16 Getting Started EN Connections Connecting to a TV Connect the unit to a TV after considering the capabilities of your e xisting equipment. Before installa tion, plug o ff your TV and this unit. Using the Scart jack 1 Connect the a ntenna or cab le to the AERIAL jack of this unit.
17 Getting Started EN Recording from a camcorder or other Audio-Video equipment with no Scart output jack (A V3) If no S-Video input jack is a vailab le, connect to VIDEO input jack on the front panel using an RCA Video cable . Change the setup when using S-VIDEO IN jack.
18 Getting Started EN Channel setting T uning of this unit to broadcast channels can be perfo r med in two wa ys. Auto tuning Programme the tuner to scan only the channels you can receive in your area. 1 Press [ST ANDBY -ON] to turn on the unit. 2 T urn the TV on and select the input to which the unit is connect ed.
19 Getting Started EN • If “Skip” is set to “O N, ” select “Skip” using [Cursor U / D ] , then press [ENTER] . Select “OFF” using [Cursor U / D ] , then press [RETURN R ] . • If you want to decode scramb led signals, select “Decoder” using [Cursor U / D ] , then press [ENTER] .
20 Getting Started EN Setting the clock Auto Clock Setting Channel T uning must be set before setting A uto Clock. 1 In stop mode, press [SETUP]. 2 Select “Adv anced Setting Menu” using [Cur sor U / D ], then press [ENTER]. If it has already appeared, proceed to step 3.
21 Getting Started EN Selecting the TV aspect ratio Y ou can select the TV aspect ratio to match the format of the programme y ou are playing back with the unit and that of your TV screen (4:3 standard or 16:9 wide screen TV). 1 In stop mode, press [SETUP].
22 Recording EN Information on DVD recording T ype of discs This unit can record o n D VD-R and D VD-RW . Y ou can record on D VD-R only once. On D VD-RW , you can record and erase many times. It is possibl e to record on D VD-R only in Vide o mode. D VD-RW can record in the f or mat you select from Video mode or VR mode.
23 Recording EN Information on copy control Some satellite broadcasts include copy-protected information. If you wish to record them, refer to the follo wing.
24 Recording EN Formatting a disc Choosing the recording format of a blank DVD-RW disc When inser ting a blank disc , the unit automatically star ts to initialise the disc. Y ou can also manually fo r mat a D VD-RW disc once it has been used. After formatting, you can record on the disc with the recording format selected in the Setting menu.
25 Recording EN Reformatting a disc manually If you are using a D VD-RW disc , you can f or mat the disc by perf orming “Format. ” By default it will be in Video mode. Y ou can change this to VR mode using the Setting menu. Note • When you ref ormat the disc, the contents of the disc are erased.
26 Recording EN 5 Select “Stereo” or “Bili ngual” using [Cursor U / D ], then p ress [ENTER]. 6 Press [SETU P] to exit. Hint Stereo: Both modes of Video and VR are recorded in stereo. Bilingual: The sound you set by “Bilingual Recording Audio” is recorded in Video mode .
27 Recording EN Checking the recording picture and sound quality Before recording on a D VD , you can confirm the quality of the picture and sound with the recording speed you selected. 1 Make sure that t he unit is in ST OP or REC mode and a D VD is inser ted correctl y .
28 Recording EN Note • Y ou cannot use the pause function dur ing one-touch timer recording. • The unit will be tur ned off automatically under the follo wing conditions.
29 Recording EN 7 Enter the time to star t and to end using [Cur sor U / D ], then press [Cursor P ]. 8 Select the channel number to record using [Cur sor U / D ], then press [Cursor P ]. T o record from external input, select “A V1, ” “A V2” or “A V3.
30 Recording EN 5 Press [TIMER PROG.] to e xit. 6 Press [T -SET] to return to the timer stand-b y mode. T o check the timer programming in process Press [TIMER PROG.] . Note • If a timer recording is proceeding, that programme is highlighted in red.
31 Recording EN • The timer recording cannot be performed in D VD and VCR at the same time. If you set tw o programmings with the same channel and time both in D VD and VCR, the pro gramming that has priority will be recorded. • Y ou cannot make any D VD operation during D VD timer recording.
