5 IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION Operator Responsibility Pump Operati on Refuel With Care PUMP SAFETY Most accidents can be prevented if you follow all instructions in this manual and on the pump. The most common hazards are discussed below, along with the best way to protect yourself and others.
6 PUMP SAFETY Hot Exhaust Carbon Monoxide Hazard The muffler becomes very hot during operation and rem ains hot for a while after stopping the engine. Be careful not to touch the muffler while it is hot. Let the engine cool before transporting the pump or storing it indoors.

9 CONTROLS CONTROLS Ignition Switch Choke Lever O O F F F F C C L L O O S S E E D D O O P P E E N N O O N N IGNITION SWITCH CHOKE LEVER The ignition switch controls the ignition system. The ignition switch must be in the ON position for the engine to run.

11 BEFORE OPERAT ION ARE YOU READY TO GET STARTED? Knowledge Your safety is your responsibility. A little time spent in preparation will significantly reduce your risk of injury. Read and understand this manual. Know what the controls do and how to operate them.
12 BEFORE OPERATION IS YOUR PUMP READY TO GO? Check the General Condition of the Pump For your safety, and to maximize the service life of your equipment, it is very important to take a few m oments before you operate the pump to check its condition.
13 BEFORE OPERATION Check the Suction and Dischar ge Hoses Check the Engine Check the general conditi on of the hoses. Be s ure the hoses are in serviceable condition before connectin g them to the pump. Remember that the suction hose must be reinforced construction to prevent hose collapse.
14 OPERA TION SAFE OPERATING PRECAUTIONS To safely realize the full potential of this pump, you need a complete understanding of its op eration and a c ertain amount of practice with its controls. Before opera ting the pump for the first time, please review the IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION on page and the chapter titled BEFORE OPERATION .
15 OPERATION PUMP PLACEMENT TOTAL HEAD At least 3 feet (1 meter) DISCHARGE HEAD SUCTION HEAD Always position the pump in an upright position on a firm level surface at least 3 feet (1 meter) away from any walls or other equipment. For best pump performance, place the pump near the water level, and use hoses that are no longer than necessary.

17 OPERATION DISCHARGE HOSE INSTALLATION OPTIONAL GARDEN HOSE INSTALLATION (discharge only) HOSE CLAMP HOSE CONNECTOR DISCHARGE HOSE GARDEN HOSE THREADS GARDEN HOS E ADAPTER 1-INCH PUMP DISCHARGE PORT THREADS Attach a hose and hose connector to the pump’s discharge port.
18 OPERATION DISCHARGE PORT GARDEN HOSE ADAPTER Overtightening the adapter can damage the thr eads. If the garden hose is equippe d with a shut off valve or nozzle, do not shut off the discharge water for a long period of time, as that could cause the pump to overheat.
19 OPERATION PRIMING THE PUMP STARTING THE ENGINE PUMP CHAMBER FILLER CAP CHOKE LEVER C C L L O O S S E E D D Before starting the engine, remove the filler cap from the pump chamber, and completely fill the pump chamber with water. Reinstall the filler cap, and tighten it securely.
20 OPERATION THROTTLE LEVER PRIMING BULB FUEL RETURN TU BE (clear-plastic tube) I I D D L L E E Press the priming bulb repeatedly until fuel can be seen in the clear- plastic fuel return tube. Move the throttle lever away from the IDLE position , but no farther than the halfway point.
21 OPERATION IGNITION SWITCH O O N N D D i i r r e e c c t t i i o o n n t t o o p p u u l l l l STARTER GRIP Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Hold the carrying handle securely and pull the starter grip lightly until you feel resist ance, then pull briskly in the d irection of the arrow as shown below.
22 OPERATION CHOKE LEVER OPEN If the choke lever was moved to the CLOSED position to start the engine, gradually move it to the OPEN position as the engine warms up.
23 OPERATION SETTING ENGINE SPEED THROTTLE LEVER L L O O W W H H I I G G H H After starting the engine, move the throttle lever to the HIGH position for self-priming, and check pump output.
24 OPERATION STOPPING THE ENGINE THROTTLE LEVER IGNITION SWITCH O O F F F F L L O O W W To stop the engine in an emergency, simply turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Under normal condi tions, use the foll owing procedure. After use, remove the pump dr ain plug (see page ), and drain the pump chamber.
25 SERVICING YOUR P UMP THE IMPORTANCE OF MAINTENANCE Maintenance, replacement, or repair of emission control devices and systems may be performed by any engine repair establishment or individual, using parts that ar e ‘‘certified’’ to EPA st andards.

