3 HP All-in-One overview You can access many HP All-in-One function s directly, without turning on yo ur computer. You can quickly and easily a ccomplish tasks such as maki ng a copy or sending a fax from the HP All-in-One. This section describes the HP All -in-One hardware feat ures and control panel f unctions.

To enter text 1. Press the keypad numbers that correspond to the letters of a name. For example, the letters a, b, and c correspond to the number 2, as shown on t he button below.

To enable printer sh aring on a Mac 1. On both the clien t and host computers, do the f ollowing: a . Click System Preferences in the Dock, or, from the Apple menu, choose System Preferences . The System Preference s dialog appears. b .I n t h e Inter net & Network area, click Sharing .

4 Finish setting up the HP All-in- One After you have comple ted the steps in your Setup Poster, refer to this section to help you finish setting up the HP All-in-One. This section contains important setup-related information f or your device, including info rmation on setting preferences.
3. Press or to scroll through t he languages. When the lang uage you want to u se appears, press OK . 4. When prompted, press 1 for Yes or 2 for No . 5. Press or to scroll through t he countries/regions. When the country/region you want to sele ct appears, press OK .
For example, if yo u press Menu in the Co py area and the prompt delay t ime passes before you press another button, the message " Press Menu for se ttings. " appears on the display. To set the prompt delay time 1. Press Setup . 2. Press 7 , then press 3 .
To set re dial option s from the con trol panel 1. Press Setup . 2. Do one of t he following: To change the Busy Redial setting ▲ Press 5 , and then pres s 2 . This selects Advanced Fax Setup and then selects Busy R edial . To change the No Answer Redial setting ▲ Press 5 , and then pres s 3 .
NOTE: If you select Pulse Dialing , some phone system features might not be available. It can also take longer t o dial a fax or phone number . NOTE: This feature is not supp orted in all coun tries/regio ns. If it is not supported in your country/region, Tone or Pulse Dialing doe s not appear in the Basic Fax Setup menu.
TIP: You can also use the Fax Setup Wizar d (Windows) or Fax Setup Utility (Mac) to help you quickly se t up some important fax settings such as the an swer mode and fax header informati on. You can access the Fax Setup Wizard (Windows) or Fax Setup Utility (Mac) through the softwa re you installed with th e HP All-in-One.

Select your fax setup case Now that you have an swered all the questio ns about the equipmen t and services that share the phone l ine with the HP All -in-One, you are ready to cho ose the best setup case for your home or office.

Case A: Separate fax li ne (no voice calls received ) If you have a separa te phone line on whi ch you receive no vo ice calls, and you have no other equipm ent connected on this pho ne line, set up the HP All-in-One as described in this section.

Case C: Set up the HP All-in-One with a PBX ph one system or an ISDN line If you are using either a PBX phone system or an ISDN co nverter/terminal adapter, make sure you do the follow ing: • If you are using either a PBX or an ISDN converter/terminal adaptor, connect the HP All-in-One to the port that is designated fo r fax and phone use.
Case D: Fa x with a distinctiv e ring service on the same line If you subscribe to a distinctive ring servi ce (through your tel ephone company) th at allows you to have multiple phone numbe rs on one phone line, each with a different ring patte rn, set up the HP All-in -One as described in this sect ion.
Case E: Shared voice/fax li ne If you receive both vo ice calls and fax calls at the same phone numbe r, and you have no other off ice equipment (or voice mail) on this phone line, set up the HP All-in-One as described in thi s section.
3. Now you need to d ecide how you want th e HP All-in-One to answe r calls, automaticall y or manually: • If you set up the HP All-in -One to answer calls automatic ally , it an swers all incoming calls and receives fa xes.

Case H: Shared voice/fax line with computer dial-u p modem If you receive bot h voice calls and fax calls a t the same phone n umber, and you also h ave a computer dial-up m odem connected on this phon e line, set up the HP All-in -One as described in thi s section.

