21 Getting Ready CAUTIO N • When storing xD-Picture Card s, make sure that they are kept out of the reach of children. An xD-Picture Card could be swallowed and cause suffocation. If a child swallows an xD-Picture Card , seek medical attention or call emergency number right away.

30 Taking Pictures ( q AUTO Mode ) 4 Press the shutter button fully. CAUTIO N When taking a picture using the flash, the image may disappear and go dark briefly due to flash charging. The indicator lamp blinks orange during charging. MEMO • When the subject is not in the AF frame , use AF/ AE lock to take the picture ( ➝ p.

32 Taking Pictures ( q AUTO Mode ) Using Intelligent Face De tection when taking pictures Intelligent Face Det ection allows you to focus on and adjust the brightn ess of people’s faces. Intelligent Face Detection is effective with the camera held horizontally or vertically.
33 Using the Camera CAUTIO N • If the camera or subject move as the picture is taken, the subject’s face may move ou t of the Intelligent Face Detection frame. • When the camera is detecting multiple faces, the green frame is set around the face near the ce nter.
34 Taking Pictures ( q AUTO Mode ) 1 Move the camera slightly so that one o f the subjects is in the AF frame. 2 Press the sh utter button d own halfway t o focus on the subject. 3 Continue to hold the shu tter butt on down halfway. Move the cam era back to the original image and press t he shutter button full y.

38 Viewing the Imag es Single-f rame play back Intelligent Face D etection When playing back images taken with Intelligent Face Detection ( ➝ p.32) ( appears on the screen ), press (Intelligent Face Detection). A frame a ppears around the face that detected by FinePix F31fd.
39 Using the Camera Z Zoom s cales Intelligent Face D etection The image taken using Intelligent Face Detection ( ➝ p.32) ( appears on the screen). Press (Intelligent Face Detection) to alternate between detected faces. Press W or T to display the selected face zoomed in or out.

42 Erasi ng the Ima ges/Mo vies MEMO To erase another frame (file), repeat above steps. When erasing frames (files) is completed, press DISP/ BACK. CAU TION Pressing MENU/OK repeatedly erases consecutive frames (files). Take care not to erase a frame (file) by mistake.
43 Using the Camera MEMO MEMO • W hen using an xD-Picture Card , the images in the xD- Picture Card are erased. When not using an xD- Picture Card , the images in the internal memory are erased. • P rotected frames (files) cannot be erased. Unprotect the frames (files) before erasing them ( ➝ p.

50 Setting t he Shoot ing Mode This m ode shoots 2 image s contin uously with out flash and with flash. S hooting w ith fla sh allow s you to ta ke a picture of a main subject b rightly . Shoot ing withou t flash produces beautifu l image s that r etain the n atural ambien ce.
51 Advanced Features — Photography Use this mod e to take pictures of a movin g subject. It gives prio rity to fa ster shutter sp eeds. CHECK When setting . Sport mode, the camera sets to High-speed shooting mode ( ➝ p.80) automatically. Use this mod e for s hooting evening an d night scenes.
52 Setting t he Shoot ing Mode 2 Select the exposure time. Use this mode to shoot fireworks. It is eff ective for ta king more vi vid shot s of fireworks with a s low shutter. CHECK • F lash cannot be used in the Fireworks mode. • S hutter speed setting: 1/2 sec.

54 Setting t he Shoot ing Mode Use this mod e to preve nt darkeni ng images and provide cr isp, clear sho ts, when sh ooting at beach under str ong su nlight. Use this mode f or shoo ting with a wa terpro of case. It is effective for tak ing more vi vid shots of ocea n blue.
55 Advanced Features — Photography Use this mod e to take clear close-up sho ts when zooming u p a flow er. It is effective for tak ing more v ivid shots of flower petal. CHECK • Flash cannot be used in the Flower mode. • Focal range Wide angle: Approx.
56 Setting t he Shoot ing Mode Picture Stabilizat ion Use this mode to select a fast s hutter speed tha t reduces camera sh ake and m oving-su bject blu rring. CHECK • Available flash modes: AUTO, b , d , C • Only AUTO can be selected for the ISO (sensitivity) setting.
57 Advanced Features — Photography Z Selectin g the Sh ooting mode s etting This is an a utomatic m ode to set the ape rture. Use this mode to have the ar ea in front of an d behind the subject out of focu s (large aperture ) or h ave both n ear and far s ubjec ts in focus ( small aperture) .
58 Setting t he Shoot ing Mode CAUTIO N Aperture By adjusting the aperture, you can change the depth of focus (depth of field). Selecting a larger number o f aperture (closed) obtains a larger depth of focus. Selecting a smaller number of aperture (open) has the area in front of and behind the subject out of focus.
59 Advanced Features — Photography This is an a utomati c mode to set the shutter spe ed. Use this mo de to fre eze a moving subject (fast shut ter sp eed) or convey the impr ession o f movemen t (slow sh utter speed). CHECK Shutter speed setting 3 sec.

63 Advanced Features — Photography This m ode allo ws you to take pict ures of people at nigh t that clearly show bo th your sub jects and the night t ime backdrop. To prev ent cam era shake , always use a tripod. Using n synch ronizes R ed-eye reducti on mode.
64 d Setting th e Flash (Intelligent Fla sh) CHECK Effective flash range ( S : AUTO) Wide-angle: Approx. 60 cm to 6.5 m (2.0 ft. to 21.3 ft.) Telephoto: Approx. 60 cm to 3.5 m (2.0 ft. to 11.5 ft.) If you take pictures outside of the effective flash range, the image may appear dark even if the flash is used.

93 Advanced Features — Playback MEMO • When DPOF settings were specified on another camera. When the data includes a frame (file) with DPOF settings that were specified on another camera, “RESET DPOF OK?” appears. Pressing MENU/OK erases all of the DPOF settings already specified for each frame (file).
