1 I NTRODUCTION Product Overvie w The MS4980 is a high perform ance area imaging bar co de scanner packed into a small yet rugged form factor. The scanner features a high-r esolution CMOS imaging sensor to deliver exc ellent omnidirect ional 1D, PDF417 and 2D bar code scan performance, optical character recogni tion (OCR) and image capture.

4 I NTRODUCTION Cable Installation Important: If the cable is not fu lly attached, the unit may power intermittently. Figure 2. Cable Installation 1. Insert the 15-pin D-type connecto r end of the cable into the s ocket on the MS4980. 2. Rotate the two screws clockwise to tighten.
5 I NTRODUCTION Labels Every scanner has a label located on th e underside of the unit. The label contains important information such as the unit’s date of manufacture, serial number, CE and caution information. Fi gure 4 provid es an example of the label.
6 I NSTALLATION RS232 1. Turn off the host device. 2. Plug the 15-pin socket end of the cable into the 15-pin D- Type connector on the MS4980 (see page 4). 3. Connect the 9-pin D-type connector of the communication cable to the proper COM port of the host device.
7 I NSTALLATION Keyboard Wedge 1. Turn off the host device. 2. Plug the 15-pin socket end of the cable into the 15-pin D-T ype connector on the MS4980 (see pag e 4). 3. Disconnect the keyboard from the host device. 4. Connect the “Y” ends of the communication cable to the keyb oard and keyboard port on the hos t device.
8 I NSTALLATION USB (Powered by the Host Dev ice) 1. Turn off the host device. 2. Plug the 15-pin socket end of the USB cable into the 15-pin D-Type connector on the MS4980 (see page 4). 3. Plug the USB end of the cable into the host’s USB port. 4. Turn on the host device.
9 I NSTALLATION USB (Powered by External Power Supply) 1. Turn off the host device. 2. Plug the 15-pin socket end of the cable into the 15-pin D- Type connector on the MS4980 (see page 4). 3. Plug the USB end of the cable into the host’s USB port. 4.
10 M OUNTING S PECIFICATIONS The MS4980 has three M3 x 0.5 mm threaded ins erts on the bottom of the scanner for mounting with screws. Figure 10..
11 M ODES OF O PERATION The MS4980 supports two standard mod es of operation for scanning bar c odes, automatic activation and manual activ ation scanning. Scanning while in the automatic activation mode can occur in either one of t wo configurable options, pass-through or presentation.
12 M ODES OF O PERATION Manual Activ ation • Decodes ALL 1D, PDF and 2D matrix codes • Scanning Method: 1. Press the button one time to activate linear targeting.
13 I NDICATORS Audible When the MS4980 is in operation, it pr ovid es audible feedback. T hese sounds indicate the status of the scanner. Eight settings are availab le for the tone of the beep (normal, six alternate tones and no to n e).
14 I NDICATORS Visual The scanner has blue and white LED indicators on either side of the button on the top of the unit. When the scanner is on, the intensity of the LED and the flashi ng or stationary activity of the LEDs, indic ates the status of the current scan and the diagnostic scanner.
15 I NDICATORS Failure Modes Long Razzberry Tone – During Power Up Failed to initialize or configure the sc anner. If the scanner does not respond after reconfiguration, return the scanner for repair. Short Razzberry Tone – During Scanning An Invalid bar code has been scanne d when in configuratio n mode.
