1-1 1. PRINCIPLE OF THE AUT OPILOT 1.1 Principle of A utopilot An autopilot is an auto mat ic device for steering a vessel and m aintaining its heading in an int ended direction.

PRI NCIPL E OF THE A UTO PI LOT 1-2 1.2 Principl e of Op eration In the AUTO modes, the heading inf orm ation from a heading sensor is continuousl y compared with the course that is set on the autopilot’s controller . (in the NA V mode, the course to t he waypoint is received f rom a plotter connected to the NA Vpilot-500).

3-1 3. STEERING MODES The NA Vpilot-500 system is capable of six primary steering m odes: STBY (manual), AUT O, NA V , TURN, REMOTE (F U and NFU) and DO DG E. 3.1 STBY Mode After turning on the power , the equipment goes to the ST BY mode. This is a manual st eering mode.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-2 3.2 A UTO Mode 3.2.1 Using the AUT O mode The NA Vpilot-500’s AUTO mode steers t he boat automat ically on a course set by the operator . Note: The AUTO mode will not com pensat e for the effects of wind or tide, which can push you off course in the ath wart ship direction.
3. ST EERING MODE 3-3 3.2.2 A D V A NCED AU T O mode AUTO mode will maintain a set course, but your vessel ’s course may be shifted by the effects of current or wind. ADV ANCED AUT O mode m aintains a set course while com pensat ing f or the effects of w ind and tide.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-4 3.3 NA V Mode 3.3.1 S t arting the NA V mode If a dest inat ion waypoin t is set on a GPS / Plotter , the NA Vpilot-500 can receive this inf orm ation and gui de t he boat to t he destination waypoint as det e rm ined by the plotter .

ST EERING MODE 3-5 3.3.2 Selecting sailing method of NA V mode W hen your vessel goes off course while navigating bet ween the origin ( previous waypoint) and your current destination waypoint because of a rem ote control command, etc. the NA V mode uses one of two met hods to get back on course: COURSE or XTE.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-6 3.3.3 Sw itching wa y point W hen you arrive at a waypoint on a route while in the NA V mode, you can switch to the next waypoint autom atically or m anually . The AUT O setting will automat ically switch to t he next destinat ion way point when yo ur boat is within the arrival alarm area (set on the plott er).
3. ST EERING MODE 3-7 3.3.4 Selecting the boat’s steering behavior af ter arriving at your destination w a y point The “Fishing m ode” can be enabled and set up control your boat ’s steering behavior after it reaches the last waypoint in a route.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-8 3.4 TURN Mode The [TURN] key provides the various t urning mot ions depending on t he m ode in use. There are five different turn type; 180º or 3 60º turns (for AUTO mode only), ORBIT , SPIRAL and FIG URE EIGHT . All turn type are available in cloc kwise and counterclockwis e direction.
3. ST EERING MODE 3-9 180º TURN (for A U TO mode only) This function changes t he current set course by 180º in the opposite d irection. After the 180º turn completely , the message “TURN CO MPLETED” appears. Return to the AUTO mode by pressing the cour se control knob.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-10 ORBIT W hen ORBIT is enabled, your boat will orbit ar ound the boat ’s current position. If ORBIT is enabled while in t he NA V m ode, the boat orbits around the (last ) waypoint. This function requires a pl otter or G PS be connected.
3. ST EERING MODE 3-1 1 5. Rotate the course control knob t o select " ◄ ORBIT" or "ORB IT ► ", and then press it. The message “ST AR T TO T URN BY FISHING MODE” appears, and the b oat runs for the distance se t at step 3, and then s tart s making an o rbit similar to the figure on the previous pa ge.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-12 SPIRAL The boat will spiral in the direction of current heading (STBY), set course (AUTO) or the course to the next waypoint (NA V) that was active at the m oment that the SPI RAL mode is select ed. The radius of the “spiral” can be set in the menu.
3. ST EERING MODE 3-13 5. Press the [TURN] key to show the T URN m enu. 6. Rotate the course control knob t o choose “RADIUS O F ORBIT”, and t hen press it. The current value is circumscribed wi th a double rectangle. 7. Rotate the course control knob t o set the spiral speed.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-14 FIGURE E IGHT After the boat has traveled t he distance "d" set on t he menu, it starts turning in a figure eight pattern, aut omat ically returning to t he position where the f igure eight mode was initiated. The “d” is set on menu as RADIUS OF ORBIT .

ST EERING MODE 3-15 Naviga ting to T LL point W hen TLL (T arget Latitude and Lo ngitude) data is input f rom a radar or echo sounder connected in t he STBY , AUTO or NA V mode, t he TURN menu appears. Then, you m ay choose how to progress towards that position, fr om ORBIT (port direction, starboard direct ion) or FIG URE EIGHT .
3. ST EERING MODES 3-16 3.5 REMOTE Mode Four types of opt ional remote cont rollers may be connected to t he NA Vpilot-500. These are used to oper ate the Navp ilot - 500 f rom a remote location. Dial t ype remote contro ller (F A P-5551, 55 52) This remote controller can onl y be used when in the STBY , AUTO or N A V m ode.

