-3- Intr oduction The D-Link Express EtherNetwork DI -604 is a 4-port Ethernet Broadband Router . The D-Link DI-604 enables us ers to quickly and easily share a high speed Internet connection. The D-Link DI-604 also incorporates many advanced features, traditionally found in more expensive routers.

-9- Getting Star ted Inst al lation Location The DI-604 can be positioned at any c onvenient place in your of fice or house. No special wiring or cooli ng requirements are needed. H owever , you should comply with the following guidelines: Place the DI-604 on a flat horizont al plane.
-10- Configuring the DI-604 The DI-604 provides an embedded Web-based management utility making it operating system indepen dent. Y ou can configure your DI-604 through the Net scape Communicator or Internet Explorer browser in MS Windows, Macintosh, Linux or U NIX base d plat forms.
-1 1- Using the Configur a tion W izar d The Setup Wizard screen will appear . Follow the Wizard step by step to quickly configure the DI-604. Click Next It is recommended that you change the admin password for security purposes. Enter in your new password.
-12- There will be three opti ons to select from. Please sele ct the appropriate option that is used by your ISP . Dy namic IP Address: (ex: Cable users) Select this option to obtain an IP address automatically from your ISP . Please see Dynamic IP Address section.
-13- S t atic IP Address If you selected S t atic IP Address , you will see the following page. Enter in the IP address information provided to you by your ISP . Y ou will need to enter in W AN IP Addr ess, W AN Subnet Mask, W AN Gateway , and Primary DNS.
-14- At this point, the Setup Wizard has compl eted. Click Rest art to save the settings and reboot the DI-604. The DI-604 will save the changes and reboot. Click Close to close out the Setup Wizard screen. Y our setup of the DI-604 is now comp lete. Y ou should be able to access the Internet.
-15- Using the Configur a tion Menu Setup Wizard The Setup Wizard p age is the first p age that appears when logging into the web-based management interface. The Set up Wizard is a utility used to quickly configure the DI-604. It wi ll guide you through four quick and basic steps to help you connect to your ISP .
-16- HOME > W AN > DYNAMIC IP Address Choose Dynamic IP Address to obtain IP address information automatically from your ISP . Select th is option if your ISP does not give you any IP numbers to use. This option is commonly used for Cable modem services.
-17- HOME > W AN > S t atic IP Address Choose S tatic IP Address if all W AN IP information is pr ovided to you by your ISP . Y ou will need to enter in th e IP address, subnet mask, gateway address, and DNS address(es) provided to you by your ISP .
-18- HOME > W AN > PPPO E Choose PPPoE (Poi nt to Poin t Protoco l over E thern et) if you’re ISP uses PPP oE connection. Y our ISP will provide you wit h a username and password. This option is typically used for DSL services. Select Dynamic P PPoE t o obtain an IP addres s automatically f or your PPPoE connection.
-19- Maximum Idle T ime: The amount of time of i nactivity befo re disconnecting your PPPoE session. Enter a Maximum Idle T i me (in minutes) to define a maximum period of time for which the Internet connection is maintaine d during inactivity .
-20- HOME > DHCP DHCP st ands for Dynamic Host Confi guration Protocol. The DI-604 has a built-in DHCP server . Th e DHCP Server will automatically assign an IP address to the computers on the LAN/priv ate network. Be sure to set your computers to be DHCP client s by setti ng their TCP/IP settings to “Obt ain an IP Address Automatically .
-21- ADV ANCED > VIRTUAL SER VER The DI-604 can be configured as a vi rtual s erver so that remote users accessing Web or FTP services via the publ ic IP address can be automatically redirected to loca l servers in the LAN network.
-22- Each virtual service that i s created will be listed at the bottom of the screen in the V irtual Servers List. Th ere are a lready pre-defined virtual services already in the t able. Y ou may use them by enabling them and assigning the s erver IP to use t hat p articular virtual service.
-23- Example #2: If you have an FTP server that you wanted Internet us ers to access by W AN port 2100 and only during the w eekends, you woul d need to enable it as such. FTP server is on LAN computer 192 .168.0.30. FTP uses port 21, TCP . Name: FTP Server Private IP: 192.
-24- Some applications requi re multiple c onnections, such as Internet gaming, video conferencing, Internet telep hony and others. These applications have difficulties working through NA T (Network Address T ranslation). S pec ial Applicati ons makes some of these applications work with the DI-604.
-25- ADV ANCED > FIL TERS > IP FIL TERS Filters Filter s are us ed to den y or all ow LAN c omputer s fr om acce ssing t he Inte rnet. The DI-604 can be s etup to deny internal c o mput ers by their I P or MAC addres ses. The DI-604 c an also block user s fr om accessing restr icted web sit es.
-26- ADV ANCED > FIL TERS > MAC FIL TERS Use MAC Filters to allow or deny LAN computers by their MAC addresses from accessing the Intern et. Y ou can either manually add a MAC address or select the MAC address from the list of clients that a re currently connected to the Broadband Router .
