5 First Ste ps Charging the Battery The batte ry is no t charged at shipment . Charge the batter y before use. 1 Pl ace the battery in the char ger. Ins ert th e batt ery into th e supp lie d BC-50 battery c harger as shown, maki ng sure that the battery is in the correct orientat ion.
6 Chargin g the B atter y C Cautions: Caring f or the Battery • Do not affix stickers or other objects to the batte ry. Fail ure to observe thi s precautio n could make it i mpossible to remove the battery from the camera. • Do no t sho rt the b atte ry term inals.

8 Insertin g the B attery C Cauti ons • Insert the batt ery in the corre ct orientatio n. Do not use force or attempt to insert the battery upside down or backwards. The bat tery will slide in easil y in the c orrect orientatio n. • The orange battery indicator may not be printed on the batt ery.
9 First Ste ps Inserting a Mem ory Car d Althou gh the camera can s tore pictures i n inter nal memo ry, opti onal xD-Picture Card s or SD memory cards can be used to store additio nal pictures. When n o memo ry car d is i nserted , d appears in the monitor and inte rnal memor y is used for recordi ng and playback.

11 Insertin g a Memory Card First Ste ps C Cautions • Format SD memory cards before first use, and be sure to re format all me mory cards after usi ng them in a computer or othe r device. For more informatio n on formatting memory cards, see page 9 0.
12 Turning the Camera On an d Off Shootin g Mode Press the ON/OFF button to turn the camera on. The lens wil l exte nd and the lens cover wi ll open . Press ON/OFF again to turn the camera off. B Tip: Swi tchin g to Playb ack Mode Press the D button to start playback.

15 Basic Photography and Pla yback Taking Pictures in (AUTO) Mode This section describes h ow to take pictures in mode. 1 T urn th e camera on. Press the ON/OFF bu tton to turn the cam era on. 2 Select mode. Rota te th e mode dial to . 3 Check the ba ttery level.

17 Taking Pictures i n (AU TO) Mode Basic Photography and Pla yback The Fr amin g Grid To displa y a framing g rid or to view or hide other indicators in the monitor, press the DISP/BACK bu tto n. To use the frami ng grid, position the main subject at the intersection of two lines or align one of the hor izo ntal li nes wit h th e ho rizon .
18 Taking Pictures i n (AU TO) Mode 5 Focus. Press the shutter but ton halfway to focus on the main subj ect in the focus fram e. If the camera is able to focus , it will beep twic e and th e indicat or lamp wil l glow green.

21 More on Photography B Intelligent Face Detection and Red-Eye Re moval Intelli gent Fa ce Detectio n allo ws the camera to automatically detect human faces and set focus and exposure for a face anywhere in t he frame for shots that emphasize portrait subjects.
22 B Intellig ent Fac e Detecti on and Re d-Eye Removal 3 Focus. Press the shutter button halfway to set focus and exposure for the subject in the gr een borde r. 4 Sh oot. Press the shutte r button all t he way down to shoot. If B FACE DETECTION S RE MOVAL ON is selected, the picture will be processed to redu ce re d-eye be fore it is r ecord ed.
23 More on Photography Focus Lock To compose ph otograph s with off-center subjects: 1 P ositi on the subject in the fo cus fra me. 2 Focus. Press the shutter button hal fway to set focus and exposure. Focu s and exposure will remain locke d while the shu tter butt on is pressed ha lfway (AF/AE loc k).
24 Focu s Lo ck Autofo cus Although the camera boasts a high-precision autofocus system, it may be unable to focus on the subjects listed be low. If the camera is unable to focus using autofocu s, use focus lock (pg. 2 3) to focus on another subject at the same distance and then recompose the photograph .
25 More on Photography L Close-up s (Macro Mode) Macro mode can be used for close-ups in , A , B , ( H , O , P ), M and F modes (pp. 32– 40). To select macro m ode, press the selector left ( L ). When macro mo de is in eff ect, th e camer a focu ses on su bjects n ear th e cent er of t he moni tor.
26 K Using the Flash (Intelligent Flash) When th e flash is used , the came ra’s Intelligent Flash system in stantly analyzes the scene based on such factors as the bright ness of the subject, its position in the frame, and its distance from the camera.
27 K Usin g the Flash (Intellige nt Flash) More on Photography Red-Eye Removal When S REMOVA L ON i s s e l e c t e d f o r Intelligent Face Detect ion (pg. 21), red-eye removal ( S ) is avai lable in 4 ( V ), fill flash ( U ), and slow sync ( Z ) modes.
28 J Using the Self-Timer The came ra offer s a ten-se cond time r that a llows photographe rs to appear in their own ph otographs, and a two-second timer that can be used to avoi d bl ur caus ed by the came ra mo ving wh en the s hutt er button is pressed.
29 J Using the Self-Tim er More on Photography The self-t imer lamp on the fron t of the camera will blink immediately be fore the pictu re is taken. If the two- second timer is select ed, th e self- timer lamp w ill bli nk as th e timer counts down.
30 5 Exposure Compensation Use exposure compen sation when photograph ing very bright, ver y dark, or hi gh- contrast subjects. To choo se a va lue for e xpo sure c ompen sa tion : 1 Press the 5 butto n. Press the selector up ( 5 ). Exposure com pensa tion will b e high ligh te d in the monito r.
31 5 Exposure Compensa tion More on Photography A Notes • Exposure compensation is avai lable in M and F modes only. • At settings other than ±0, a 5 icon is d isplayed i n the monitor. • Exposure compensation is not rese t when the c amera is turned off; to restore normal exposure control, choose a value of ±0.
32 Shooting Mode Choose a shootin g mode according to the scen e or type of subjec t. To choose a sho oting mode, rotate the mode dial t o the desire d setting (pg. 4 ). The foll owing modes ar e availa ble: AUTO Choose f or cr isp, c lear snaps hots (pg.
