1 - 1 1 Getting Star ted About This Manual This User’ s Guide provides installati on and programming instructions f or the Xenon™ 1500 area-imaging scanner . Pr oduct specifications, dimensions, w ar- ranty , and customer suppor t information are also included.
1 - 2 Connecting the Device with USB The scanner can be connected to the USB por t of a computer . Connect the appropriate interface cab le to the de vice first, then to the computer . Reading T echniques The scanner has a view finder that projects a bright red aiming beam that corre- sponds to the scanner’ s hor izontal fiel d of vie w .
1 - 3 The aiming beam is smaller when the scanner is closer to the code and larger when it is f ar ther from the code. Symbol ogies with smaller bars or elements (mil size) should be read closer to the unit . Symbologies with larger bars or ele- ments (mil size) should be read f ar t her from the unit.
1 - 4 entire sequence will be sav ed to your custom def aults. When y ou have entered all the commands you w a nt to sav e for y our custom def aults, scan the Save Custom Defaults bar code. Y ou ma y hav e a ser ies of custom settings and want to correct a single setting.
1 - 5 Resetting the F actory Defaults If you aren’t sure what prog ramming opti ons are in your scanner , or you’ve changed some options and w ant to restore the scanner to f actor y default set- tings, first scan the Remo ve Custom Defaults bar code, then scan Activ ate Defaults .

2 - 1 2 Pr ogramming the Interface Intr oduction This chapter describes how to program y our system for the desired interf ace. Pr ogramming the Interface - Plug and Pla y Note: After you scan one of the codes, power cycle the host terminal to have the interface in effect.

2 - 10 Ke yboard Country (continued) Keyb o a rd S t yl e This programs k eyboard styles, such as Caps Loc k and Shift Lock. If y ou have used Keyboard Conversion settings, the y will override any of the f ollowing K ey- board Style settings. Def ault = Regular .
2 - 11 Regular is used when you normally hav e the Caps Lock k ey off . Caps Lock is used when you normally hav e the Caps Lock key on. Shift Lock is used when you normally hav e the Shift Lock ke y on (not common to U .S. ke yboards). A utomatic Caps Lock is used if y ou change the Caps Lock ke y on and off .
2 - 12 Ke yboard Con version Alphabetic ke yboard characters can be forc ed to be all upper case or all lo wer- case. So if y ou hav e the follo wing bar code: “abc569GK, ” you can mak e the output “ABC569GK” by scanning Con vert All Characters to Upper Case , or to “abc569gk” by scanning Con ver t All Characters to Lower Case .
2 - 13 Control + ASCII Mode On: The scanner sends ke y combinations for ASCII control characters f or values 00-1F . Windo ws is the preferred mode. All k ey- board countr y codes are suppor ted. DOS mode is a legacy mode, and it does not suppor t all ke yboard countr y codes .
2 - 14 Numeric Ke ypad Mode: Sends numeric characters as if entered from a numeric ke ypad. Def ault = Off. Numeric Keypad Mode On * Numeric Keypad Mode Off.
3 - 1 3 Input/Output Settings P ower Up Beeper The scanner can be programmed to beep when it’ s powered up . Scan the Off bar code(s) if you don’t w ant a power up beep . Def ault = P ower Up Beeper On - Scanner . Beep on BEL Character Y ou ma y wish to f orce the scanner to beep upon a command sent from the host.
3 - 2 Good Read and Err or Indicators Beeper – Good Read The beeper ma y be programmed On or Off in response to a good read. T ur ning this option off, only turns o ff the beeper response to a good read indication. All error and me nu beeps are still audible .
3 - 3 Beeper Pitch – Good Read The beeper pitch codes modify the pitc h (frequency) of the beep the scan- ner emits on a good read. Def ault = Medium. Beeper Pitch – Err or The beeper pitch codes modify the pi tch (frequency) of the sound the scan- ner emits when there is a bad read or error .
3 - 4 LED – Good Read The LED indicator can be programmed On or Off in response to a good read. Def ault = On. Number of Beeps – Good Read The number of beeps of a good read can be progr ammed from 1 - 9. The same number of beeps will be applied to the beep er and LED in response to a good read.
3 - 5 Good Read Delay This sets the minimum amount of time bef ore the scanner can read another bar code. Def ault = 0 ms (No Dela y). User -Specified Good Read Delay If you w ant to set your own leng.