6. Now you need to decide ho w you want the HP All-in-One to answ er calls, automatically or manu ally: • If you set up the HP All-in-O ne to answer calls automatically , it answers a ll incoming calls and recei ves faxes.
To set up the HP All-in-O ne with a sh ared voice/fa x line with ans wering mach ine 1. Remove the whit e plug from the port labele d 2-EXT on the back of th e HP All-in-One. 2. Unplug your answeri ng machine from the t elephone wall jack, and connect it to the port labeled 2-EXT on th e back of the HP All-in-One .
There a re two di fferent ways to set th e HP Al l-in-One with your comput er based on the number of pho ne ports on your compu ter. Before you begin, check you r computer to see if it has one or tw o phone ports. • If your computer h as only one phone port, you w ill need to purchase a parall el splitter (also called a couple r), as shown below.
To set up the HP All- in-One on the same phone line as a computer with two pho ne ports 1. Remove the whit e plug from the port labele d 2-EXT on the back of th e HP All-in-One. 2. Find the phone cord that connects from th e back of your computer (your co mputer dial-up modem) t o a telephone wall jack.
Case K: Shared voice/fax line with co mputer dial-up modem and voic e mail If you receive bot h voice calls and fax calls at the sam e phone number, use a compu ter dial-up modem on the same phone line, and sub scribe to a voice mail service through your telephone comp any, set up the HP All-i n-One as described in this secti on.

Change setting s on the HP All-in-One to receive faxes In order to receive faxes su ccessfully, you might need to change some settings on the HP All-in-One. If you are unsure which setting to ch oose for a specific fax o ption, refer to the detailed f ax setup instructions provid ed in the printed d ocumentation.
Equipment/services sharing your fax line Recommended Auto Ans wer setting Description Distinctive ringing service. On The HP All-in-One automatically answers all incoming calls. Make sure the ring pattern the pho ne company set for your fax line matches the Dist inctive Ring setting on the HP All-in-One.
To set the number of rings before answering from the control pan el 1. Press Setup . 2. Press 4 , and then press 3 . This selects Basic Fax Setup and then selects R ings to Answer . 3. Enter the appropriat e number of rings by using the keypad, or press or to change the number of ring s.
• Checks for an active p hone line • Tests the status of you r phone line connection The HP All-in-One prints a report with the result s of the test. If the te st fails, review the report for information on how to fix the problem and rerun the test.
4. In the Fax He ader area, type your company name and f ax number. NOTE: The informatio n you enter in the Personal Information area is used when you send a cover pa ge. This information is not included in the f ax header information. 5. Click Apply or OK .
5. Enter the name, an d then press OK . 6. Press 1 if you want to set up ano ther number, or press 2 if you are finished creating speed dial entries. To create speed dial en tries from th e HP Photosma rt Studio (Mac) Software 1. Select the HP Device Manager from the Dock .
3. In the Fax Spe ed Dial dialog box, choose the speed dial entry that you wa nt to edit, and then click Edit Entry . 4. Make your changes, and then click OK .

5 Load originals and load paper You can load many differen t types and sizes of paper in the HP All-in-One, including letter or A4 paper, p hoto paper, transparenci es, and envelopes.
2. Slide the pap er guides inward u ntil they stop at the left and right edge s of the paper. NOTE: Remove all origin als from the document fee der tray before lifting the lid on the HP All-in-One .

Photo media • Use the Best m ode to print photographs. Note that in this mod e, printing takes l onger and more memory is required from your computer. • Remove each sheet as it pri nts and set it aside to dry. Allowi ng wet media to stack up may cause smea ring.

• Highly textured st ock, such as linen. It might not print evenly, and the ink ca n bleed into these papers. • Extremely smoot h, shiny, or coated papers no t specifically designed for the HP All- in-One. They can jam the HP All-in-One or repel the ink.
To load fu ll-size pa per 1. Remove the out put tray. 2. Slide the paper-wid th guide to its outermost position. 3. Tap a stack of paper on a f lat surface to align the ed ges, and then check the pap er for the foll owing: • Make sure it is free o f rips, dust, wrinkles, an d curled or bent edges.
4. Insert the stack of paper in to the input tray with the sho rt edge forward and the prin t side down. Slide the stack o f paper forward until it stops. CAUTION: Make sure that the HP All-in-One is id le and silent when you load paper into the in put tray.
7. Flip the tray extend er up toward you. NOTE: When you use legal-size paper, leave the t ray extender closed. Load 10 x 15 cm (4 x 6 inch) photo paper You can load 10 x 15 cm (4 x 6 inch) photo paper int o the input tray of the HP Al l-in-One.
4. Slide the paper-wid th guide inward against the photo paper until it stops. Do not overload the inpu t tray; make sure the stack of paper fits wit hin the input tray and is no higher th an the top of the p aper-width guide. 5. Replace the outpu t tray.

