- 3 - Chapter I: Product Information 1-1 Introduction and safety information Thank you for purchasing this nMAX wireless net work ca rd! Excepting common wireless st andards 802.1 1b/g, this wireless network ca rd is also 802.1 1 Draf t-N comp at ible - data transfer rate is 300Mbp s, and that’ s six times faster than 802.
- 4 - 1-2 Safety Information In order to keep the safety of users and your propert ies, plea se follow the fo llowing safety instructions: 1. This USB wirel ess network card is d esigned for indoor use only . DO NOT expose this network card to direct sun light, rain, or snow .
- 5 - 1-3 System Requirement s An empty USB 2.0 port (May not work on USB 1.1 port, and performance will be greatly reduced) Operation system: Windows 2000, XP , XP64,or Vist a CD-ROM driv.

- 7 - CHAPTER II: DRIVER INST ALLA TION AND CONFIGURA TION 2-1 Network Card Inst allation Please follow the following instructions to inst all your new wireless network card: 1. Insert the USB wireless network card into an em pty USB 2.0 port of your comput er when computer is switched on.
- 8 - 3. The following message will appea r on your computer , click ‘Cancel’. 4. Insert device driver CDROM into the CD/DVD ROM drive of your computer , and execute ‘Setup.exe’ program in ‘Driver’ folder . Please read the end user license agreement and click ‘Y es’ to accep t license agreement.
- 9 - 4. Y o u can choose the configu ration tool used to con figure the wi reless netw ork card h ere. It’s recommen ded to select ‘Edimax Configuration T ool’, which provides fully access to all function of this wireless network card.
- 10 - When you select one mode, please click ‘Next>’ to continue. If you see ‘Found Ne w Hardware’ message again, please ignore it and wait. 6. Please click ‘inst all’ to run the driver inst allation process. If you see ‘Found New Hardware’ message again, please ignore it and wait.
- 11 - 7. Please wait while the install procedure is running. When you see this me ssage, please click ‘Finish’ to complete the driver inst allation process.
- 12 - 8. A new icon will appear at lower-right corn er of your computer deskt op, you can put the mouse cursor on the icon, and the status of wireless card will be displayed as a popup balloon. 9. When you want to configure your wireless connec tion, please right click on this icon, and a po pup menu will appear .
- 13 - 2-2 Connect to Wireless Access Point There are two ways you can configure your wireless netwo rk card to connect to wireless access point: using the Ralink configuration utility which comes with wireless card driver , and using built-in windows zero configuration utility .
- 14 - Here are descriptions of every setup item: SSID: The Service Set IDentifier of wi reless access point or other network devi ce. Y ou can think it as the name of access point of wirele ss device. BSSID: The MAC address of wireless access point or other network device.
- 15 - Authentication: Shows the authent ication mode that acce ss point or wireless devi ce uses. If the wireless access point does not requi re authentication, you’ll see ‘ Unknown’ displayed here. Network T ype: Shows the type of wireless connection.
- 16 - If the access point you selected doe s not enable encryption (The content of ‘Encrypti on’ field of the access point you selected is ‘None’, you’ll be connected to this wireless a ccess point within one minute. Please jump to step 6. If the access point you selected enabl es en cryption, please proceed to next step.

Y ou’ll see ‘Connect ed <-> SSID’ (‘SSID’ is the SSID of the wire less access point or wi reless device you connected to) message displayed at lower-lef t corner of configuration utility , congratulations, you’re successfully con nected to the ac cess point or wirele ss device you selected! 7.
- 19 - 2-2-2 Using Windows Zero Configuration Windows XP and V ista has a built-in wireless network configuration utility , called as ‘Windows Zero Configuration’ (WZC).
- 20 - 3. Right-click ‘Wireless Network Connection’ (it may have a number as suffix if you have more than one wireless network ca rd, please make sure you right -click the ‘Ediamx 802.1 1n Wi reless LAN Card), then select ‘View Available Wireless Networks’.
- 21 - 5. If the access point is protected by encry ption, you have to input its se curity key or passphra se here. It must match the encryption setting on the access point. If the access point you selected does not use encryption, you’ll not be prompted for security key or passphrase.
- 22 - 2-3 Connection Profile Management If you need to connect to dif ferent wireless acce ss point s at different time, like of access p oint of your home, office, cyber cafe, or public wireless service, you can store the conne ction paramet ers (encryption, p assphrase, security etc, etc.
- 23 - Or , you can add a connected wireless a ccess point or wirele ss device to a profile by clicking ‘S ite Survey’ tab, then click ‘Add to Profile’ button:.

- 25 - Here are descriptions of every setup items: Profile Name Please give this profile a na me, up to 32 alphanumerical characters and symbol s are allowed, but sp ace is not allowed. SSID The SSID of the wireless access point or wireless device you selected will be displayed here.
- 26 - TX Power Y ou can select the radio output pow er of wireless network card. Y ou may not need full radio power if you’re not far from wireless acce ss point, and only use a high setting here if you found that radio reception is bad. If you don’t know which one to use, sel ect ‘Auto’.
- 27 - Here are descriptions of every setup items: Authentication Select the authentic ation type of the wireless access T ype point or wireless device you wish to con nect. If you’re adding a profile from an existing access point or wirele ss device, the value will be selected autom atically , and please do not modify it.
- 28 - grayed out. WEP Key Y ou can select key type (Hex or ASC II) and input WEP key here. If encryption is not enabled, or you select ‘WP A ’ as encrypti on type, this field will be disabled an d grayed out.

Y ou can only activate a profile a time, and the profile that is ac tivated currently will have a green check ( ) before its na me. If the wireless access point is not reachable, a red check ( ) will be displayed before it s name.

- 32 - 2-3-3 Using 802.1x - CA Server If you want to use CA server , please click ‘CA Server ’ tab. And the following message will be displayed: Here are descriptions of every setup items: Use certificate Check this box to enable the use of certificate chain.

If you want to know how your wireless network ca rd works, you can use these f unctio ns to get detailed inf ormation about the wireless connection you’re using.
