It is usually used as the zoom b utton, b ut the functions for the v arious modes can be selected when it is used in combination with the SHIFT/D A TE b utton.
5 1. PRELIMINAR Y STEPS P ass the smaller loop end of the strap through the camera’ s strap lug. Ne xt, pass the longer loop end of the strap through the smaller loop , and pull the longer loop end. ✻ When using a commercial strap , chec k the strength and other proper ties of the strap .
6 ★ CR123A/DL123A 3V (one) ✻ One lithium batter y has enough po wer f or taking appro ximately 300 shots (Based on our test conditions). ✻ If many rolls of film are used, when tr av elling, f or e xample, it is desir able to tak e spare batteries (par ticular in areas where it may be difficult to obtain batteries).
7 Chec k the batter y capacity sign on the LCD . q on: Batter y capacity is OK. w o n: Batter y capacity is insufficient; provide a ne w batter y . e b link: Shutter release will not tr ip because the batter y has no charge; change the batter y . ✻ Chec k the batter y capacity sign bef ore using the camera.
8 The lens assemb ly will slide out and be set in a position to enab le e xposure. Close the slide co ver to s witch off the pow er . ✻ If the camera is left to stand f or appro ximately 5 minutes with the slide co v er open, the lens assemb ly will automatically be retracted and the pow er will be s witched off .
9 Press the multi-operation b utton’ s UP or DO WN b utton to correct the numeral b linking on the LCD . Adjustab le items are as f ollows . Y ear : ’98 – ’28 (1998 – 2028) Month : 1 – 12 .
With the Adv anced Photo System The date (y ear :month:day/hour:minute) can be printed on the front and back of the print. F rontpr inting, which can be seen when inser ted in an alb um, and backprinting, which is con venient f or cataloging. Either can be used depending on the pur pose.
11 The date mode will alter nate as shown in the diagr am whene ver the D A TE button is pressed. ✻ The date mode will be displa y ed in the [y ear , month, da y] sequence when the date is realigned e v en when a date mode other than [year , month, da y] has been selected.
12 Mak e sure that the film car tr idge mark “ H ” is not displa y ed in area A of the LCD . ✻ If “ H ” and “ B ” are lit on the LCD , your camera contains a film car tr idge already e xposed. Remov e the film car tr idge , f ollowing the instructions on Fig.
13 Drop the car tr idge q into place and then close the car tr idge cov er w . ✻ Inser t the batter y bef ore inser ting the film car tr idge. When the film car tr idge compar tment cov er is closed, the film is automatically adv anced and “ H ” is displa y ed on the LCD .
14 When the first frame of the film is set, the usab le number of frames (the n umber of frames specified on the film car tridge) is display ed in the e xposure counter . ✻ The number indicated in the e xposure counter decreases b y one each time a picture is taken.
15 The vie w through the finder will change to the style of photographs sho wn when the f or mat selector is operated. The angle of the e xposure will not change . A : P Print (1 : 3) B : H Print (9 : 16) C : C Print (2 : 3) ✻ Figures in ( ) represent the aspect ratio .
16 ● With the c lose-up picture The area visib le in the par t shown will be printed when an e xposure closer than appro ximately 1.5 m is tak en. ✻ When taking close ups, the area seen through the vie wfinder and the area actually photographed will be diff erent.
17 Ev en when any one of the P/H/C pr int f or mat has been selected, the size of the photog raph on the film remains the same (16.7 x 30.2 mm). Pr int f or mat selection will record the print format f or each frame and the e xposure will be printed within the ranges shown in the abo v e illustrations .
18 Ensure that fingers or the camera str ap are not obscuring the lens of flash assembly . Press the multi-oper ation button’ s s mark until the required le v el of zoom has been acquired when the subject is to be magnified. Press the t mark to obtain the wide-angle zoom.
19 Aim at the subject so that it fills the whole AF frame . ( A : AF (A utof ocus) fr ame) When the shutter release b utton is pressed halfwa y and the AF lamp (green) tur ns on, f ocusing is complete. ✻ While the shutter release b utton is pressed halfwa y , the film speed and type of film is indicated in the LCD .

