13 Getting Ready 2 Plug the batt ery charger into a power outlet. The charg ing in dicator li ghts oran ge and charging begins. When charg ing is com pleted, th e indicato r turn s off.
14 Load ing the B attery 1 Open the battery cover. CHECK Check that the camera is turned off before opening the battery cover. CAUTIO N • Do not open the battery cover while the camera is on. This could damage the Memory Card or ruin the image files on the Memory Card.
15 Getting Ready 3 Close the battery cover. To rem ove th e batt ery Open the battery cover, and unlock the battery release catch with your finger. CAUTIO N Make sure the camera is turned off before removing the battery.
16 Load ing the Me mory Card Although you can store pi ctures i n the c amera’ s intern al memory, you can stor e many more images on the Memory C ard (so ld separ ately). You can u se the xD- Pictur e Card and th e SD Mem ory Card with the F inePix F480 / Fi nePix F485 / FinePix J5 0.
17 Getting Ready CAUTIO N Be sure to unlock the protection of the SD Memory Card before inserting it. If it is locked, recording/deleting images, as well as formatting are not available. To unlock the protection, slide the switch back, and the SD Memory Card will work normally.
18 Load ing the Memory Card CAUTIO N • When storing Memory Cards, make sure th at they are kept out of the reach of children. A Memory Card could be swallowed and ca use suffocation. If a child swallows a Memory Card, seek medical attention or call emergency number right away.

20 Tur ning On and O ff Setting the language, date , and time When usin g the camera for the firs t time after purchasing, the lan guage, da te, and time a re clear ed. Set the langua ge, date, and tim e. 1 [ ] screen appears when turning the camera on.

25 Using the Camera Taki ng Pic tures (A UTO M ode ) This section describes th e basic operat ions. 1 Turn the cam era on. A Press POWER (FineP ix F480 / FineP ix F48 5) / ON/ OFF (FineP ix J50) down fully to turn the came ra on. B Set the Mode d ial to q .
26 Taking Pictures ( AUTO Mode) 2 Check the composition on the LCD mo nitor. To adjust zoom scale using the Zoom switc h: MEMO • S elect e Macro mode to take close-up shots ( ➝ p.48). • U se digital zoom when you want to shoot the subject closer ( ➝ p.
27 Using the Camera CAUTIO N When pressing the shutter button halfway, a lens operation sound may be heard. 4 Press the shutter button fully. CAUTIO N When taking a picture using the flash, the image may disappear and go dark briefly due to flash charging.
28 Taking Pictures ( AUTO Mode) Z Indica tor lamp display The indicator lamp ligh ts or blinks when pre ssing the shutter bu tton, e tc. The ind icator lamp shows th e camera status. MEMO Detailed warning messages appear on the LCD monitor ( ➝ p.107-110).
29 Using the Camera Taking pictures with the focus and exposure locked In th e abov e compo siti on, th e subje cts ( two peop le in this case) are not in th e AF fra me. Press ing the sh utter b utton halfway at this point will result in the subje cts being out of focus.
30 Taking Pictures ( AUTO Mode) 3 Continue t o hold the shut ter butt on down halfway. Move the camera back to the original image and press the shutter b utton full y. MEMO • AF/AE lock can be applied repeatedly before the shutter is released. • Use AF/AE lock in all Shooting modes to guarantee excellent results.
31 Using the Camera Adjusting the shot composition Select the LCD monitor display. Press DISP/BACK to cha nge the LCD monitor display. Position the m ain subject at the interse ction of two lines in this fr ame o r align o ne of the hori zontal lines wit h the horizo n.
32 Viewing the Image s Play back your image s to check th em. For im portant photogra phs, alw ays take a test sho t and view the i mage to mak e sure that th e came ra is wor king normal ly. Settin g the camera to Playback mode Press w du ring sh ooti ng to c hange to Play back mode.

35 Using the Camera Sorting by date In sorti ng by date mode , you can view a ll images taken o n the same day. A Pre ss n , o , p , or q to move the cursor (color ed frame ) to th e selectin g frame.
36 Erasing t he Images /Movie s Setting the camera to w Playback mode ( ➝ p.32) Use this mod e to era se unnec essary ima ges or movi es to have amp le free space o n the Mem ory C ard or int ernal memory . 37 Using the Camera MEMO To erase another frame (file), repeat above steps. When erasing frames (files) is completed, press DISP/ BACK. CAU TION Pressing MENU/OK repeatedly erases consecutive frames (files). Take care not to erase a frame (file) by mistake.
38 Erasi ng the Ima ges/Mo vies MEMO MEMO • W hen using a Memory Card, the image s in the Memory Card are erased. When not using a Memory Card, the images in the internal memory are erased. • S electing BACK returns to single-frame playback without erasing any frames (files).

44 Shooting Mode CAUTIO N • Using the [ DIGITAL ZOOM] allows you to enlarge your subject and shoot it. However, it will lower your image quality. Set the [ DIGITAL ZOOM] when requiring it. • When using [ DIGITAL ZOOM], an increasing ‘speckling’ effect might be observed in the LCD monitor.

58 [SHOOTING MENU] Area shot an d quality sett ing Normal shooting provides an aspect ratio of 4:3 and % shooting provides an aspect ratio of 3:2 (same aspect ratio as 35 mm film and post card). MEMO • The bigger the number of recorded pixels, the better the image quality becomes.

65 Advanced Features — Playback MEMO • When DPOF settings were specified on another camera. When the data includes a frame (file) with DPOF settings that were specified on another camera, [ RESET DPOF OK?] appears. Pressing MENU/OK erases all of the DPOF settings already specified for each frame (file).

71 Advanced Features — Playback Rotating the images ([ IMAGE ROTATE]) When sho oting in the vertical posi tion, th e image appe ars horizon tal on the LCD mon itor. Use this mod e to rotat e an im age and to display c orrect directio n. CAUTIO N Protected frames (files) cannot be rotated.

77 Advanced Features — Movie MEMO If the subject of the shot is very bright, white vertical streaks or black horizontal streaks may appear in the image during playback. This is normal. CAUTIO N • You may not be able to play back some movie files recorded on other cameras.

Select this menu to erase all the frames (files). 84 [ ] [ENGLISH] Specifies the language used for LCD monitor display. 24 [ AUTO POWER OFF] [5 MIN]/[2 MIN]/[OFF] [2 MIN] Sets the time of turn ing camera off when camera is not used.

CHECK MEMO • S etting this function to [C ONT.] makes file management easier as it makes sure that file names are not duplicated when images are downloaded to a PC.

83 Settings The LC D monitor darken s when cam era is no t used for 10 seconds. When this fun ction is act ive, you can save power and get the ma xim um pos sible runni ng tim e fro m your batter ies . MEMO Pressing any button wakes the camera up. CAUTIO N The LCD power save function is disabled during Playback mode and Movie mode.

88 Connecting Came ra Directly to Printer — P ictBridge Function When a printer th at supp orts Pi ctBridge is available , image s can be printed by con necting the camer a direc tly to the P ictBridge- compatible printer without a PC. Connecting to a printer 1 Connect the camera to you r printer using the USB cable.
