About This Guide Use this guide as you install and operate the ta pe drive. In addition to instructions for installation and operation, this guide provides information ab out selecting and maintaining data cartridges, clea ning the tape drive, and packin g the tape drive for shipment.
1 Installing the tape drive This section provides instructions fo r the following tasks: ■ Unpackin g and handli ng the tape drive (page 8) ■ Setting the SCSI ID (page 9) ■ P r e p a r i n gt h .
Unpacking and Handling the tape drive The tape drive’s packagin g is designed to protect t he tape drive from shock, vibration, moisture, and electrostatic discharge (ESD). Sa ve all original packaging in ca se you need to repack o r ship the tape drive.
Setting the SCSI ID After you have unpa cked the tape drive, you can set the tape drive’s SCSI ID. You can use eit her of the following meth ods: ■ Attach jumpers (shunts) to the pins on the tape drive’s SCSI ID jumper block. Jumpers are already installed on the jumper block when the tape drive is shipped.
Setting the SCSI ID with a Remote Switch If you want to set the SCSI ID remotely, you can attach a remote switch assembly (not pro vided with the tape drive) to the tape drive’s SCSI ID jumper block. To set the SCSI ID with a remote switch, follow these steps: 1.
Preparing the Tape Drive for the SCSI Bus The SCSI bus that you attach the tape drive t o must be terminated correctly to ensure proper o peration. The devices that are p hysically located at each end of the SC SI cable must have terminators insta lled.
Replacing the R-Packs If you need to put the R-packs back in the t ape drive, make sure that pin 1 of each R-pack is aligned with pin 1 of the socket and that no pins are bent.
Connecting the SCSI Cable After removing or installing terminat ors as required, connect the SCSI cable to t he SCSI connector on th e back of the tap e drive. The connector is keyed so that it can be connected only one way. Figure 4 shows the loca tion of the SCSI con nector.
4. If there is a cover plate over the drive bay yo u plan to use, remove it. Refe r to your computer system documentation for instructions. K eep any screws or mounting clips; you may need them to secure the tape drive to the drive bay. Note: If necessary, r emove a floppy disk drive to provide an empty half-high drive bay for the tape drive.
3. From the front of the c omputer, thread the SCSI cable thr ough the ope n drive bay, as shown in Figure 6. Slid e the tape drive i nto the bay until the f r o n to ft h ed r i v ei sf l u s hw i t ht h ef r o n to ft h ed r i v e bay. 4. Connect t he SCSI cable to the SCSI adapter car d in your computer.
5. Slide the tape drive into the drive bay and secure the drive to the bay as instructed in you computer system d ocumentation. 6. If you needed additional chassis groundi ng, connect a 1 ⁄ 4 -inch female s pade connect or to the ground tab at the rear of the t ape drive.
7. L o c a t et h ep o w e rc o n n e c t o ro nt h eb a c ko ft h et a p e drive. Connect the p ower cable to the power connect or as shown in Figure 8. CAUTION The power cable plug and the power connector are keyed so t hey can fit togeth er in only one way.
Performing the Initial Power On The procedure you use to perf orm the initial power on depends on how long the t ape drive has been stored. If y ou are not sure how long the tape drive ha s been stored, check the MLCH (machine lev el control history) label on the top of the tape drive to find out when the tape drive wa s manufactured.
Tape Drive Stored for Six Mon ths or More If the tape drive has been stored fo r six months or more, perform the fo llowing steps using your backup softw are to ensure that the tape drive’s internal lubrica tion is properly distributed: 1. Apply power to the tape drive.
2 Operating the tape drive This section includes information about the following: ■ Reading the LEDs ■ Selecting data cartridges ■ Setting the write-prot ect switch on the data cartridge ■ Loading and unloading a data cartridg e Figure 9 shows the controls and indicators on the front panel of the EXB-8505.
Reading the LEDs The tape drive uses three LEDs to indicate its operating states. The LEDs indicate the fo llowing general conditions: ■ When the top (amber) LED is flashing, the tape d r i v eh a sa ne r r o ro rn e e d st ob ec l e a n e d . ■ When the middle LED is on or flashing, SCSI bus activity is occurring.