32 Recording EN Settings for external equipment Connection to external equipment Connect the external equipment using either the input jacks, A V1, A V2, (Rear) or A V3 (F ront). Howe ver , for A V3 jacks, y ou hav e to select S-VIDEO input or VIDEO input jacks depending on the connected devices .
33 Recording EN Dubbing Mode Y ou can copy a D VD disc to a videotape or copy a videotape to a D VD disc. This function will be av ailable only if the D VD disc or the tape is not copy protected. Before starting this function, prepare f or the recording on the D VD-R / RW disc or the videotape.
34 Recording EN 10 Press [DUBBING]. D VD to VCR duplication will star t. 11 Press [ST OP S ] to stop the recor ding. Note • When you turn off the unit after setting the Dubbing Mode to D VD → VCR, the setting will be se t to VCR → D VD automatically .
35 Recording EN If appears when [STOP S ] is pressed, y ou cannot cancel finalising because the finalising has already reached at a critic al point in its process. If “No” is selected and [ENTER] or [RETURN R ] pressed, finalis ing is continued. Y ou can not cancel finali sing a D VD-R disc once it has star ted.
36 Playing back discs EN Information on playing back DVDs Read the follo wing information before you pla y bac k a DV D. Playable discs Y ou ca n pla y back all the discs listed belo w in this unit. Before attempting to pla y back a D VD , make sure it meets the requirements fo r Region Codes and Colour Systems as described in this section.
37 Playing back discs EN Basic playback Playing back a DVD-RW / DVD-R / DVD+RW / DVD+R disc 1 Press [ST ANDBY -ON] to turn on the unit. T o play back a D VD , tur n the TV on and be sure to select the input to which the unit is connected. 2 Press [D VD ].
38 Playing back discs EN • MP3 files are shown with the icon. Playbac k will star t from the selected track and continue with each one after . • JPEG files are shown with the icon. • The unit can recognize up to 255 groups (or folders) and up to 255 trac ks.
39 Playing back discs EN 1 Press [MENU / LIST]. If the feature is not a vailab le, ma y appear on the TV screen. 2 Select an item us ing [Cursor U / D / L / P ], then press [ENTER]. Repeat this step until all the features you want are set up or to star t playing back the disc from the menu.
40 Playing back discs EN PBC function for Video CDs This unit conforms to ver .1.1 and ver .2.0 of the Video CD standard playbac k control (PBC) function. This enables y ou to play bac k interactiv e software using menu screens. Ref er to the information accompanying the Video CD .
41 Playing back discs EN Special playback Resume playback Y ou can resume playback from the point where you stopped it before. 1 During playba ck, press [ST OP S ]. The resume message will appear . 2 Press [PLA Y P ]. In a fe w seconds, pla yback will resume from the point at which you stopped it bef ore.
42 Playing back discs EN 3 Press [PLA Y P ] to resume pla ybac k. Note • Only step by step f orward is av ailable when pla ying back Video CDs. Slow forward / Slow reverse playback 1 During playba ck, press [P A U SE p ], then press [ f ] or [ r ]. Each time you press [ f ] or [ r ] , the approx imate speed change as follows .
43 Playing back discs EN Hint • T o clear a mar ker , select the mar ker number y ou wish to clear , then press [CLEAR] . • Y ou can mark up to 6 points. Note • All markers are erased when you perform the follo wing operations. - Ope n the disc tra y .
44 Playing back discs EN T rack search Using [SKIP B / F ] buttons 1 During playbac k, press [SKIP F ] to skip the c urrent trac k and mo ve to the next . The unit moves to the ne xt track one after the other . T o go back to the pre vious track, press [SKIP B ] repeatedly .
45 Playing back discs EN Repeat / Random / Program playback / Slide Show Repeat playback 1 During playba ck, press [D ISPLA Y]. 2 Select the icon using [Cursor L / P ], then press [ENTER]. 3 Select the desired option to repeat using [Cur sor U / D ], then press [ENTER].
46 Playing back discs EN 3 Select the desi red track us ing [Cursor U / D ], then p ress [ENTER] or [Cur sor P ]. 4 Press [PLA Y P ] to start program playbac k. Hint • T o erase tracks y ou selected, press [CLEAR] . • Y ou can make up to 50 track settings .
