Depres s the brake pedal comp letely and place the control lever in neutral before attempting to start engine.
5 f. Disengage the cutting blade (s) before shif ting in rev erse . The “ No-Cut-In Reverse ” feature is a remin der not t o cut in rev erse and to help avoid back over ac cidents. Do not defeat i t. g. Keep children aw ay from hot or running engines.

8 SECTION 3: ASSEMBLING YOUR LAWN TRACTOR NOTE: This m anual covers various models of hydrostatic tractors within th e 690 series. Please use instructions pertaining only to y our tractor. Un packing • Remove all screws from top of the crate using 1/4" hex he ad socket or a flat blade screwdriver.
9 • Compare the bat tery i n your lawn tractor (located under the seat) with the illustration abov e. Typ e “ A ” batteries are activa ted and are ready to use. Type “ B ” batteries must be filled with battery fluid (acid) and ch arged before they are put into service.
10 NOTE: The seat may hav e been shipped i n a box. Remove t he four screws from the bottom of seat an d place seat in position agai nst t he sea t pi vot brac ket. Follow the directions above t o attach the seat. Quick A djustmen t Seat • Remove th e two bolts from the bottom of the seat and re move the packing straps.
11 To operate the cuttin g deck without mulching, simply remove the mulch plu g by unthreading the plastic wing nut which fastens it to the cutting deck. This will allow the clippings to discharge ou t the side. See Figure 6. Fi gur e 6 Ti re P res su re • The tires on your unit may be over-inflated for shipping purposes .

13 Park ing Brake To set the parking brake, de press the clutch-brake pedal, pull up the park ing brake knob and release th e clutch -brake p edal. It will st ay in the ra ised posit ion. To release the parking brake, depres s and release the clutch-brake pedal whi le pushing down on the parking brake knob.
14 SECTION 5: OPERATING Y OUR LAWN TR ACTOR WARNING: G o up and d own slopes, not across. Avoid su dden turn s. Do no t operate the unit wh ere it could sl ip or tip o ver . If the tr a ct o r st op s wh i l e go in g uphill, stop the b lade(s) and reverse down the hill slowly.
15 Setting Cutting Heigh t • Select the position for the lift lever wh ich gives the desired cu tting height. Move the deck lift indicator (if so e quipped) so that the lift lever can be returned to the same po siti on after it is raised. • Move the dec k wheels (if so equipped) to the hole location so the whe els are 1/4 inch above the ground.
16 • Replace the trans mission panel and park ing brake knob . • Remove the blocks from under the frame and test the operation o f the t ractor. Deck L eveling If the tractor is cutting grass unevenly, level the dec k following instructions in the Asse mbly Section.
17 Figu re 19 • Remove th e c o tter pin and flat washer which secures the adjust ment ferrule to the tractors right axle. • Two t urns at a t ime, thread the adjustment ferrule toward the right, front ti re to lengthen the tie rod. Or, thread the adju stment ferrule away from the right, front tire to shorten the tie rod.
18 • Connect the oth er jump er cab le t o the neg ative terminal of the good bat tery, then to the frame of the unit with the dead batt ery. WARNING: Failu re to u se this procedure could cause sparking, and the gas in either battery cou ld explode.
19 • Remove th e blade from the spindle. Figu re 21 Sharp ening B lade • Remove th e cutting blades by following the directions in the preced ing section.
20 Deck B elts (4 6" D eck) • Place the lift lever all the way forward. • Disconne c t the sp r ing which is at t ache d to a bracket on the transaxle insi de the right rear wheel .
21 NOTE: DO NO T use high pressure water spray or steam to clean t he hydrostatic transmission . WARNING: Disconnect spark plug wire an d g rou nd ag ai ns t eng ine bef ore performi ng any adjus t me nts, r epairs o r maintenance w ork on the tractor.
22 • Whe n in sta lling a tire t o the rim, be c ertai n rim i s clean and f ree of rust. Lubricate both the tire and rim gene r o usly. Never in flate to ove r 30 p.s.i. to seat beads. WARNING: Exc essive pressu re (over 30 p.s.i.) w hen seati ng beads ma y cause tire/ rim assemb ly to burst with f orce sufficient to cause seriou s injury.
