ABOUT THIS GUIDE Congratulations on you r purchase of the D-Link DES-1008 PA, an 8- Port 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet Sw itch with 4-Port PoE. This Switch integrates 100M bps Fast Ethernet and 10Mbps Ethern et network capabilities in a highly flexible pa ckage.
INTRODUCTION This chapter describes the features of the D-Link DES-1008P A Fast Ethernet PoE Switch and some backgr ound information abou t Ethernet/Fast Ethernet, Switching an d Power over Ether net technology.
Switching Technology Another a pproach to p ushing beyond the l imits of Ethernet t echnology is the devel opment of s witching technology . A swit ch bridges Ethernet packet s at the MAC address level of the Ethernet protocol transmitting a mong connect ed Ethernet or Fast Et hernet LAN segments.
Power over Ethernet (PoE) Power over Ethernet (PoE) integrates power and data onto one single cabling infrastructure, elim inating the need to have AC power available at all locations. Power and Data is integrated on to the same cable, supporting category 5/5e up to 100 Meters.
UNPACKING AND INSTALLATION This chapter provides unpack ing and installation info rmation for the Switch. Unpacking Open the shippi ng cartons of th e Switch and carefully unpack its contents.
Connecting Network Cable The Switch s upport 8 10/ 100Mbps Ethernet po rts and Port 1 ~ port 4 are PoE Enabled ports, these PoE port will automatically activate when a compatible terminal is identified. The Switch will supply power throu gh the Ethernet port t o the connect ed PoE powered de vice (PD).
IDENTIFYING EXTERNAL COMP ONENTS This chapter describes th e front panel, rear panel, and LED ind icators of the Switch. Front Panel The figure below shows the fron t panels of the Switch. Figure 1. Front panel LED Indicator: Comprehensive LED indicators display th e status of the switch and the network (see the L ED Indicators chapter below).
These ports support network speed s of either 10Mbps or 100Mbps, and can operate in half- and full- duplex transfer modes. These ports also support automatic MDI/MDIX crossover det ection, whi ch gives the Switch true, “plug and play” capabilities.
UNDERSTANDING LED INDICATORS The front panel LEDs provide s instant status feedback , and helps monitor an d troubl eshoot wh en needed. Figure 3. LED indicators of the Sw itch System LED PWR: (Powe r.
PoE MAX Green When the power output to PDs is over 42W. No additional PDs can be powered. Off When the system is using less than 42W Blinking Green After the power output to PDs has reached or exceeded the maximum power budget, if the user unplugged certain PDs and made the system power left over 10W, the PoE MAX will blink 2 minutes.
For example: There are POE PDs c onnected to the POE Switch a nd the total power consumption is 48 watts. The system will reserve 4 watts for a buffer and the POE MAX LED will light up. Once there is another POE PD inserted, the system will not provide power to the additional POE PD.