Selecting Data Cartridges By selecting high-quality data cartr idges and storing them properly, you can expect a long shelf-lif e and optimal data integrity from your t apes. High quality tapes also help maintain tape drive reliability by minimizing wear on the recording heads.
EXATAPE 160m XL 8mm Data Cartridges The EXATAPE 160m XL 8mm Data Cartridge is intended for use in the EXB-8502XL and EX B-8505XL only. The 160m XL tape is equipped with a Recognition System stripe, loca ted o nt h et a p el e a d e r ,t h a te n a b l e st h eX Lt a p ed r i v et or e c o g n i z e the tape as dat a-quality metal-par ticle media.
Setting the Write-Protect Switch on a Data Cartridge EXATAPE™ 8mm data cartridges ar e equipped with a write-protect switch, shown in Figure 10 , to prevent data on the tape from bein g unintentionally ove rwritten. Before loading a da ta cartridge in the tape drive, ensure that the write-protect switch is set correctly for the desired operation.
Loading a Data Cartridge in the tape drive Important Exabyte strongly recommends tha t y ou use EXATAPE™ data-grade metal-particle m edia in the tape drive. Refer to page 23 for informa tion about s e l e c t i n ga p p r o p r i a t et a p e sf o ry o u rt a p ed r i v e .
Unloading a Data Cartridge The unload button is the only operat or control on the tape drive. It is used to unloa d the tape from the tape drive. The unload button can als o be used to clear serv o and other errors. If a ser vo or hardware erro r occurs, press the unlo ad button to reset the tape drive.
3 Preventive Maintenance The only routine maintenance required by the tape drive is regular cleaning of t he tape drive’s heads and tape path. T he only cleaning material authorized for use with the ta pe drive is an Exaby te or Exabyte-approve d 8mm Cleani ng Cartridge.
Using the 8mm Cleaning Cartridge Exabyte 8mm Cleaning Ca rtridges are available in two sizes: 3c and 12c. Used in the EXB-8205, EXB-850 5, or XL tape drives, the 3c cleaning cartridge provides up to 9 cleanings. The 12c cleaning cartridge provides up to 36 cleanings.
3. To confir m that a cle aning was done, check the LEDs on the front panel . If the cleaning cycle was s u c c e s s f u l ,t h et o pa n db o t t o mL E D sw i l lb eo f f .I f the cleaning cycle was not performed, the LEDs will continue to flash . Repeat the cleaning procedure with a new cleaning cartr idge.
■ Store each cartridge on one of its long edges, not flat on its side (se e Figure 11 on the f ollowing page) . When a da ta cartridge i s stored on i ts side, the tape inside the cartridge is ac tually on its edge. In this position, stress is placed on the tape edges and can lead to tape damage .
4 Shipping the Tape Drive You can ship the ta pe drive with either one drive per ca rton (single-pack) or with thr ee to five drives per carton (multi-pack). Figure 1 2 on page 34 show s the single-pack carton and pack ing materials; Figure 13 on page 35 sho ws the multi-pack carton and packing materials.
Packing the Tape Drive To pack the tape drive for shipment, f ollow these steps: 1. Obtain the original shipping carton or contact your vendo r to rece ive a new one. 2. Assemble the carton and tape it shut at the bot tom with two -inch (51 mm) pa cking ta pe.

Environmental Requirements for Shipment When shipping a tape drive, be sure to co mply with the environmental spe cifications shown in Table 5. Temp. Range -40 ° Ct o+ 6 0 ° C( - 4 0 ° F to +140 ° F) Temp. Variation 1 ° C per m inute up to a maximum of 20 ° C per hour (2 ° F per minute u p to a maximum of 36 ° F per hour) Rel.
Appendix A Installation Requirements This appendix lists the requirements for the fo llowing items: SCSI cable ■ SCSI connect or ■ Power cable ■ Power connector It also provides guidelines fo r attaching the tape drive to a frame and adding optional chassis grounding.
Cable Length Requiremen ts for Differential Configurations For differential SCSI configurations, ensure that the sum of all the SCSI ca ble lengths does not ex ceed 25.0 meters (82.02 feet). A st ub length of no more than 0.2 meters (8 inches) is allowed off the mainline interconnection within any connect ed equipment.
Power Supply The tape dri ve operates fro m standard +5 VDC and +12 VDC supply voltages; it does not use external AC power. Safety agency certificatio n requires that the supplied voltage be from a Safety Extra-Low Voltage source (per IEC 950). CAUTION The tape drive does not provide an y overvoltage or overcurrent pr otection.
Attaching the tape drive to a Frame The main housing of the tape drive includes three sets of mounting holes (two sets on the sides and on e set on the bottom, as show n in Figures 14 and 15) to allow f or a number of mounting positions. Th ese mounting holes accommodate M3 5 6 mm screws.

Chassis Grounding (Optional) If you needed additional chassis grounding, connect a 1 ⁄ 4 -inch fema le spade connector to the groun d tab at the rear of the ta pe drive. Or, connect an M 3-0.5 6 mm self-tapping screw to the grounding hole. The ground t ab and grounding hole are shown in Figure 7 on page 16.
Appendix B Unload Button Options Depending on how your tape drive has been configured, the unload button functions in one o f three ways: ■ As a “normal” unload button (def ault) ■ A sa“ f a s t ”u n l o a db u t t o n ■ As a “super fast” unload button Table 7 summarizes the actions that occur with the three unload button options.