28 SERVICING YOUR PUMP REFUELING FUEL TANK CAP MAXIMUM FUEL LEVEL Check the fuel level by looking through the translucent f uel tank. If the fuel level is low, refuel in a well-ventilated area with the engine stopped. If the engine has been running, allow it to cool f irst.
29 SERVICING YOUR PUMP FUEL RECOMMENDATIONS To refuel, rest the engine on the ground with the fuel tank cap facing up, as shown . Remove the f uel tank ca p, and fill t he tank with gasol ine to the bottom of the filler neck. Refue l carefully to avoid s pilling fuel.
30 SERVICING YOUR PUMP ENGINE OIL LEVEL CHECK OIL FILLER CAP/DIPST ICK UPPER LIMIT If the oil level is low, fill to the e dge of the oil fil ler hole with the recommended oil (see page ). To avoid o verfilling or underfilling, be sure the engine is in a level position, as shown, while adding oil.
31 SERVICING YOUR PUMP Reinstall the oil filler cap/ dipstick sec urely. Running the engine with a low or excessive oil level can cause engine damage. This type of damage is not covered by the Distributor’s Limited Warranty.
32 SERVICING YOUR PUMP ENGINE OIL CHANGE FUEL TANK CAP OIL FILLER NECK Drain the used oil while the engine is warm. Warm oil drains quickly and completely. Check that the fuel tank cap is t ightened securely. Place a suitable container next to the engine to catch the used oil.
33 SERVICING YOUR PUMP OIL FILLER CAP/DIPST ICK UPPER LIMIT With the engine in a level position, fill to the edge of the oil f iller hole with the recommended oil (see page ). Some oil will remain in the engine after draining. When refilling with fresh oil, start with less than 2.
34 SERVICING YOUR PUMP ENGINE OIL RECOMMENDATIONS AMBIENT TEMPERATUR E Oil is a major factor affecting performance and service li fe. Use 4-stroke automotive detergent oil. SAE 10W-30 is recommended for general use. Other viscosities shown in the chart may be used when the average temperature in your area is within the indicated range.
35 SERVICING YOUR PUMP AIR FILTER INSPECTION AIR CLEANER COVER CHOKE LEVER LOWER TA BS AIR FILTER LATCH TAB AIR CLEANER BASE If the air filter is dirty, cl ean it as described on page . Replace the air filter if it is damaged. Press the latch tab on the top of the air cleaner cover, and remove the cover.
36 SERVICING YOUR PUMP AIR FILTER CLEANING AIR FILTER A dirty air filter will restrict air flow to the carburetor, reducing engine performance. If you operate the pump in very dusty areas, clean the air filter more freque ntly than specif ied in the Maintenance Schedule (see page ).
37 SERVICING YOUR PUMP SPARK PLUG SERVICE TOP COVER 5m mH E XB O L T In or der to se rvice t he spark plu g, you wi ll need a spa rk plug w rench (commercially available). CMR5H Incorrect spar k plugs can cause engine damage. Remove the top cover. Loosen the 5 mm hex bolt with a hexa gon wrench, then remove the top cover.
−− − − 38 SERVICING YOUR PUMP 0.024 0.028 in (0.60 0.70 mm) SPARK PLUG WRENCH SPARK PLUG CAP SEALING WASHER SIDE ELECTRODE First remove any dirt from around the spark plug area, then disconnect the spark plug cap. Remove the spark plug with a 5/ 8-inch spark plug wrench.
− 39 SERVICING YOUR PUMP After the spark plug sea ts, tighten with a 5/ 8- inch spa rk plug wrench to compress t he washer. If reinstalling the used spa rk plug, tighten 1/ 8 1/ 4 turn af ter the spark plug seats. If installing a new spark plug, tighten 1/ 2 turn after the spark plug seats.