3 - 6 Read Time-Out Use this selection to set a time-out (i n milliseconds) of the scanner’ s trigger when using serial commands to tr igge r the scanner . Once the scanner has timed out, you can activ ate the scanner either by pressing the trigger or using a serial tr igger command.
3 - 7 Presentation Sensitivity Presentation Sensitivity is a numeric range that increases or decreases the scanner's reaction time to bar code pr esentation. T o set the sensitivity , scan the Sensitivity bar code, then scan the deg ree of sensitivity (from 0- 20) from the inside back co ver , and Save .
3 - 8 In the e xample below , the white box is the centering window . The centering window has been set to 20% left, 30 % right, 8% top , and 25% bottom. Since Bar Code 1 passes through the cent ering window , it will be read. Bar Code 2 does not pass through the center ing window , so it will not be read.
3 - 9 Scan Presentation Centering On , then scan one of the f ollowing bar codes to change the top , bottom, left, or right of the centering window . Then scan the percent you w ant to shift the centering window using digits on the inside back co ver of this manu al.
3 - 10 Hands Free Time-Out The Presentation Modes are ref erred to as “hands free” modes. If the scanner’ s trigger is pulled when usin g a hands free mode, the sc anner changes to manual trigger mode. Y ou can set the time the scanner should remain in manual trigger mode by setting the Hands F r ee Time-Out.
3 - 11 User -Specified Reread Dela y If you w ant to set your own length f or th e reread delay , scan the bar code below , then set the dela y (from 0-30,000 millisec onds) by scanning digits from the inside back co ver , then scanning Save .
3 - 12 User-Specified Aimer Dela y If you w ant to set your own length f or the duration of the delay , scan the bar code below , then set the time-out by sc anning digits (0 - 4,000 ms) from the Programming Chart inside the back co ver of this man ual, then scan Save .
3 - 13 multiple codes are spaced closely toget her . Using the Aimer Delay and Center- ing f eatures, the scanner can emulate the oper ation of older systems, such as linear laser bar code scanners.) Note: To adjust centering when the scanner is in the stand, see Presentation Centering (page 3-7).
3 - 14 Scan Centering On , then scan one of the f oll owing bar codes to change the top , bottom, left, or r ight of the cent ering window . Then scan the percent you want to shift the centering window using digits on the inside bac k cov er of this manual.
3 - 15 Video Rever se Video Re verse is used to allo w the scanner to read bar codes that are inverted. The Video Rever se Off bar code below is an exampl e of this type of bar code. Scan Video Rever se Only to read only inv er ted bar codes. Scan Video Reverse and Standar d Bar Codes to read both types of codes.
3 - 16 Def ault = Upright. * Upright Upside Down Vertical, Top to Bottom Vertical, Bottom to Top.
4 - 1 4 Data Editing Prefix/Suffix Overview When a bar code is scanned, additional in fo rm ation is sent to the host computer along with the bar code data. This gr oup of bar code data and additional, user-defined data is called a “message stri ng.
4 - 2 symbology to which you want to apply the prefix or suffix. For example, for Code 128, Code ID is “j” and Hex ID is “6A”. Step 3. Scan the 2 hex digits from the Programming Chart inside the back cover of this manual or scan 9 , 9 for all symbologies.
4 - 3 Step 1. Scan the Clear One Prefix or Clear One Suffix symbol. Step 2. Determine the 2 digit Hex val ue from the Symbology Chart (included in the Symbology Chart, beginning on page A-1) for the symbology from which you want to clear the prefix or suffix.
4 - 4 Suffix Selections Function Code T ransmit When this selection is enabled and f unction codes are contained within the scanned data, the scanner transmits the func tion code to the terminal. Char ts of these function c odes are provided in Supported Interface Keys star ting on page 7-3 .
4 - 5 Inter character Dela y An intercharacter dela y of up to 500 0 milliseconds (in 5ms increments) may be placed between the transmission of each char acter of scanned data.
4 - 6 Interfunction Dela y An interfunction dela y of up to 5000 milliseconds (in 5ms increments) may be placed between the transmission of each segment of the message string. Scan the Interfunction Delay bar code below , then scan the num- ber of 5ms dela ys, and the Save bar code using the Programming Chart inside the back co ver of this manual.
