1 Thank you for purchasing the PENT AX Auto Macro Flash AF160FC. The AF160FC is a flash system for taking close-up photos of small subjects using a flash to eliminate shadows, allowing you to really enjoy photograp hy . This operating manual is intended mainly for digital SLR cameras using the P-TTL auto flash mode.

3 Wa r n i n g The flash contains electronic circuits that operate at high voltages. Do not attempt to disassemb le the flash unit yourself, as there is danger of an electric shock. If internal parts of the flash unit become exposed d ue to impact, etc.

14 1 Slide the batte ry chamber cover as shown in the figure and remove it. 2 Insert the above four AA batteries sequentiall y from lower one making sure the plus/minus markings +, - match the diagram inside the battery chamber and close the batte ry chamber cover.
15 ■ About battery types ● Compatible batteries Use four of the sa me type of battery. • AA alkaline batteries (LR6) • AA lithium batteries (FR6) • AA Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) batteries ● Non-compatible batter ies The following batteri es cannot be used i n the flash unit.
16 • If you di scharge the flash unit repeatedly whe n using lithium batteries, the batteries will ov erheat and activate a safety circuit that temporarily disables the flash unit. If this occurs, wait until the ba tteries cool down b efore using the flash un it again.
17 Insert the batteries and then do a test flash. ■ How to check the charge Insert the batteries and then turn on the power. The READY lamp will light up when th e flash is charged. ■ How to test the flash unit When the READY lamp lights, press the READY lamp/TEST button.
18 Attach the lens you are going to use b efore mounting the macro flash. There are three steps for mounting the flash unit. 1 Attach the controller to the camera. 2 Attach the adapter to the lens that is on the camera. 3 Attach the flash head to the adapter This section explains them in order.
19 2 Turn the locking lever of the controller awa y from [FIX ➝ ]. Loosen it so the flash shoe mounts easi ly. 3 Slide the flash shoe of the cont roller i nto the came ra's hot flash shoe from the back of the camera. Insert it all the way until it stops.
20 ■ Attach the adapter to the lens that is on the camera. ● Types of adapters The adapters that can be used vary depending on the type of lens. There are two types of adapters provided.
21 This section explains how to mount these types of adapters. ● Mounting procedur e A: Adapter ring Screw the adapter ring that is the same size as the lens onto the front thread of the le ns. B: Macro adapter 1 Line up the ma cro adapte r wi th the bayonet (hood mo unt) on the lens front, and push the adap ter straight on.
22 ■ Attach the flash head to the adapter Press the release buttons on the flash head to insert the four mounting tabs (circle d in the abo ve diagra m) on the inside of the flash head correctly into the groove on the adapter ring (A) or macro adapter (B).
23 The flash unit has two modes for adjusting th e amount of light produced by the flash: An automatic mo de and a manual mode. Use the mode dial to set the outp u t of the flash. The mode dial has seven positio ns. For the auto flash mode there are "-0.
24 ■ Auto flash modes The AF160FC has two auto flash mo des. The flash unit communicates with the camera and automatically selects a mode. P-TTL auto and TTL auto switch automaticall y depending on the camera and lens settings. The table on the following pa ge shows the modes used by different types of cameras.

26 ■ Procedure Set the camera to a mode other than manua l. 1 Turn the flash on. 2 Set the flash mode dial to "AU TO". 3 If the lens has an aperture ring, se t it to A. * For DA, DA L and FAJ lense s, which do not have aperture rings, skip to step 4.
27 For cameras that are compat ible with both P-TTL auto and TTL auto ( , and ), pictures can b e taken using TTL auto when the aperture on the lens is not set to A. However, if the aperture is set to anything other than A with cameras that are only com patible with P-TTL, full flash output is used.
28 Effective when you want a speci fic flash output regardl ess of the subject conditions. Determine the flash output from the exposure and test pictures.
29 ■ Conditions of the subject cha nge exposure values The exposure requirements change acco rding to the condition of the lighting and the subj ect. Ta ke test shots to determine th e exposure. Taking test shots is e ssential to proper use of manual flash mode.
30 You can change th e ratio of the am ount of flash o utput from the left or right flash lamp by using the flash head output switch on the flash head. It is also possible to rotate the flash unit while it is on the lens to adjust the flas h output verticall y.
31 The modeling light can be used to grasp roughly wh ere shadows may appear when using the fl ash or to check the subjects by sight i n the dark. Press the MODELING butt on on the controller t o turn the modeling light on the flash head on and off. The brightness on the right or left depends on the flash head output switch setting.
