1 I NTRODUCTION The 3Com â T okenLink â III PC Card ä netw ork adapter (ref erred to as the 3C689 adapter in this guide) lets you connect a DOS or OS/2 â computer to an IEEE 802.

3 U SING THE A UTO L INK F EA TURE FOR N ET W ARE The AutoLink f eature for NetW are configures the adapter as a NetW are DOS ODI client. The Aut oLink installation steps are depicted in Figur e 3-1.

Avoiding Memory Manager Conflicts 3-3 A voiding Memory Manager Conflicts If you are using a memory manager on your computer (all computers running Windows have a memory manager such as EMM386 or its equivalent), you need to inf orm the memor y manager of the memory used by the 3C689 adapter .

4 S T ANDARD I NST ALLA TION AND C ONFIGURA TION This chapter describes how t o configure your 3C689 adapter using the steps depicted in Figur e 4-1. Figure 4-1 Standard Installation and Configurati.
4-2 C HAPTER 4: S TANDARD I NSTALLATION AND C ONFIGURATION The adapter can be configured aut omatically or manually . Automatic configuration selects configuration values for the adapter . Manual configuration allows you to select the resources yourself .
Using Auto Configuration 4-3 2 Use a text editor to edit the C ONFIG.SYS file on your computer . 3 Exclude the memory range that the 3C689 adapter is using. F or example, type this line into the device section of the new C ONFIG.SYS file: device=c:windowsemm386.

This step configures the I/O Base A ddress and the Interrupt Request Lev el to settings that do not conflict with any other device on your computer .
Changing Configuration Settings 4-5 Changing C onfiguration Settings T o manually change the configuration settings, follow these steps: If you have loaded C ard and Socket Ser vices, you will not be able to change Interrupt Request Lev el, MMIO Base Address, and CIS Memor y as Card Services manages these values for you.

Pr ess [F1] for information about the settings . 5 Continue this proc edure with any other parameters that you want to change .

6-6 C HAPTER 6: T ROUBLESHOOTING 4 Press [Ent er] to start the tests. Each test is set up to run once unless you specify otherwise. The test results ar e displayed on the screen with “P assed ” or “F ailed” in the Results column.
Using the TokenDisk Diskette Diagnostic Program 6-7 2 Press [ T ab] to move fr om field to field and highlight any field within the T est Setup dialog box. Within the Group Select area, use the arrow keys to highlight Group 1 or Group 2. Use the <Enable Group> or <Disable Group> command buttons to enable or disable a group of tests.
6-8 C HAPTER 6: T ROUBLESHOOTING Adapt er Statistics and Inf ormation Use the adapter statistics and information f eature to view statistics of adapter operation and current adapter configuration. Adapter S tatistics Use the V iew pull-down menu and select Adapter Statistics , or press [F9] from the main screen.

6-10 C HAPTER 6: T ROUBLESHOOTING 6 Install the adapter in another functioning computer and run the tests again. If the adapter passes, your computer ma y be defective.
A A BOUT C ARD S ERVICES Card Services coordinates the 3C689 adapter access to sockets and system resources , including device drivers, utilities, and application programs. Card Ser vices sets the I/O Base Address , Interrupt Request Lev el, and the memor y segments for the 3C689 adapter .

B S PECIFICA TIONS This appendix describes the specifications and configuration options for the 3C689 adapter . Cabling The 3C689 adapter supports industr y-standard token ring cabling that follows IEEE 802.5 specifications . Use T ype 3 (UTP) or T ypes 1 or 6 (STP) cabling.