5 - 1 5 Data Formatting Data Format Editor Intr oduction Y ou ma y use the Data F ormat Editor to change the scanner’s output. F or exam- ple, y ou can use the Data F ormat Editor to inser t characters at cer tain points in bar code data as it is scanned.
5 - 2 you are programming. (See Primary/Alternate Data Formats on page 5-8 for further information.) Step 3. Terminal Type Refer to Terminal ID Table (page 5-4) and loca te the Terminal ID number for your PC. Scan three nu meric bar codes on the inside back cover to program the scanner for y our terminal ID (you must enter 3 digits).
5 - 3 Other Pr ogramming Selections Clear One Data Format This deletes one data format for one symbology. If you are clearing the primary format, scan 0 from the Programming Chart inside the back cover of this manual. If you are cl earing an alternate format, scan 1 , 2 , or 3 , depending on the format you are cl earing.
5 - 4 Data Format Editor Commands Send Commands Send all character s F1 Include in the output message all of the characters from the input message, starting from current cursor position, followed by an insert character. Syntax = F1xx where xx stands for the insert character’s hex value for its ASCII code.
5 - 5 Send all but the last c haracters E9 Include in the output message all bu t the last “nn” characters, starting from the current cursor position.
5 - 6 Sea rch backw ard for a cha rac te r F9 Search the input message backward for “xx” character from the current cursor position, leaving the cursor pointing to the “xx” character. Syntax = F9xx where xx stands for the search character’s hex value for its ASCII code.
5 - 7 Stop replacing character s E5 Terminates character replacement. Syntax = E5. Compare character s FE Compare the character in the curren t cursor position to the character “xx.” If characters are equal, move the cursor forward one position. Syntax = FExx where xx stands for the comparison character’s hex value for its ASCII code.
5 - 8 Def ault = Data Fo r matter On, Not Required. Primary/Alternate Data Formats Y ou can sav e up to four data f or mats, a nd s witch between these formats. Y our primar y data format is sav ed under 0 . Y our other three formats are sav ed under 1 , 2 , and 3 .
6 - 1 6 Symbologies This programming section contains the f ollowing menu selections. Ref er to Chapter 9 f or settings and def aults. • All Symbologies • GS1-128 • Aztec Code • Interleaved 2 .
6 - 2 All Symbologies If you w ant to decode all the symbologi es allowab le for y our scanner , scan the All Symbologies On code. If on the other hand, y ou want to decode only a par ticular symbology , scan All Symbologies Off follo wed b y the On symbol f or that par ticular symbology .
6 - 3 Codabar <Default All Codabar Settings> Codabar On/Off Codabar Start / Stop Characters Star t/Stop characters identify the leadi ng and trailing ends of the bar code. Y ou ma y either transmit, or not tr ansmit Star t/Stop characters. Def ault = Don’t T ransmit .
6 - 4 When Check Character is set to V alidate, but Don’t T ransmit , the unit will only read Codabar ba r codes printed with a check char acter , but will not transmit the chec k character with the scanned data. Codabar Concatenation Codabar suppor ts symbol concatenati on.
6 - 5 Codabar Message Length Scan the bar codes below to chang e the message length. Ref er to Message Length Description (page 6-2) f or addition al info r mation.
6 - 6 Code 39 < Default All Code 39 Settings > Code 39 On/Off Code 39 Star t / Stop Characters Star t/Stop characters identify the leadin g and trailing ends of the bar code . Y ou ma y either transmit, or not tr ansmit Star t/Stop characters. Def ault = Don’t T ransmit.
6 - 7 When Check Char acter is set to V alidate and T ransmit , the scanner only reads Code 39 bar codes printed with a check character , and will transmit this character at the end of the scanned data. Def ault = No Check Char ac- ter . Code 39 Message Length Scan the bar codes below to chang e the message length.
6 - 8 acter(s), it buff ers Code 39 bar codes until it reads a Code 39 bar code that does not hav e the append tr igger . The da ta is then transmitted in the order in which the bar codes were read (FIFO).
6 - 9 Character pairs /M and /N decode as a minus sign and period respectively . Character pairs /P through /Y decode as 0 through 9. Code 39 Code P age Code pages define the mapping of character codes to characters .