6 Print from your computer The HP All-in-On e can be used with any soft ware application t hat allows print ing. You can print a range of pr ojects, such as borderl ess images, newsletters, gree ting cards, iron-on transfers, and posters.
To change the pape r size, orientation, or scaling percentage 1. From the File menu in your soft ware application, ch oose Page Setup . 2. Make sure the HP All-in-One is the selected printer. 3. Make changes to the paper size, orientation , and scaling percentage se ttings, and click OK .
7 Use the copy features The HP All-in-One e nables you to produce high-quality color and bl ack-and-white copies on a variety of paper types, includin g transparencie s.
Set the number of copies You can set the number of copies that you want to print by usi ng the Number of Copies option. To set the number of copies from the con trol panel 1.
To set the paper size from the HP Photosmart Studio (Mac) Software 1. Select the HP Device Manager from the Dock . The HP De vice Manager wind ow appears. 2. In the Tasks area, double-click Make Copies . The HP Copy dialog box appears. 3. From the Paper Size pop-up menu, choose the paper size .
Change copy speed or quality The HP All-in-O ne provides three opti ons that affect copy sp eed and quality: • Best produces the highest qu ality for all paper and eliminates the band ing (striping) effect that sometimes o ccurs in solid areas. Best copies slower than the ot her quality settings.
NOTE: The settings you specify here are only saved on the HP All-i n-One. They do not adjust the set tings in the software. You can save you r most frequently used settings by using the software that you install ed with the HP All-in-O ne. To set default copy setti ngs from the HP P hotosma rt Studio (Mac) Software 1.
3. Press Start Copy Black or Start Copy Color . The HP All-in-One m akes a 10 x 15 cm (4 x 6 inch) borderless copy of your original photo. NOTE: If you loaded tabbed p aper in the photo tray, you can re move the tab from the copy of your ph oto once the ink has completely drie d.
9. Make any other chan ges to the settings you w ant. 10. Click Black Co py or Color Copy . The HP All-in-On e makes a 10 x 15 cm (4 x 6 inch) borderless co py of your origin al photo.
4. Do one of t he following: • If you loaded you r original in the document f eeder tray or on the glass, press until Full Pag e 91% appears. • If you loaded a f ull- or small-size original on t he glass, press until Fit to Page appears. 5. Press Start Copy Black or Start Copy Color .
Copy a legal-size document onto letter paper You can use the Legal > Ltr 72% setti ng to reduce a copy of a legal-size docum ent to a size that f its onto le tter pape r. NOTE: The percentage in the example, Legal > Ltr 72% , might not match the percentage that appea rs in the display.
To adjust t he copy cont rast from the HP Photosmart Studio (Mac) Sof tware 1. Make sure you ha ve paper loaded in the input tray. 2. Load your original pri nt side down on the right front corner of the glass or print side up in the doc ument feeder tray .
• Thin, colored ob jects or lines contai n black sections • Horizontal gr ainy or white bands appear in l ight- to medium-gray areas To copy an overex posed photo 1. Make sure you have pa per loaded in the input tra y. 2. Load your original pho to print side down on the right fro nt corner of the glass.

