Should you have any questi ons with regard to whether you can use the unit where intended pl ease contact your sale s agent or our service departm ent.
Safety, precautionary and compliance instructions 2 Electromagnetic compatibility • External units, such as monitors, joystick s, etc., may only be connected to the interface ports with screened cable s to meet the harmonised standards u nder electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) legislation.
Safety, precautionary and compliance instructions 3 • The unit can be equipped with a power output whi ch may only be used to connect a monitor. • Never open the power supply unit! The components (e. g. power supply) marked with a warning (e.g. lightning) may only be opened, removed or exchanged by authori sed qualified personnel.
Safety, precautionary and compliance instructions 4 • Look after the optical drive and prevent mechanical d amage as well as premature ware of the storage media by takin g the following advice: − Only insert CDs/DVDs in the drive when required an d remove them after use.
Safety, precautionary and compliance instructions 5 Additional notes for proper operatio n • Position the unit so that there is adequate air for cooling. Never cover the ventilation slots on the unit. This could cause overheating and thus shor ten the life of your unit.

Startup 7 2 Startup 2.1 Connecting the computer 2.1.1 Computer connections Most of a computer's connectio ns are located at its rear. Which connections are pre sent and where they can be foun d depends on the particular computer model. The most commo nly used connections are listed in the followi ng table.

13 2.7 The soundcard It is no longer possible to imagine many application s without sound, e.g. DVD films, TV, games, Internet radio etc. Soundcards convert digital sign al s into analog signals that can be processed by speakers o r amplifiers (DA converter).
14 • Soundcard and SPDIF You will be able to tell if SPDIF is available on the sound card by the cinch socket or the digital optical sound conne ction labelled with SPDIF . If you want to use this signal, you will need a speaker system wit h a decoder that can process di gital signals.
15 With this audio standard, the majority of the pro cessing work is assigned to the main processor. It is re sponsible for synthesiser functions and mixes the digital data. The audio data is then converted and sent to a Codec. This then converts t he data into audio signals.

21 2.9 Wireless LAN (WLAN) WLAN stands for W ireless L ocal A rea N etwork, i.e. a cable-free network. The IEEE standard 802.11( I nstitute of E lectrical and E lectronics E ngineers) for wireless LA Ns (WLANs) offers two configuration methods for wirel ess networks, the ad-h oc mode and the infrastructure mode.
22 Infrastructure mode (AccessPoint) With a wireless AccessPoi nt your can operate a WLAN in the infrastructure mode. You may then con nect a wireless conn ection to several wireless devices within a specified area o r the range of the AccessPoint. Communication with the wirel ess nodes is via an antenna.

29 2.10.2 Hard disk The hard disk is a rigid disc, which i s coated with a magnetic substance and protected by a metal housing (ha rd disk drive). A hard disk drive essentially con sists of several discs, a spindle motor, read/write heads and a device for positioning the hea d.

31 Insert a thin item (e.g. a straightened paper cli p) into the emergency ejection openi ng and pr ess carefully until the drive opens. Pull the drive out by hand and remove the disk. This function is intended for emergencie s only. To avoid mechanical damage, this f unction should not norm ally be used.
32 3 Jumper The CD-ROM drive is configured via jumpers. The se determine how the device will be addressed by the IDE controller. If the jumper is set to Master, the dev ice works in Master mode, to Slave in Slave mode. If the jumper is set to CSEL, the device can be controlled with the help of the CSEL interface signal ( C able SEL ect).
33 CD/DVD data carriers The CDs/DVDs available i n the market correspond to different standards. Not every CD/DVD can be read by every optical drive. 40 3.2 The operating system The operating system is the "org aniser" of your comp uter; the operating system coordinates all functions e.g. for the grap hics card, the soundcard, the modem the network card an d the external devices using drivers.

42 3.3 BIOS BIOS is the abbreviation for " B asic I nput O utput S ystem". The BIOS is the hardware-specific co re of an operating sy stem, which is not deleted when the system is turned off and is located in the EPROM.
43 3.4 Drivers Drivers are program s, which allow interaction betwee n the computer, operating system and ot her components. It is therefore important to install the correct component drivers for the correct operating system.

45 3.5 INTERNET The Internet is the world’s large st computer network, and consi sts of many individual networks linked to one another. The features or "services" of the Internet include ele ctronic mail (e-mail) and file transfer (FTP). When using Internet servi ces, it is important to use antiviral software and to update it regularly.

If you have completely set up the antiviral software and you decide to purchase another piece of antiviral software, you must always uninstall the fully installed antiviral software properly first.
47 4 Peripherals Peripherals are external co mponent s of the compute r, i.e. devices connected to the PC such as monitor, keyboard, print er, etc.. 4.1 Keyboard 4.1.1 Keyboard areas and important k eys The keyboard is the "actual" interface b etween the user and the computer.
48 With the straight design place the wri st support on a flat surface and press the keyboard down from abov e with the notches on the underside of the keyboard lined up with the pin s on the wrist support until it slots into place. The wrist support is intended for breaks during typing.
49 Main keyboard The layout of the main keyboard es sentially corresponds to that of a typewriter keyboard. Pressing a key generates the corre sponding character and moves the cursor forward by one position. Most keys have a repeat function, i.e. if y ou hold down the key, the entry of that character is repeated.

52 The <Ins> key The <Ins> key is the Insert key. In the operatin g system mode, characters on the screen can be repla ced by being overwritten with a new character. The <In s> key can be switched to the inse rt mode, and the newly entered characte rs are inserted at the cursor position.

58 4.2 Mouse The mouse is an input device which is guided by han d over a flat and horizontal surface. The reco rd ing of the movement takes place mechanically or optically. The mouse movement is analysed by the computer and the cursor is mov ed accordingly acro ss the screen.

60 4.3 Monitor A monitor is, of course, part of the PC. It is the visual medium of communication between t he user and the machine. It is important that you follow the instructions relating t o ergonomics, which should be contained in the instruct ion manual for the monitor.
61 5 Expansion of performance 5.1 Upgrading the system Your system is of a modular configuration. This mea ns that in general you have the option of upgrading your sy stem with various components and module s (e.g. working memory, ha rd disk, graphics card, etc.
62 5.2 Opening and closing the housing CAUTION! Only qualified personnel should open the PC. Tampering with the unit will result in a loss of the right to guarantee claims and the discon tinuation of the manufacturer’s guarantee obligatio n.

67 5.4 Installing additional hard disks and drives Your PC also gives you the option of installing additional hard di sks (HD) or drives. Once you have opened the housing in accordan ce with all of the aforementioned safe ty instructions, you can use the technical options available to enhance your system.
68 6 Troubleshooting (FAQ) There are two general types of error message: • Softwa re error me ssages • System error messag es 6.1 Software error messages Software error messages are displayed on the scre en by the operating system or an application.
69 • The worst-case scenario is that the operating system has been damaged, e.g. by a virus. If this is the case, execute a "complete reinstallation of the operating system".

The keyboard is producing characters other than those shown on the keys. • Check the display light on the keyboard to make sure that the NUM LOCK or CAPS LOCK KEYS are not activated.