ST EERING MODE 3-17 The FU is one of auto s teering modes, which outputs an absolu te value determined with the course control knob to drive the rudde r , thus changing the ship’ s course at a given r ate of change towards a set point.. 2. Rotate the dial on the re mot e controller to set t he rudder angle.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-18 Button (F AP-621 1, 621 2), Lever (F AP-6221, F AP-6222), Dodge (F A P-6231, 6232) type remote controller These controllers m ay be used in the STBY , AUTO and NA V modes. 1. For button and lever t ype remote controllers, turn on the remot e controller power .

3. ST EERING MODES 3-20 3.6 DODGE Mode The DODGE m ode is useful in situat ions where you need t o quickly take control of the helm to avoid an obstruct ion. 3.6.1 Dodging in STBY mode 1. Press the [PO RT] or [STBD] key down to steer appropr iatel y until the boat finishes t he turning.

4-1 4. MENU OPERA TION Most settings are carrie d out in the m enus. The items shown in each menu depend on the mode in use. F or the STBY mode the com plete m enu is shown. W hen the m enu is accessed while in either the AUTO or NA V modes, only the m enu item s that are most frequent ly used in those modes are sho wn.
4. MENU OPERA TION 4-2 4.1.1 Setting p arameters The P ARAMETER SETUP menu sets various paramet ers for the control of t he NA Vpilot -500. 1. In the STBY mode, press the [MENU] key to open the ST BY mode m enu. 2. Rotate the course control knob to select “P ARAMETER SET UP”.
4. MENU OPERA TION 4-3 3. Rotate the course control knob t o select FULL-AUTO, SEMI-AUTO, MANUAL-CALM, MANUAL-MODERA TE or MANUAL-ROUGH as appropriat e, and then press t he course control knob. FULL-AUTO: Auto adjustment and self-learning are on. SEMI-AUTO: Auto adjustm ent is on, self-learning is off.
4. MENU OPERA TION 4-4 Setting parameters manually W hen MANUAL-CALM, MODERA T E or ROUGH is selected at the previous paragraph, set MANUAL P ARAMETER as below . Y o u can set three paramet ers for MANUAL f unction: Weather , Rudder gain and Counter rudder .
4. MENU OPERA TION 4-5 WEA T HER W hen the sea is rough, the boat’s heading f luctuates t o port and starboard. If the rudder is driven very oft en to maintain the set course, t he helm mechanism may wear out. T o prevent this, the weather adj ustm ent makes the NA Vpilot-500 insensit ive to minute course deviations.
4. MENU OPERA TION 4-6 Set rudder gain so that t he boat does not m ake f requent yaw . The figure sho wn below provides general guide lines f or setting rudder gain.
4. MENU OPERA TION 4-7 Adjusting the sensi tivity in moni toring the bo at’ s tri m The NA Vpilot-500 continuall y m onitors the boat’s trim in order to keep t he trim sensitivity optimum . A lower setting is comm on because boat’s trim usually does not change quickly .
4. MENU OPERA TION 4-8 When towing a net W hen a boat is in tow of the fishing gear , its stern is “dragged” by the net. This causes the boat to stray f rom its intended course. T o keep the boat on course, you need to adj ust the trim manuall y , which can be bot hersom e.

5. ALARM S 5-2 5.1.1 Selecting the alar m buzzer Y o u may choose the bu zzer from which to outp ut the audio alarm as follows. Note: If “INT ERNAL + EXTERNAL BUZ ZER” is selected, the external buzzer sounds when turning t he NA Vpilot-500 off . 1.
5. ALARMS 5-3 5.1.3 Setting the w atch alarm The watch alarm periodicall y warns the helm sman to check the autopilo t when in the AUTO or NA V mode. 1. Rotate the course control knob to select “WA TCH ALARM” fr om the ALARM menu. 2. Press the course control key to show the watch alarm options window .
5. ALARM S 5-4 5.1.5 Setting the cross-track error lim it W hen in the NA V m ode, the XTE alarm will sound when the course error has exceeded or f ails within the range set in the f ollowing steps: 1. Rotate the course control knob to select “XTE ALARM” f rom the ALARM menu.
5. ALARMS 5-5 5.1.6 Setting the speed alarm The speed alarm warns you when your boat’s speed is within, outside, over or under the speed range setting. 1. Rotate the course control knob to select “SPEED ALARM” f rom the ALARM menu. 2. Press the course control knob to show the speed alarm options window .