8 Use the scan features Scanning is the process o f converting text and pictures i nto an electronic format for your computer. You can scan a lmost anything (photos, magazine articles and text docum ents), as long as you are careful not to scratch the glass on the H P All-in-One.
3. Press OK to select the default applicati on to receive the scan, o r press to select a different appl ication, and t hen press OK . A preview image of the scan app ears on your computer, where you can edit it. 4. Make any edits to the p review image, and then cli ck Accept when you are fin ished.
• Change an imag e save destination • Change resolution or image type • Change Te xt Editing/OC R mode • Change the im age preview setti ng Add a new ima ge save destination The software you insta lled with the HP All-in-On e enables you to add n ew applications to the list of possible destin ations for your scans.
9. (Optional) D eselect Automatic mode if you want to manipulate the scanned documen t in the Readiris OCR so ftware before convertin g it to text o r sending it to the text editor appli cation.
Change reso lution or image type You might want t o permanently change the resolut ion or image type of an exi sting destinati on. To change the resolu tion or image type 1. In the HP Photosmart St udio task bar, click Devi ces . The HP De vice Manager wind ow appears.
Change the image p review setting You can set the scan softwa re to automatically send a scan to the default destination without makin g any changes in the HP Scan Pro wind ow. To skip the previ ew 1. Select the HP Device Manager from the Dock . The HP D evice Manager window appears.
9 Use the fax features You can use the HP All -in-One to send and re ceive faxes, including color faxes. You can set up speed dial entries to send f axes quickly and easily to frequent ly used numbers.
NOTE: If you need print ed confirmation that your faxes were successfully sent, enable fax confirmation before sending any faxes. TIP: You can also send a fax manual ly by dialing from a phone or b y using the monitor dial ing feature from the control pan el.
To send a fax using speed d ials from the contro l panel 1. Load your originals prin t side up into the document feeder tray. If you are sendi ng a single-page fax, such a s a photograph, you can also load your original print side down on the glass.
prompts, or other sound s through the handset on your telep hone. This makes it easy for you to use a calling card to send your fax. Depending on ho w the recipient has t heir fax machine set up, t he recipient might answer the phone, or the fa x machine might take the call.
To send a fax using monitor dial ing from the control panel 1. Load your originals prin t side up into the document feeder tray. If you are sendi ng a single-page fax, such a s a photograph, you can also load your original print side down on the glass.
5. Press until Scan & Fax appears, an d then pr ess OK . 6. Press Start Fax Black . NOTE: If you press Start Fax Color , the fax will be se nt in black and whit e and a message appears on t he display. The HP All-in-One scan s the originals into memory and sends the fax when the receiving fax mach ine is available.
Send a fax to mu ltiple recipie nts You can send a fax to mult iple recipients at once by groupi ng individual spee d dial entries into group speed dial ent ries. To send a fax to multiple reci pients from the control panel 1. Load your originals prin t side up into the document feeder tray.
6. Enter the recipi ent information, an d then click Add to Recipients . NOTE: You can also add recipients fro m the Phone Book or from the Address Book . To select a re cipient from th e Address Book , click Open Address Book , and then d rag and drop t he recipient to the Fax Recip ients area.
Send a fax from the co mputer You can load a black-and-wh ite or color document, such as a photo, in th e HP All-in-One, then send it as a fax wit h a cover page by using the HP Phot osmart Studio (Mac) So ftware that came with the HP All-in-On e.
9. If you want to include a cover page, d o the following: a . From the pop-up menu, choose HP Fax Cover Pa ge . The HP Fax Cove r Page dialog box opens. b . From the Print Cover Page area, select whether you want to print the cover page before or after the do cument you are faxing.
To send a compute r-generated cover page as a single-page fax 1. Select the HP Device Manager from the Dock . The HP De vice Manager wind ow appears. 2. In the Tasks menu, doubl e-click Send Fax . The Print dialog box opens. 3. From the Printer pop-up menu, choose t he HP All-in-One (Fax).
The followi ng resolution sett ings are available for sending faxe s: Fine , Very Fine , Photo , and Standard . • Fine : provid es high-qual ity text suitable for faxing mo st documents. This is the default setting. When sendi ng faxes in color, the HP All- in-One always uses the Fine setting.
NOTE: The Ligh ter / Darker setting applies to black an d white faxes on ly, not color faxes. When you exit the Fax menu, this opti on returns to the default setting unl ess you set your changes as the def ault. To change the Lighter / Darker setting from th e contro l panel 1.
increases phone ch arges substantially, and you can accept poorer quality i n exchange for reduced charges. Before turning the ECM settin g off, consider the followin g. If you turn ECM off • The quality and transmission speed of faxes you send and receive are affected.
You can receive faxes manuall y from a phone that is: • Directly connect ed to the HP All-in-One (on th e 2-EXT port) • On the same ph one line, but no t directly connected to the HP All-i n-One To receive a fax m anually 1. Make sure the HP All-i n-One is turned on and you have paper loaded in t he input tray.
condition occurs that prevents the HP A ll-in-One from printing (for example, the HP All-in-One runs out of paper), the HP All-in-One w ill stop answering incoming fax calls.
To delete all the faxes in me mory from the contro l panel ▲ Turn off the HP All-i n-One by pressing the Power butto n. All faxes stored in me mory will be deleted fro m memory when you turn off t he power to the HP All-in-One. NOTE: You can also delete any faxes st ored in me mory by selectin g Clear Fax Log from the Tools menu.
3. Press until On-For ward or On-Print & Forwar d appears, and the n press OK . • Choose On-Forward if you want to forward the fax to anoth er number without printing a backu p copy on the HP All-in-One.
To set the paper size for received faxes from the control panel 1. Press Setup . 2. Press 4 , and then press 4 . This selects Basic Fax Setup and then selects Fa x Paper Size .
To set the junk fax mode 1. Press Setup . 2. Press 4 , and then press 7 . This selects Basic Fa x Setup and then selects Junk Fax Blocker Set Up . 3. Press 4 to select Block Junk Fax . 4. Press to select On or Off , and then press OK . Add numbers to th e junk fax list There are two ways to add a number t o your junk list.

