9 OPERA TING INSTR UCTIONS A.General 1. When Mowing: a. K eep adults , children, and pets aw ay fr om the area to be m o wed. b . Wh en operating this mower , in the forward direction, do not allo w the steer ing le vers to retur n to Neutral on th eir own.
10 d. Do not oper ate with discharge side of the mow er towa rd streets, b uildings, p lay - grounds , parking lots, othe r machines, ani - mals, an d other people. e. Av oid operation or use extreme care if the traction su rface is wet , unstable, or slip - pery .
11 5. Electric Blade Clutch Switc h: (See Figure 1.) Located on the right side of the mo wer beside the ignition s witch. This is an “on/off ” push pull s witch that controls the electric bl ade clutch which supplies power to the cut - ting bl ades through the PT O.
12 C.Initial Adjustments 1. Check the flu id levels and tires: Note: These checks should be made daily , befo re star ting the engine. a. Fuel: Using a good gr ade of #2 Diesel fuel, fill the fuel tank (bes ide the engi ne on the left or right side of the mo wer).
13 f . Raise t he mowing deck to the transpor t position usin g the transpor t lev er . g. Use the transp or t lev er to lower the mow - ing dec k to the cutting position and repeat step “b . ” abov e to mak e sure that the desired cutting height has been attained .
14 mov e f orward — release the lap ba rs and the machine should sto p. The more that the lap bar s are mov ed towa rd the front of the ma chine, the f aster th e machine will mov e in the forw ard direc - tion. Rele ase the lap bars a nd the machine should stop tr av eling for ward.
15 mow er is much more maneuver able and much less f atiguing to operate . Howe v er , get - ting used to the finger tip control of the z ero- tur ning-radius mower takes some practice. W e strongly recommend that you locate a “test area” where y ou can operate the mo wer f or about 30 minutes without being disturbed.
16 MAINTENANCE AND SER VICE W ARNING: Disconnect the spark pl ug wires or r emo ve the key fr om the ignition to prevent the engine from accidentally starting before performing any maintenance on th is mower . A. Mower Dec k 1. Removing the Mo wer Deck: a.
17 a. Set the parking brak e. b . Clean any debris fr om the blades. K eep bl ades shar p and free of b uild up at all times. c. Sharpen bl ades ev enly at the original 30° angle to maintain balanced cut ting blades . Do not sharpen the underside of the bl ades.
18 1. Adding Hydraulic Oil (use Shell Rim ula 15W40) a. Place the Mower on a le v el surface and engage the pa rking brake. b. Stop the engine and remo ve the key fro m the ignition switch. c. Clean the area around the Hydr aulic Oil fill neck. d. Remove the h ydraulic fill cap and check the le vel.
19 c. Store the batter y with a full charge . A dis - charged batter y will fr eeze (ref er to the table belo w). d. Recharge battery when e v er the specific gra vity value is less than 1.225 3. Battery Remov al Wa r n i n g : When removing the cables from the batter y follo w these steps to avoid a short between the wrench and the frame.
20 each slot as th e air gap adjustment nut are tightened. The correct adjustment occurs when slight contact with the f eeler gage occurs. Engage the BBC (PT O Clutch) a couple of times , and re-chec k the air-gap . If it is not b etween the specs l isted on page 24, repeat the ad justment procedure.
21 2. Leaking T ires: When a flat tire occurs , repair or replace immed iately . The nor mal pro cedure is to remov e t he wheel and replace it with a spare. T ake the leaking tire to a maintenance area and repair . If a tire is getting soft, park the mow er on the nearest le vel, pa ved area.
22 brak e rod. This will tighten the brak e about .040 inch. Normally , both brak es should be adjusted and equal amount. 2. Repair: The mow er is equipped with drum brak es and will not nor mally require mainte - nance. If the y are not working properly , please contact your service center .
23 Mow er begins to creep, adju st the Steeri ng Le vers . If the mow er creeps, first determine whether it creeps to the right or left side and which direc - tion the mower mov es — to the front or the rear .
24 MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE A. Daily Chec ks 1. Before starting engine: a. Ch ec k the fuel lev e l.** b . Check the engine oil le vel.** c. Check the h y draulic oil le vel. d. Check the hydraulic hoses f or leaks, abra - sion, kinks, twists, or a flatte ned condition.
25 . OIL CHAR T Apply a f ew drops of en gine oil or use a spra y lubricant. Apply the oil to both sides of pivot points . Wipe off any e xcess. Star t engine and operate mo wer briefly to insure that oil spreads ev enly .
26 P erformance Adjustments A. High Speed T racking Adjustment If mow er tracks to one side wi th both lap bars in fully f orward position: 1. Chec k air pressure in all four tires: a. Pressure should be within specif ied ranges and balanc ed side-to-side.
27 C. Deck Corner Ball Wheel Roller Settings 1. Matching the set heights of the ball rollers on the f our cor ners of the mo wer deck to the desired cut height will pre vent edg e scalping and minimize an y side-to-side variance in cut height. 2. There are three height adjustment holes in the brac ket that moun t the ball rollers to the deck.
28 F . Deck le veling Procedure 1. P ar k the mow er on a flat p a ved surf ace, engage the parki ng brak e, shut off the engine, remov e the ke y from the igniti on s witch, disconnect the spar k plug wires and using the transpor t lev er , low er the mowing deck in to the 4" height of cut position.
29 Fuel & Lube Specifications A.Fuel Specifications Use good quality fuel to get the correct power and per - formance from the engine. The recommended f uel spec - ification for Caterpillar engines is shown below. Cetane number 45 minimum Viscosity 2.
