5 13. Mow only in daylight or good artificial light. 14. Do not operate the machine while under the influence of alc ohol or drugs. 15. Watch for traffic when oper ating near or cr ossing road ways. 16. Use extra care when loading or unload ing the machine into a trailer or truck.

10 A. LOW OIL INDICATOR This indi cator wil l illuminate when the eng ine oil level is low. If this indica tor illumin ates, stop the tractor imm e- diately and check the engine oil level . If the oil level is within the operating ra nge, but the l ight remains on, contact your Cub Cadet deal er.
11 I. BRAKE PEDAL The brak e pedal i s located a t the fron t of the rig ht run- ning boar d above the fo rward control pedal. Pr ess down to st op the tracto r and disenga ge the cruise con- trol. T he brake pedal mu st be fu lly dep ressed to acti - vate the sa fety interlock switch when sta rting the tractor.
12 Q. SAFETY INTERLOCK SWITCHES This trac tor is equ ipped w ith a safet y interloc k syst em for the prote ction of the operato r. If the interlock sy s- tem should ev er malfunctio n, do not operate the trac - tor. Contac t your authorized Cub Cadet Dealer.

16 5. Turn the ingn ition key to the “START ” position and hold unti l the engine start s; ho wev er , d o n ot c ra nk the en gine con tinuousl y for m ore than 10 second s at a ti me . Once the engi ne starts, gr adually ad just the cho ke as needed t o keep t he engine running until warmed up , then push the cho ke control all the way in.
17 DRIVING ON SLOPES Ref e r t o the SL O P E G A U G E on pa g e 5 7 t o h e lp determin e slopes wh ere you may not oper ate safely. WARNING Do not mo w on inc lines with a slope in excess of 15 de grees (a rise o f approx imately 2-1/2 feet every 1 0 feet).
18 SECTI ON III. ADJUSTM ENTS This se ction co ntains ad justment informat ion fo r the Model 217 6 tractor. A djustmen t informat ion for the 42 - inch deck is loc ated i n Se ction V – M ower Deck beginnin g on page 3 3. ADJUSTING THE SEAT WARNING Do not adjust the s eat when the tractor is moving.

20 2. Pivo t the ends of the axle up and down to c heck for binding. If the axle is bindin g, loosen the lock nuts (See Fig ure 14) unti l bindin g is eliminate d. Figure 14 3. 22 CARBURETOR ADJUS TMENTS WARNING When ma king adjustme nts to the carb uretor while the eng ine is runnin g, disengag e the PTO clutch and engage the brak e pedal l ock.
23 SECTION IV. MAINT ENANCE ENGINE MAINTENANCE Maintenan ce, repa ir, or re placemen t of the emi ssion control devices and sy stems, which ar e being done at the custo mer’s expe nse, may be performed b y any engin e repair es tablishmen t or indi vidual.
24 ADDING OIL CAUTION Never over fill the en gine crank case. T he engine may overhe at and/or da mage may r esult if the crankc ase is bel ow the “L OW” mark or over the “FULL” ma rk on the di pstick. NOTE For best results, fi ll to th e “FULL” ma rk on the dipstick as opposed to adding a given qua ntity of oil.
25 While th e engine o il is warm , proceed as follows : NOTE A 12 inch l ength of flex ible tubin g is suppl ied in the owner ’s manual pa ckage an d should be used to dr ain the e ngine oil. 1. Plac e the tractor on a level surface and engage the brake pe dal lock.
26 CHECKING TRANSMISSION OIL LEVEL NOTE Check the oi l level on ly while the engine is stopp ed and the tr actor is level. Check t he oil level o f the tr ansmissi on case before each us e to see that it is fill ed to the correct level.
27 2. Cle an the area arou nd the transmi ssion drai n plug to prevent de bris from enteri ng the transmissi on case . Remove the drai n plug and al low the transmiss ion oil to drain i nto a clean containe r having a capa city of mo re than 6 quarts .

29 SPARK PLUG WARNING To avo id poss ible i njury, be sure the eng ine is off and has cool ed before making any adjustme nts or rep airs. NOTE Remove all dirt from aroun d the spark pl ug before r emoving . To remove the spark plugs, al ways use a spar k plug wrench.
30 FUSES Always use the same ca pacity fuse fo r replaceme nt. Refer to SPECI FICAT IONS . If the electrical syst em does not f unction, che ck the fu ses. To repla ce a fuse, pull the old fuse from the fuse holde r and insta ll the new fuse. GENERAL BATTERY INFORMATION WARNING a.
31 BATTERY REMOVAL OR INSTALLATION WARNING Battery posts, ter minals and re lated access ories co ntain lead and le ad compo unds. Wash Hand s af ter h andl ing. When rem oving the battery, dis connect the battery cables i n the follo wing o rder to a void arcing and the re sulting sparks : Battery Removal: 1.
32 TIRES Keep th e pneumatic tires prop erly inflat ed. Over- inflat ion will caus e operator di scomfort. Und er-inflatio n will cause short tire l ife. Improper ly inflat ed tires will al so affect the le veling of the mow er deck and quality of c ut.

36 NOTE Gauge whee ls are in tended to preve nt scalping of the law n, and a re not mean t to be us ed to set the cut ting heigh t. Do not run the de ck on the guage w heels. To adjust the hei ght of the gauge whe els, place the tractor on a firm and level sur face.
37 B. REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION OF DECK ASSEMBLY REMOVAL OF DECK WARNING Before rem oving the mower deck , place the PTO sw itch in the “O FF” posit ion, engage the brake pe dal lock, tur n the igni tion key to the “OFF” pos ition and remove the key from the switch.
38 WARNING The exha ust system is HOT . To avoid pe rsonal injury , allow th e engine and exhau st sys tem to cool befor e proceedi ng with the followi ng PTO belt re moval instructi o ns. 4. Open the trac tor hood a nd remo ve the fo rward end of the PT O belt from the PTO cl utch pulley (Refer to Figure 38).

43 WARNING When se rvicing the mow er deck, be carefu l not to cut yo urself o n the shar pened bl ades. Clean the under side of the mower dec k at the end of the mowing s eason or when bu ildup of cu t material on the un derside i s noticed. Also r emove th e belt covers and remo ve any ac cumula ted grass c lippings.
44 SPINDLE DRIVE BELT REPLAC EMENT In order to replace th e spindle drive belt , refer to Figures 58 and 59 and proce ed as fol lows: 1. Remo ve the ha rdware t hat secu res the sp indle belt cover s to the deck . 2. Rem ove the spindle b elt cov ers to e xpose the belt.
45 SECTION VI. OFF-SEASON STORAGE If the machine is to be inoperativ e for a period longe r than 30 days , the follow ing procedur es are recomm ended: WARNING Never stor e the tracto r with fuel i n .