On Fax Send Prints whenever there is a transmission error. On Fax Receive Prints whenever there is a receiving error. Print the fax log The fax log enables yo u to print a log of approxima tely the last 30 fax transact ions. If a fax transaction had an erro r, the error is indicated by an error code in the fax log.
To print r eports fro m the contro l panel 1. Press Setup , and then press 2 . This selects Print Report . 2. Press to select one of the f ollowing, and then pre ss OK . Fax Confirmation Lets you set up fax confirmation reports to print automatically.
To stop faxing from th e control panel ▲ Press Cancel on the control panel to stop a fax you are sending or receiving . If the HP All-in-One does no t stop faxing, press Cancel again. The HP All-in-One pri nts any pages it has already star ted printing and then cancels the remainder of the fax.

10 Maintain the HP All-in-One The HP All-in -One requir es little mainte nance. Sometime s you might want to cl ean the glass and lid backing to re move surface dust and ensure t hat your copies and scans remain clear. You wil l also need to replace, align, or clean your print cartridges from time to time.
To clean the lid back ing 1. Turn off the HP All -in-One, unplug the pow er cord, and raise the lid. NOTE: Depending how long the HP All-in-One i s unplugged, the d ate and time might be erased . You might need to re set the date and time la ter, when you plug the power cord back in.

Work with print cartridges To ensure the best print qu ality from the HP All-in-On e, you will need to perform some simple maintena nce procedures and, when prompted by a message on the display, replace the print cartridges.
NOTE: Handle the pr int cartridges carefully. Dropp ing or jarring cartridges can cau se temporary printing p roblems, or even permanent dama ge. Replace th e print ca rtridges Follow these instructio ns when the ink level is low . NOTE: When the ink level fo r the print cartridge is low, a messag e appears on the display.
3. Wait until the prin t carriage is idle and silent, and then lightly press down on a print cartridge to release it. If you are replacing t he tri-color print cartridge, rem ove the print cartridge from the slot on the lef t. If you are replacing t he black print cartridge, re move the print cartridge from t he slot on the right.
6. Remove the new print cartridge from i ts packaging and, bei ng careful to touch only the black plastic, gently remove the plastic tape by usin g the pink pull tab.
8. Close the print cartri dge door. 9. If you installed a new p rint cartridge, the print cartridge alignment pr ocess begins. 10. Make sure you have plain paper loaded in the i nput tray, and press OK . The HP All-in-One pri nts a print cartridge a lignment sheet.
Use the print cartridge protector In some countries/regio ns, when you purchase a photo print cartridge, you might al so receive a print ca rtridge protector. In o ther countries/regions, a pri nt cartridge protector comes in the box with t he HP All-in-One.
NOTE: If you remove and reinstall the same print cartri dge, the HP All-in-One w ill not prompt you to al ign the print cartridges. The H P All-in-One remembers the alignment values for t hat print cartridge, so you d o not need to realign the pr int cartridges.
4. From the Information an d Settings pop-up menu, choose M aintain Printer . The Select Printer window appears. 5. If the Select Printer dialog box appears, choose the H P All-in-One, and then click Launch Utility . 6. Click Align in the Configuration Settings Panel .
Clean the print cartridge contacts Clean the print cartridge contacts only if you get repeated messages on the display prompting you t o check a print cartridge af ter you already have cle aned or aligned the print cartridges.
7. Clean only the copp er-colored contacts. Allo w the print cartridges t o dry for approximately t en minutes. 1 Copper-colored conta cts 2 Ink nozzles (do not clean) 8. Slide the print cartridge back into th e slot. Push the print cartridge forwar d until it clicks into place.
Make sure you have the f ollowing materials available: • Dry foam rubber swabs, lint-free cloth, or any soft material that will not come ap art or leave fibe rs.
8. Repeat if neces sary for the other print cart ridge. 9. Gently close the print cartri dge door an d plug the p ower cord into the back of the HP All-in-One .

