery modules.
Installation 13 WARNING: To preve nt personal injury from haz ardous energy: • Remove watc hes, rings, or other met al objects. • Use tools with insulat ed handles.
Installation 14 S electing the UPS vol tage configuration Using a small tool, position the DIP switches accordin g to the desired voltage config uration.
Installation 15 IMPORTANT: Power protector software r equires the communications port to be appropriately cabled to the host computer. CAUTION: Only one communications port can be connected to the host computer. Connecting more than one will r esult in unexpected UPS behav ior.
Installation 16 2. Connect the equipment to the UPS Network Transient Protector OUT jack. Connecting the UPS to utility power WARNING: To prevent injury from ele ctric shock or damage to the equipm ent: • Plug the input line cord into a grounded (earthed) elec trical outlet that is installed near the equipment a nd is easily accessibl e.
Installation 17 C harging the UPS batteries Allow the batteries to charge before putting the UPS into s ervice. IMPORTANT: Charge the batteries for a t least 24 hours before supplying b ackup power to devices.
Installation 18 1. Remove the two screws securing the UPS option slot cover plate, and then re move the cover plate. 2. Install the UPS Network Module along the alignment channels in the option s lot. 3. Secure the UPS N etwork Module using the two scre ws removed in step 1.
Installation 19 4. If the UPS is powe red up, you can be sure th at the UPS Network Modul e is seated properly an d communicating with the UPS by verifying that the UPS Data LED illuminates solid green, and then flashes regularly after 2 minutes.
UPS operations 20 U P S oper ati ons Modes of operati on The UPS has two mo des of operation: • Operate mode (on page 20 ) • Battery mode (on page 20 ) O perate mode In Operate mode: • Power is available at t he UPS receptacles. • The UPS char ges the batteries as nec essary.
UPS operations 21 IMPORTANT: • Although the audible alarm silences, the condition that cau sed the alarm to sound might still e xist. • If a utility power fail ure caused the alarm (or the Genera l Alarm LED illuminates yello w), the alarm silen ces after power is rest ored.
Maintenance 22 Maint enance Removing the UPS front b ezel R eplacing the b atteries To replace th e batteries: 1. Read and ob serve the requirements in " Important batter y safety information (on page 22 )" and " Battery care and storage guid elines (on page 23 ).
Maintenanc e 23 NOTE: Replace all battery modul es at the same time. B attery care and storage guidelines CAUTION: Because of the shor t shelf life of the bat teries, avoid stori ng a battery spare as a backup.
Maintenance 24 4. Remove the battery brac ket. 5. Remove the UPS battery mo dules. IMPORTANT: Do not pull the batter y leads when removing or installing the batteries. To replace th e component, revers e the removal proce dure. IMPORTANT: Charge the batteries for a t least 24 hours before supplying b ackup power to devices.
Maintenance 25 T esting the new battery module After installing the new battery module, press the Test/Alarm Reset button. For information on initiating a self - test, see " Initiating a self - test (on page 20 )." IMPORTANT: The UPS does not exe cute a self - test until the batteries are 90 percent charged.

Maintenance 27 For Windows Serv er, click Start , select Control Panel , and then dou ble - click System . 3. Click the Hardware tab. 4. Click Dev ice Manager . The Device Manager scr een appears. 5. In the tree displayed in the left panel, cl ick the Ports (COM & LPT) branch to expand.