40 SERVICING YOUR PUMP COOLING FIN INSPECTION COOLING FINS Loosen the 5 mm hex bolt with a hexa gon wrench, then remove the top cover (see page ). Inspect the engine cooling f ins, and clean out de bris if they are clogged. Install the top cove r, and tighten the 5 mm hex bolt sec urely with a hexagon wrench (see page ).
41 SERVICING YOUR PUMP FUEL FILTER INSPECTION and FUEL TANK CLEANING FUEL FILLER NECK ENGINE OIL FILLER CAP/DIPSTIC K Remove the fuel tank cap, and drain the fuel into an appr oved gasoline container by tipping the engine toward the fuel filler neck. Gasoline is highly flammable and explosive.
42 SERVICING YOUR PUMP FUEL TUBE INSPECTION FUEL FILTER FUEL FILTER FUEL RETURN TU BE (clear) FUEL SUPPLY TUBE (black) Pull the fuel f ilter out through the fuel fille r neck by hookin g the black fuel tube with a piece of wire, such as a partly straightened paper clip.
43 SERVICING YOUR PUMP SPARK ARRESTER SERVICE SPARK ARRESTER MUFFLER 4 mm SCREWS The spark arrester must be serviced every 100 hours to keep it functioning as designed. If the engine has been runnin g, the muffler will be very hot. Allow the muffler t o cool before servici ng the spark arr ester.
44 SERVICING YOUR PUMP SPARK ARRESTER SCRE EN Use a brus h to remove ca rbon dep osits f rom the spa rk arreste r screen. Be careful to avoid damaging the scr een. The spark arrester must be free of breaks and holes. Replace the spark arrester if it is damaged.
45 STORAGE STORAGE PREPARATION Cleaning Proper storage preparation i s essential for keeping your pump trouble- free and looking good. The f ollowing steps will help to keep rust and corrosion from impairing your pump’s function and appearance, and will make the engine easier to start when you use the pump again.
46 STORAGE Fuel PUMP DRAIN PLUG Stop the engine, and allow it to cool. Remove the pump drain plug, a n df l u s ht h ep u m pw i t hc l e a n , fresh water.
47 STORAGE Adding a Fuel Stabilizer to Extend Fuel Storage Life When adding a fuel s tabilizer, fill the f uel tank with fresh gaso line. If only partially filled, ai r in the tank will promote f uel deterioration during storage. If you keep a container of gasoline for ref ueling, be sure that it contains only fresh gasoline.
48 STORAGE Draining the Fuel Tank and Carburet or FUEL FILLER NECK CHOKE LEVER PRIMING BULB FUEL RETURN TU BE (clear) ENGINE OIL FILLER CAP/DIPSTIC K FUEL TANK CAP After all fuel has drained, reinstall the fuel tank cap securely. Wipe up spills immediately.
49 STORAGE Engine Oil STORAGE PRECAUTIONS Change the engine oil (see page ). Loosen the 5 mm hex bolt with a hexa gon wrench, then remove the top cover (see page ). Remove the spark plug (see page ). Apply a couple of drops of clean engine oil into the cylinder.
50 STORAGE REMOVAL FROM STORAGE Check your pump as described in the BEFORE OPERATION chapter of this manual. If the fuel was drained during storage preparation, fill the tank with fresh gasoline. If you keep a container of gasoline for refueling, be sure that it contains only fresh gasoline.
51 TRANSP ORTING If the pump has been running, allow the engine to cool for at least 15 minutes before loading the pump on the transport vehicle. A hot engine and exhaust syste m can burn you and can ignite some materials. Keep the pump level when transporting to reduce the possibility of fuel leakage.

55 TECHNICAL & CONSUMER INFORMATION Carburetor Modificati on for High Altitude Operation At high altitude, the standard carburetor air-fuel mixture will be too rich. Performance will decrease, and fuel consumption will increase. A very rich mixture will also foul the spark plug and cause hard starting.