Solution: • Make sure the powe r cord is firmly connected to both the HP All-in-One and t he power adapter. Plug th e power cord into a grounded power outl et, surge protector, or power strip. 1 Power connection 2 Power cord and adapter 3 Grounded power outlet • If you are using a power stri p, make sure the power strip is on.
Communication p roblems over a USB conne ction If the HP All-in-O ne and computer are not communi cating with each other, t ry the following: • Look at the display o n the HP All-in-One. If th e display is blank and the Power button is not lit, the HP All-in-One is turned off.

Information on print cartridges For best results, u se HP print cartridg es. The following tip s help maintain HP pr int cartridges and ensure consisten t print quality.
• Always hold phot o paper by the edges. Fingerprint s on photo paper can reduce print quality. • Do not use paper that i s heavily textured. It can cause graphics or text t o print improperly.
2. Gently pull the paper out of the rollers. CAUTION: If the paper tears when you are removing it from t he rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might be remain ing inside the device. If you do no t remove all the pi eces of paper from the HP All-in-One, more paper jams are likely to occur.
Print cartridge troubleshoo ting If you are experiencing problems wit h printing, you might have a problem wit h one of the print cartridges. To troublesho ot print cartridges 1. Remove the black print cartridg e from the slot on the right. Do not touch the ink nozzles or the copper-colored co ntacts.
• Ink is not fi lling th e text or gra phics comple tely • The text edges are jagged • The printou t has a horizontal band of distortion near th e bottom of the pag e • Colors run into each ot.
TIP: If the automatic do cument feeder does not pick up the plai n paper, try cleaning the fro nt roller. Wipe th e roller with a soft lint-free clot h dampened with distilled water. If the problem pers ists, or the automatic do cument feeder does not pi ck up the plain paper, you can cle an the rollers and separator pad manu ally.
Solution: Check the qu ality setting. Use a hi gher quality setting to increase the amount of ink use d for printing or copying. To change the print sp eed or quality 1. Make sure you have paper loa ded in the input tray. 2. From the File menu in your software ap plication, ch oose Print .
For more information o n paper, see Understand specific ations for supported media . Colors run into each other on th e printout Cause: The print or copy quality setti ng is set too high for the type of paper loaded in the HP All-in-O ne. Solution: Check the quality sett ing.
NOTE: HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability o f non-HP ink. Printer service or repa irs required as a result of printer fail ure or damage attri butable to the use of non -HP ink will not be covered under wa rranty. Cause: The print cartridges need t o be cleaned.
4. Insert the stack of pap er into the input tray wit h the short edge forward and the print side dow n. Slide the stack of pap er forward until it stop s. CAUTION: Make sure that the HP Al l-in-One is idle and si lent when you load paper into the inpu t tray.
7. Flip the tray extende r up toward you. NOTE: When you use legal-size pa per, leave the tray ex tender closed. Cause: The print or copy quality setti ng on the HP All-in-One is set to o low. Solution: Check the qu ality setting. Use a hi gher quality setting to increase the amount of ink use d for printing or copying.

