19 Getting Ready Load ing th e xD-Picture Card Although you can store pictu res i n the came ra’s i nternal memory, you can stor e many more images on the xD- Pictur e Card (so ld separat ely). Ther e is a slot for the xD- Pictur e Car d inside the batter y compartm ent.
20 Loadin g the xD-Picture Card CAUTIO N • Whe n storing xD-Picture Card s, make sure that they are kept out of the reach of children. An xD-Picture Card could be swallowed and cause suffocation. If a child swallows an xD-Picture Card , seek medical attention or call emergency number right away.

27 Using the Camera 2 Check the composition on the L CD monitor. To adjust zoom scale u sing the Zoom button: MEMO •S e l e c t e Macro mode to take close-up shots ( ➝ p.55). • Use digital zoom when you want to shoot the subject closer ( ➝ p.101).
28 Taking Pictures ( q AUTO M ode) 4 Press the shutter button fully. CAUTIO N When taking a picture using the flash, the image may disappear and go dark briefly due to flash charging. The indicator lamp blinks orange during charging. MEMO • Whe n the su bject is not in the AF frame, use AF/ AE lock to take the picture ( ➝ p.
29 Using the Camera Z Indicato r lamp display The indicator lamp ligh ts or blinks when pressing the shutter bu tton, etc. T he indicato r lamp sho ws the ca mera status.
30 Taking Pictures ( q AUTO M ode) Taking pictures with the focus and exposure locked In th e abo ve com pos iti on, the su bje cts ( two pe opl e in th is case) are not in th e AF fra me. Press ing the sh utter b utton halfway at this point will result in the subje cts being out of focus.
31 Using the Camera 3 Continue t o ho ld the shutter butt on down halfway. Move the camera back to the original image and p ress the shutter b utton full y. MEMO • AF/A E lock can be applied repeatedly be fore the shutter is released. • Use AF/AE lock in all Photography modes to guarantee excellent results.
32 Taking Pictures ( q AUTO M ode) AF-assist illuminat or Use this illuminator to focus on th e subject in dimly lit conditions. When p ressing t he shutter button down hal fway, th e camera fires the AF-assist illuminator (gre en) while focusing on your subje ct.
33 Using the Camera Position the m ain subject a t the interse ction of two lines in th is f rame or al ign one of the horizo ntal lines with the hori zo n. Us e thi s fr ame as a guide t o the subje ct’s size and the b alance o f the s hot while com posing a shot.

43 Advanced Features — Photography Z Selecting Scene p osition setting This m ode prod uces beauti ful image s that retain the n atu ral am bie nce w hen shots are taken in low-light conditions. This mode is a lso ideal for shooting i ndoor or situ ations wher e th e fla sh can not be used.
44 Setting t he Shoot ing Mode This m ode shoots 2 image s contin uously with out flash and with flash. S hooting w ith fla sh allow s you to ta ke a picture of a main subject b rightly . Shoot ing withou t flash produces beautifu l image s that r etain the n atural ambien ce.
45 Advanced Features — Photography Use this mod e to take pictures of a movin g subject. It gives prio rity to fa ster shutter sp eeds. CHECK When setting . Sport mode, the camera sets to High- speed shooting mode ( ➝ p.71) automatically. Use this mod e for s hooting evening an d night scenes.
46 Setting t he Shoot ing Mode 2 Select the exposure time. Use this mode to shoot fireworks. It is eff ective for ta king more vi vid shot s of fireworks with a s low shutter. CHECK • F lash cannot be used in the Fireworks mode. • S hutter speed setting: 1/2 sec.

48 Setting t he Shoot ing Mode Use this mod e to preve nt darkeni ng images and provide cr isp, clear sho ts, when sh ooting at beach under str ong su nlight. Use this mode f or shoo ting with a wa terpro of case. It is effective for tak ing more vi vid shots of ocea n blue.

51 Advanced Features — Photography Z Selectin g the Sh ooting mode s etting This is an a utomatic m ode to set the ape rture. Use this mode to have the ar ea in front of an d behind the subject out of focu s (large aperture ) or h ave both n ear and far s ubjec ts in focus ( small aperture) .
52 Setting t he Shoot ing Mode CAUTIO N Aperture By adjusting the aperture, you can change the depth of focus (depth of field). Selecting a larger number o f aperture (closed) obtains a larger depth of focus. Selecting a smaller number of aperture (open) has the area in front of and behind the subject out of focus.
53 Advanced Features — Photography This is an a utomati c mode to set the shutter spe ed. Use this mo de to fre eze a moving subject (fast shut ter sp eed) or convey the impr ession o f movemen t (slow sh utter speed). CHECK Shutter speed setting 3 sec.

When the data includes a frame (file) with DPOF settings that were specified on another camera, “RESET DPOF OK?” appears.