-27- ADV ANCED > FIL TERS > URL BLOCKING URL Blocking is used to deny LAN comput ers from accessing specific web sites by it s URL. A URL is a s pecially formatted text string that defines a location on the Internet. If any part of the URL contains the blocked word, the site will not be accessible and the web page will not display.
-28- ADV ANCED > FIL TERS > DOM AIN BLOCKI NG Domain Blocking is used to allow or deny LAN computers from accessing specific dom ains on the Inte rnet. Domain blocking will den y all requests to a specific domain suc h as http and f tp. It can also allow computers to access specific sites and deny all other sites.
-29- ADV ANCED > FIL TERS > FIREW ALL Firewall Rules is an advance feature used to deny or allow traf fic from p assing through the Broadband Router . It works in the same way as IP Filters with additional s ettings. Y ou can create more det ailed access rules for the DI-604.
-30- ADV ANCED > DMZ If you have a client PC that cannot r un Internet a pplications properly from behind the DI-604, then you can set the client up to unrestricted Internet access. It allows a computer to be expo sed to t he Internet. This feature is useful for gaming purposes .
-31- T OOLS > ADMIN Admin At this p age, the DI-604 administra tor can change the system pa ssword. There are two account s that can access the Broadband R outer ’s Web-Management interface. They are admin and user . Admin has read/write access while user has read- only access.
-32- recommended that you set the IP address to * (star), because this allows any Internet IP address to access the Broadband Router , which could result in a loss of security for your network. If you elect to enable Remote Management, enter the IP Address of your remote location.
-33- T OOLS > SYSTEM System Settings The current system settings can b e saved as a file onto the local hard drive. The saved file or any other saved setti ng file can be loaded back on the Broadband Router . T o reload a syst em settings file, cl ick on Browse to browse the local hard drive and locate the system file to be used.
-34- T OOLS > FIRMW ARE Firmware Upgrade Y ou can upgrade the firmware of the Br oadband Router at t his page. Make sure the firmware you want to u se is on the local har d drive of the computer . Click on Browse to browse the local hard drive and locate the firmware to be used for the update.
-35- T OOLS > MISC Miscellaneous Items These are additional tools and features of the Broadband Router . Ping T est This useful diagnostic u ti lity can be used to check if a computer is on the Internet. It sends ping packet s and list ens for replies from the specific host.
-36- Block W AN Pin g When you “Block W AN Ping”, you ar e causing t he public W AN IP address on the Broadband Router to not respond to ping commands. Pinging public W AN IP addresses is a common method used by hackers to test whether your W AN IP address is valid.
-37- T OOLS > VCT V irtual Cable T ester (VCT) is an adva nced fea ture that integrates a LAN cable tester on every E thernet port on the router . Through the graphical user interface (G UI), VCT can be us ed to remotely dia gno se and report cable fault s such as opens, shorts , swap s, and i mpedance mismatch.
-38- ST A TUS > DEVICE INFORMA TI ON This page d isplays the current infor mat ion for the Broadband Router . It will display the W AN, LAN, and MAC address information. If your W AN connection is set up for Dynamic IP address, there will be a Release button and Renew button.
-39- This page allow s you to observ e the DI-604’s working st atus: W AN • IP Address: W AN/Public IP Address • Subnet Mask: W AN/Public Subnet Mask • Gateway : W AN/Public Gateway IP Address.
-40- ST A TUS > LOG Log The Broadband Router keeps a running log of events and activities occurring on the Router . If the device is rebooted, the logs are automatically cleared. Y ou may save the log files under Log Setting. First Page - The firs t page of the l og.
-41- ST A TUS > ST A TS T r affic S tatistics The Broadband Router keeps st atistic of traffic that p asses through it. Y ou are able to view the amount of pa cket s that p asses through the Router on both the W AN port and the LAN port. The traffic counter will reset if the device is rebooted.
-42- T r oubleshooting If you do not wish to set the st atic IP addr ess on your PC, you will need to configure your PC to request an IP address from the gateway . Click the Star t button, select Settings , and select Control Panel . Double-click the Network icon.
-43- Choose the IP ADDRESS tab. Select Obt ain an IP automatically . Af ter clicking OK , windows might ask you to rest art the PC. Click Ye s . CONFIRM YOUR PC’S IP CONFIGURA TION There are two tools whic h are great for finding out a computer ’s IP configuration: MAC address and default gateway .
-44- IPCONFIG (for W indows 2000/NT/XP) At the command prompt type IPCONFIG and press Enter . Y our PC IP information will be displayed as shown below .
-45- Assigning a S t atic IP Address Note: Residential Gateways/Broadband Ro uters will automatically assign IP Addresses to the computers on t he network, using DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) technol ogy . If you are using a DHCP-cap able Gateway/Router you will not need to assign S tatic IP Addresses.