Solution: Check the print cartridg es. If it looks as though there are fibers or dust around the ink nozzles, cle an the ink nozzle area of th e print cartridge.
8. Repeat if nece ssary for the other print cart ridge. 9. Gently close the print cartridge door and plug t he power cord into t he back of the HP All-in-One. Cause: The sending fax machine is having problems. Solution: Ask the sender t o check their fax machine for any pro blems.
3. In the Copy area, press Quality unt il the appropriate quali ty setting is lit . 4. Press Start Copy Black or Start Copy Color . To change the print spe ed or quality 1. Make sure you have paper load ed in the input t ray. 2. From the File menu in your software app lication, choose Print .
Solution: Chang e the Paper Type sett ing to match the type of p aper loaded in the input tray. To set the paper type for copies 1. In the Cop y area, pre ss Men u repeatedly unt il Paper Type appears. 2. Press until the ap propriate paper type appears.

Solution: If you have vertical lines or streaks on the fax, the sender's fax machine might have dirt or dust on the gl ass or automatic document feeder. Check with the sender to see if the gla ss or automatic document fe eder is clean. Cause: The print cartridges need to be cleaned or might be out of in k.
Ink is oversprayi ng the paper when I copy or print a pho to Cause: A small amount (a fe w millimeters) of overspray is common when maki ng a copy of a photo. If there are more than a few millim eters of overspray, it m ight mean the HP All-in-One thin ks the paper loaded is wider t han it actually is.
NOTE: To avoid paper jams, tuck the flaps inside the envelopes. To load envelo pes 1. Remove the out put tray. 2. Remove all p aper from the inp ut tray. 3. Insert one or more en velopes into the far-righ t side of the input tray wit h the envelope flaps u p and on the left.
Solution: If the ink smears whe n printing envelopes, tuck th e flaps inside the envelopes. If the problem pe rsists, remove the black print cartrid ge and print with only the tri-color print cartridge inst alled.

Solution: If the H P All-in-One is not properly con nected to the computer , communication errors can occur. Make sure the USB cable is co nnected to the HP All - in-One and the com puter as shown below.
Solution: Look at the display on t he HP All-in-One. If the display is blank and the light next to the Power button is not lit , the HP All-in-One is turned off. Make sure the power cord is firmly connecte d to the HP All-in-One and plugged int o a power outlet.
3. Select the HP All-in -One, and then select Launc h Utility . 4. Click Print Test Page . A test page is p rinted as long as your connection is set up and working properly. For information on setting up the HP All- in-One, see the Setup Po ster provided with the HP All-in -One.

The HP All-in-One prints a report with the results of the te st. If the test fails, review the report for inform ation on how to fix the problem. To test your fax setup from the control panel 1. Set up the HP All-in-One for faxing according to your partic ular home or office setup instructions.

To send a fax manu ally, the telephone must be connected directly to the port labeled 2-EXT on the H P All-in-One, as shown be low. 1 Telephone wall jack 2 Use the phone cord supplied in th e box with the HP All- in-One 3 Telephone Cause: The Fax Speed setting might be set too fast.
Pages of a fax I sent are missin g Cause: Two or more pages w ere fed through the document f eeder tray at the same time. Solution: Print a Last Transaction report to verify the number of page s that were sent.

If th e problem persists, turn Erro r Correction Mo de (ECM) off and contact your t elephone company. If the proble m persists, ch eck to see if Error Correction Mode (ECM) is On .
Solution: If you are sending a fax from th e glass, make a copy to check the quality of the printout. If the quality of the pri ntout is poor, clean the glas s. To make a copy from the control pan el 1. Make sure you have paper load ed in the input t ray.
Solution: Make a copy t o check the qual ity of the pri ntout. If the p rintout is too light, you can darken it by adjusti ng the Lighter / Darke r setting when se nding the fax. To change the Lighter / Darker setting from the control panel 1. Load your origina ls print side up i nto the document fe eder tray.
Solution: Load your originals in to the document feeder tray. If you are sending a single-page fax, such as a photograph, you can also load your original on the glass. To load an origina l in the document feeder tray 1. Load your original, with the pri nt side up, into the document feede r tray.
3. Close the li d. Fax transm ission is slow Cause: You are sending a fax in color. Solution: Sending a fa x in color can take longer than sending a black-and-white fax. Try sending the fax in black and white. Cause: The document cont ains a lot of graphics o r has very fine detai l.

