13 Installat ion Quick Inst alla tio n Ou tline The following is a quick preview of the steps required for f irst time installations. Each item is discu ssed in detail later in this section. Determine clearance, ventilation and service access requiremen ts.
14 Service A ccess W hen routing and installing the cable(s) and power supply, make sure to leav e access that these components may be swapped easily without the need to remo ve the unit from the chec kout counter .

33 Audible Indicator s W hen in operation th e MS2420 scan ner provide s audible feedback that indi cates the status of the unit and the current scan. Eight settings are av ailable for the tone o f the beep (normal, six alternate tones and no tone) plus thr ee volume settings.
34 Visua l Ind icato rs The blue LED is located near the bottom cor ner of the vert ical output window on the M S2420 . W hen the scann er is ON , the flashing or constant, illumination of the LEDs i ndicates the status of the scanner and the current scan.
35 Fail ure Modes One Razz berry Tone This indicates that the scanner has ex perienced a laser subsystem failure. The scanner wil l try up to thr ee times to correct the failure condition.

37 Diagnostic Indicator Displ ay Error Code Description 09 COPROCES SOR COMMUNICAT ION ERRO R – Th e main microprocessor is not communicating with the interface coprocessor. The inter face coprocessor may be in a fault condition with the host or just not able to respon d.
38 Diagnostic Indicator Displ ay Error Code Description 25 LASER #2 (RIG HT HORIZONT AL) HIGH CURRENT W ARNING – The laser in the vertical scanning subsystem is drawi ng excessive current. This could be a w arning for a future total failure. Have the unit checked at an authorized service center w hen convenient.
39 Power Save Modes Th e MS 2 4 20 has f ive config urable power save m odes. Refer to the M etroSelect Con figuration Guide f or additional information on Power Sav e Modes. 1. Blink Power Save M ode: Blinks the laser OFF & O N after a conf ig ur ed period of non - use.
40 Beeper O ptions and Button Funct ions Changing the Beepe r Tone Beeper tones may be conf ig ur ed incrementally using the follow ing bar code. The new tone will be heard followed by a short pause. Two more new tones will be heard signi fying the new setting has been stored in memory.

42 Startup W hen the scanner first receives power, the blue LED w ill turn on and the scanner will beep once . The scanner is now ready to scan. Power- Up Test Mode W hen a MS2420 scanner is first powered up, it cycles throu gh a number of sel f - tests before starting normal operation.
43 Scale Opera ti on Scal e Zeroing After the unit has been o fficially calibrated (see page 44) the scale can be re - zeroed by pressing the scale zeroing button on either the unit o r on the remote display stand. W he n t he s cal e i s at zer o t he amber LED will be illuminated.
44 Cali bration The scanner/scale must be calibrated i f: it is a fir st time insta llation the scale cannot be re - z eroed the calibration verification tests indicate errors there is a c hange in the units of measure [i. e. from pounds (lbs.

50 Bar Code Ca libration Pr ocedur e without Remote Display The following calibration procedure can be used w hen the remote scale display i s not prese nt. This procedure requires that the scanner/scale have a s oftware serial number o f 15001, or greater.
51 Bar Code Ca libration Pr ocedur e without Remote Display 4. Enter the scale pro gram mode. Power down the unit and slide the scale p rogram swi tch to the program position. If the system is a dual cable system, disconnect the host to scale RS232 cable from the unit.
52 Bar Code Ca libration Pr ocedur e without Remote Display 7. Make sure there is no l oad on the s cale platter. The blu e LED w ill be used to indicate the cu rrent step in the calibration process. 8. Calibrate a zero load. The blue LED w ill blink once periodically.

W ai t for scale stability, and then press the beeper v olume switch once. The beeper will beep 4 times indicating that the Cal 4 v alue has been stored.

60 Dail y Maintenanc e Smudges and dirt on the unit’s w indow can interfere wi th the unit’s performance. If the horizontal or vertical output windows require cleaning, use only a mild glass cleaner containing no ammonia.
61 T roubleshoo ting The following guide is for re ference purposes only. Contact a customer se rvice representative to preserve the limited warranty terms. Symptom Possible Cause(s) Solution All Interfaces No LEDs, beep or moto r spin. No power is being s upplied to the scanner.
62 Symptom Possible Cause(s) Solution All Interfaces The unit scans a bar co de, but locks up a fter the first scan (the blue LED stays on). The scanner is configured to support some form of host handshaking but is not receiving the signal.
63 Symptom Possible Cause(s) Solution RS232 Only The unit powers up OK and scans OK but does not communicate properly to t he host. The com port at the host is not working or is not configured properly. Check to make sure that the baud rate and parity of the scanner and the com munication port match and th e pr og ram is loo king f or RS232 data.