6 - 10 Interleaved 2 of 5 < Default All Interleaved 2 of 5 Settings > Interleaved 2 of 5 On/Off Check Digit No Check Digit indicates that the scanner reads and transmits bar code data with or without a check digit.
6 - 11 Interleaved 2 of 5 Messa ge Length Scan the bar codes below to chang e the message length. Ref er to Message Length Description (page 6-2) f or addition al info r mation. Mini- mum and Maximum lengths = 2-80. Minim um Default = 4, Maxim um Def ault = 80.
6 - 12 When Check Digit is set to V alidate and T ransmit , the scanner only reads NEC 2 of 5 bar codes printed with a chec k digit, and will transmit this digit at the end of the scanned data. Def ault = No Check Digit. NEC 2 of 5 Message Length Scan the bar codes below to change the message length.

6 - 22 UPC-A Addenda This selection adds 2 or 5 digits to the end of all scanned UPC-A data. Def ault = Off fo r both 2 Di git and 5 Digit Addenda. UPC-A Addenda Required When Required is scanned, the scanner wi ll only read UPC-A bar codes that hav e addenda.
6 - 23 UPC-A/EAN-13 with Extended Coupon Code Use the f ollowing codes to enab le or disable UPC-A and EAN-13 with Extended Coupon Code. When left on the def ault setting ( Off ), the scanner treats Cou- pon Codes and Extended Coupon Co des as single bar codes.
6 - 24 UPC-E0 <Default All UPC-E Settings> UPC-E0 On/Off Most U .P .C. bar codes lead with th e 0 number system. T o read these codes, use the UPC-E0 On selection. If y ou need to read codes that lead with the 1 number system, use UPC-E1 (page 6-27).
6 - 25 UPC-E0 Addenda Required When Required is scanned, the scanner will only read UPC-E bar codes that hav e addenda. Def ault = Not Required. UPC-E0 Addenda Separator When this f eature is On , there is a space between the data from the bar code and the data from the addenda.
6 - 26 UPC-E0 Number System The numeric system digit of a U .P .C . symbol is nor mally transmitted at the beginning of the scanned data, but the unit can be prog rammed so it will not transmit it. T o pr ev ent transmission, scan Off . Def ault = On.
6 - 27 UPC-E1 Most U .P .C. bar codes lead with the 0 number system. F or these codes, use UPC-E0 (page 6-24). If you need to read codes that lead with the 1 n umber system, use the UPC-E1 On selection.
6 - 28 EAN/JA N-13 Addenda This selection adds 2 or 5 digits to the end of all scanned EAN/JAN-13 data. Def ault = Off f or both 2 Digit and 5 Digit Addenda. EAN/JA N-13 Addenda Required When Required is scanned, the scanner wi ll only read EAN/JAN-13 bar codes that hav e addenda.
6 - 29 EAN/JAN-13 Ad denda Separator When this f eature is On , there is a space between the data from the bar code and the data from the addenda. When tur ned Off , there is no space. Def ault = On. Note: If you want to enable or disabl e EAN13 with Exten ded Coupon Code, refer to UPC-A/EAN-13 with Extended Coupon Code (page 6-23).
6 - 30 EAN/J AN-8 <Default All EAN/JAN-8 Settings> EAN/JA N-8 On/Off EAN/JA N-8 Check Digit This selection allows y ou to specif y whether the check digit should be transmitted at the end of the scanned data or not.
6 - 31 EAN/JAN-8 Ad denda This selection adds 2 or 5 digits to the end of all scanned EAN/JAN-8 data. Def ault = Off f or both 2 Digit and 5 Digit Addenda. EAN/JAN-8 Ad denda Required When Required is scanned, the scanner will only read EAN/JAN-8 bar codes that hav e addenda.
6 - 32 MSI <Default All MSI Settings> MSI On/Off MSI Chec k Character Diff erent types of check char acters are used with MSI bar codes. Y ou can program the scanner to read MSI bar codes with T ype 10 check charac- ters. Def ault = V a lidate T ype 10, but Don’t T ransmit.
6 - 33 When Check Char acter is set to V alidate T ype 10/11, but Don’t T ransmit , the unit will only read MSI bar codes printed with the specified type check character(s), b ut will not transmit th e check char acter(s) with the scanned data. MSI Message Length Scan the bar codes below to chang e the message length.