Cause: Auto Answer is tu rned off, whic h means that the H P All-in-One will not answer incomi ng calls. You must be availab le to respond in person to incoming fax calls, or the H P All-in-One w ill not answer the incoming fax ca ll.
Solution: If you ha ve an answering m achine on the same phone line with the HP All- in-One, do the follo wing: • Disconnect the a nswering machine and then try recei ving a fax. If faxing is successful withou t the answering machine, th e answering machine migh t be causing the problem .

Solution: Set the Fax Speed to Medium or Slow , and then conta ct the sender to have them resend the fax. To set the fax speed from the co ntrol panel 1. Press Setup . 2. Press 5 , and then press 7 . This selects Advanc ed Fax Setup and then selects Fax Speed .
When you have an answering machin e on the same phone line you use for fax cal ls, you must connect the answering mach ine directly to the HP All-in-O ne using the port labeled 2-EXT, as sh own below.
To set the number of rings befo re answering from the control panel 1. Press Setup . 2. Press 4 , and then press 3 . This selects Basic Fax S etup and then selects Rings to A nswer . 3. Enter the appropriate n umber of rings by using the keypad, or press or to change the number of rings.
Solution: If you ha ve a special ring pattern for your fa x phone number (using a distinctive ring service th rough your telephone comp any), make sure that t he Distinctive Rin g feature on the HP All-in-One i s set to match.
• The print ca rtridge door is open. C lose the print ca rtridge door, as show n below: • The print carria ge is stalled. Turn the H P All-in-One off, remove any objects that are blocking the p rint carriage (including any packing materi als), and then turn the HP All-in-O ne on again.
To delete all the faxes in me mo ry from the control panel ▲ Turn off the HP All -in-One by pressing the Power butt on. All faxes stored in memory will be de leted from memory when you turn off the power to the HP A ll-in-One. NOTE: You can also delet e any faxes stored in memo ry by selecting Clear Fax Log from the Tools menu.

Solution: If the image or text on your original fi lls the entire sheet with no ma rgins, use the Fit to Page feat ure to reduce your original and prevent unwante d cropping of the text or images at the edges of the sheet. To resize a document from the control panel 1.
If you want to make a large copy of a small original, scan the original into t he computer, resize the image in the HP Scan Pro software, and th en print a copy of the enlarged image. Cause: The original is placed incorrectly on the gl ass. Solution: Load the orig inal print side down on t he right front corner of the glass as shown below.
To clean the lid backing 1. Turn off the HP All-in-One, unplug the po wer cord, and raise the lid. NOTE: Depending how lon g the HP All-in-One is unpl ugged, the date an d time might be eras ed. You might need to reset the da te and time later, when you plug the power cord back in.
• If you are loading you r original in the documen t feeder tray, plac e the paper, with print side up, in the t ray as shown below. Place t he pages in the tray so that the top of the docu ment goes in first. NOTE: Do not load photos in the documen t feeder tray to copy.
Solution: Use photo pa per to make borderl ess copies. To make a borderless copy of a p hoto from the control panel 1. Load 10 x 15 cm (4 x 6 inch) photo paper in the input tray. 2. Load your original photo print side down on the right front corner of th e glass.
3. Dry the glass with a dry, sof t, lint-free cloth to preven t spotting. 4. Turn on the HP All-in-One. To clean the lid back ing 1. Turn off the HP All -in-One, unplug the power cord , and raise the lid. NOTE: Depending how long the HP All-in-One is unplugged, th e date and time might be e rased.
To resize a document from the control panel 1. Make sure you have paper load ed in the input t ray. 2. Load your original print side down on the right f ront corner of the glass or p rint side up in the documen t feeder tray.
