-1- Introduction Thank you for choosing the D-Link DGE-550SX PCI-X 1000Base-SX Network Adapter, the value leader among Giga bit Ethernet network adapters. This chapter provides a general de scription of DGE- 550SX ne twork adapter features, with a summary of features at th e end of the chap ter .
-2- Safety Precautions T o protect yourself from injuries and avoi d damage of the device, always obser ve the following safety instructions when installing the network adapter. Av oidi ng Injuries W ARNING: Electr ical Current! Electrical current fr om power , phone, a nd communications cables can be hazardous.
-3- Av oidi ng Damage CAUTION: Electrost atic Discharge! Electrostatic dis charge may dama ge or destroy the network adapter . T o avoid da maging the network adapter : • Put on an antista tic wrist strap (electri cally conductive) and co nnect it to the com- puter chassis before handlin g the network adapter.

-5- Driver Inst allation Windows 2000 D-Link offers an N DIS 5.0 32-bit Minipo r t driver for the DGE-550SX network adapter supporting Windows 2000. T o insta ll the driver , proceed as follows: 1. After you have inst alled the network adapter in your comp uter , boot Windows 2000.
-6- If you are installing the driver using Wi ndows XP Service Pack 1 or earlier , con- tinue with ste p 3. 2. Select N O , NOT THIS TI ME . 3. Select the check box Install from a list or specific location (Adva nced) . 4. Click N EXT . The menu “Please choose your sear ch and inst allation options” is displayed.
-7- Linux The Linux driver for the DGE-5 50SX network adapte r support s the Linux kernel 2.4.13 and higher st able versions. The installation proce dure described in this manual is a general description for Intel/x86 computer s, which is valid for all distributions.
-8- Insta ll the driver T o start the inst allation script, proceed as follows: 1. Execute the following comma nd to start the script: cd DriverInstall ./install.sh 2. Select the option I NST ALLATION M ODE . The driver is now compiled and loaded. This process can t ake a few minutes.
-9- The messa ge “ Do you want to copy driver <driver name>.LAN? ” is displayed. 8. T o copy the driver to the server , select Y ES . If an older version of a D-Link driver is installed on the system, the me ssages “ Save existing file SYS:SYSTEM<driver name.
-1 0- FreeBSD The FreeBSD driver support s the DGE-550SX network adapter on FreeBSD 5.x operating systems running on Intel x86 machines. T o install th e networ k driver on FreeBSD, proceed as follows: 1. After you have inst alled the network adapter in your computer , boot FreeBSD.