47 Playing back discs EN 3 Select a desired audio soundtr ack or audio channel using [Cur sor U / D ], then press [ENT ER]. With a D VD Video: Audio soundtr ack will s witch. Example: English → Spanish → Fr e n c h With a D VD-RW in VR mode: Audio channel menu will appear .
48 Editing EN Disc editing Y ou can edit a disc recor ded using t he P AL system. It is not possible to edit discs recorded using the NTSC system. Guide to a title list The title list enables y ou to check the titles recorded on a disc easily . Y ou can ch oose a title to play back from the screen and easily edit the titles as y ou wish.
49 Editing EN 4 Select the desired title using [Cursor U / D / L / P ], then press [ENTER]. 5 Select “Title Dele te” using [Cursor U / D ], then p ress [ENTER].
50 Editing EN • Unrecognisable characters will be replaced with asterisks (*). If you delete them, adjoining characters ma y change to asterisks (*) or other . Setting or clearing chapter markers Y ou can add chapter mar kers to a title. After a title is marked with chapters, y ou c an use the chapter search feature .
51 Editing EN Editing discs in VR mode F or discs in VR mode, you can edit from the “Or iginal” menu or the “Pla ylist” menu that you create from the original. Editing original titles Y ou can perform the following operations on the original titles.
52 Editing EN Protecting titles T o prev ent the accidental editing or erasing of the titles, you can protect them in the original menu. Press [D VD ] first. 1 In stop mode, press [SETUP]. “Easy Setting Menu” or “Advanced Setting Men u” will appear .
53 Editing EN Editing the Playlist in VR mode Note • When you pla y back the disc of which the playlist is edited, select “Playlist” in the title menu. Insert a recordable disc before editing. Deleting titles In VR mode, e ven when a title is deleted from the Playlist, the original title will remain in the Original list.
54 Editing EN Editing titles Y ou can edit the title names from this menu. The names you edit will appear on the title list. Press [D VD ] first. 1 Follo w steps 1 to 4 in “ Deleting titl es. ” 2 Select “Edit Title Name” using [Cursor U / D ], then p ress [ENTER].
55 Editing EN Setting pictures as thumbnails Y ou can set a picture as a thumbnail for each title. This helps you to remember the content of the title without having to pla y it back. The first picture of the title is selected as the default. Press [D VD ] first.
56 Editing EN Note • Y ou cannot select the same title twice and combine it into a single title. • If either one of the two original titles is deleted, the combined new title is also deleted. Adding titles to a Playlist Y ou can add a t itle to the pla ylist as you wish.
57 Changing the Setting menu EN T our of the Setting menu The follo wing table sho ws the items you can set and their default settings . Use the table as a ref erence f or efficient operation. Note • Changes you make to the Setting menu remain e v en after power to the unit is switched off or the disc tra y is opened or closed.

60 Changing the Setting menu EN Note When playing bac k disc with copyright protection: • Even if y ou select “96 kHz, ” the sound is down sampled to 48 kHz. Select a setting using [Cursor U / D ], then p ress [ENTER]. Y our set ting is activated.
61 Changing the Setting menu EN DVD-Videos Parental lock level Some D VD-Videos feature a P arental Lock function. If the rating of the inser ted disc exceeds the le vel you set, playbac k will stop. Y ou must enter a pass word before the disc will be pla yed bac k.

63 VCR functi ons EN Playback 1 Press [ST ANDBY -ON] to turn on the unit. T o play bac k a tape, turn on the TV and be sure to select the input to which the unit is connected. 2 Press [VCR ]. 3 Insert a prerecor ded tape, then press [PLA Y P ] to begin play back.
64 VCR functi ons EN Accidental erasure prevention T o prev ent accidental recording on a recorded cassette, remov e its record tab. T o record o n it later , cov er the hole with cellophane tape. One-touch timer recording This feature allo ws you to set the recording length simply by pressing [REC / O TR] .
65 VCR functi ons EN Other operations Press [VCR] first. T o cue or review picture du ring playback (Picture Search): Press [FWD f ] or [REW r ] during pla ybac k. Press it again and the unit wi ll search in super high speed. T o freeze the picture o n TV screen during playback (Still mode): Press [P AU SE p ] .