● In the f ollowing cases , the camera ma y not be ab le to f ocus on the subject. Such subjects must be shot using the “AF-loc k” or “Landscape Mode”. (Ref er to Fig.30 – 33 and 50.) q A bright light source such as the sun is near the subject or there is reflected light (from the windscreen of a v ehicle, wa v es, etc.
22 Mov e the camer a slightly so that the subject is inside the AF frame . Press the shutter release button halfw a y down and confir m that the AF lamp lights without moving the camera. (F ocus is loc ked on y our subject in this condition.) Fig. 31 Fig.
23 While holding the shutter release b utton halfw a y down to k eep the A uto-F ocus loc k on, mo v e the camera bac k to the or iginal position to recompose y our picture, then press the shutter release b utton all the wa y down. ✻ The A uto-F ocus lock oper ation can be repeated any n umber of times bef ore the shutter tr ips .
24 When the e xposure counter shows “ B ” and the motor stops, mo v e the film car tr idge compar tment cov er release knob as indicated in q , in the direction indicated in w , and open the film car tridge compar tment cov er .
25 Press the mid-roll change b utton to rewind the film when the car tr idge is to be ejected in the middle of the roll. Do not remov e the car tr idge until “ B ” is displa y ed in the e xposure counter and the rewind motor has ceased to operate .
26 Press in the mid-roll change b utton. The film counter will displa y as it subtracts from the n umber of e xposed frames . When rewinding is completed, “ B ” will be displa y ed by the film counter .
27 Remov e the car tridge and sign sure the sign j appears white. ( A : Film car tr idge with une xposed frames) When a ne w car tr idge is loaded i , the film will be adv anced to the first frame and the number of a vailab le e xposures will be displa y ed.
28 When a car tr idge that was remo v ed in mid-roll j is reloaded, the film will automatically be adv anced to the first une xposed frame . After that, operation is as bef ore. ✻ Ev en if you f orget how many fr ames were e xposed on a car tr idge that was remo v ed in mid-roll, just reload the car tr idge.
29 ✻ If a car tridge is remov ed in mid-roll j and sent to the processor , all frames on the entire roll will be de v eloped. Expose all frames on the roll bef ore sending the car tr idge to the processor f or de v elopment.
Hold down the SHIFT b utton q and press the c mark on the multi-operation b utton w to illuminate only the c guide lamp . Contin ue pressing the c mark to enable sequential selection of the e xposure mode. The mode displa y ed in the LCD will be selected when the SHIFT b utton is released, and the guide lamp will be e xtinguished.
31 b : Red-ey e reduction flash mode Reduces red-e ye The flash lamp will fire br iefly 5 times (pre-flash), then fire the 6 time f or taking y our picture. ✻ The AF lamp sign in the vie wfinder ey epiece sta ys on from pre-flash to e xposure. Do not mo v e the camera while the AF lamp is on.
32 c : Fill-in flash mode T ak es flash e xposures e ven in bright locations. d : Flash off mode The flash lamp will not flash. ✻ When taking pictures in a dark place, we recommend the use of a tripod to pre v ent the camera from shaking. Fig. 48 Fig.

35 With the Adv anced Photo System Messages or titles can be printed on the back of prints when taking pictures. ✻ User title selection can be changed when reprinting. (Some photo finisher’ s ma y not suppor t this f eature.) Press the SHIFT b utton to illuminate the 4 guide lamps ( c / / / r ).
36 Language selection: Hold down the SHIFT b utton q and press the mark on the multi-operation b utton w f or 2 or more consecutiv e seconds to illuminate the guide lamp and set the UP and DO WN guide lamps b linking. The language number will b link on the LCD .
37 Continue to press the SHIFT b utton q and select the number with the UP and DO WN w b uttons. The number displa y ed in the LCD will be selected when the SHIFT b utton is released. (Re f er to page 54 for details on the n umber s .) ✻ Language and titles cannot be amended simultaneously .
38 The title of the last e xposed frame can be changed any n umber of times bef ore the ne xt fr ame is e xposed. This is con venient when one has f orgotten to set the title bef ore e xposure, or when changing the title. ✻ Ov erwr iting is not possib le if the car tr idge is remov ed midw a y or the batter ies are remov ed after e xposure.
39 The e xposure film is rew ound once (the e xposure counter also counts bac k 1 frame) then retur ned to the last position. The e xposure counter also retur ns to its original value , and the title is changed. With the Adv anced Photo System The desired print quantity for each fr ame can be set when taking pictures.
40 Press the SHIFT b utton to illuminate the 4 guide lamps ( c / / / r ). ✻ 3 guide lamps ( c / / r ) will be illuminated during pr int quantity specification. ✻ When y ou want to select both user title selection and print quantity , set either of the functions after taking the photogr aph.
41 Continue to press the SHIFT b utton q and select the quantity with the UP and DO WN w b uttons. The quantity displa yed in the LCD will be selected when the SHIFT b utton is released. ✻ If y ou want to cancel the specified print quantity , reset the pow er s witch.
42 This is con venient when one has f orgotten to set the print quantity before e xposure, or when one does not want a print because of an e xposure f ailure. ✻ Ov erwr iting is not possib le if the car tr idge is remov ed midw a y or the batter ies are remov ed after e xposure.

47 ● Photograph y against the sun When photogr aphing a person who is backlit or standing b y a window , the subject appears as a shadow . As a result, the f eatures will be too dar k to distinguish. In this case also , the multi-progr am flash automatically provides the correct amount of light so that y ou can take beautiful pictures .
48 c Since this camera is computer-controlled, it almost ne ver oper ates erroneously . If erroneous operation should occur , remov e and then reload the batter y .
