Fibre Operat ion 8-1 Fibre Operation 8.1 Overv iew This chapter describes the Fibre-specific functions a vailable since firmware release 3.21 and ab ove. Optional func tions have been implemented for operations using Fibre channel and access control under multiple-host environments such as Stora ge Area Network.
Infort rend 8-2 8.2 M ajor Concerns Most of the configuration options in this chapter a re directly relate d to controller redundancy. Joining two controllers into a dual-active pair can eliminate most possible points of failure.
Fibre Operat ion 8-3 performa nce. 2. Host–side dual loop is passively supported and requires the support of multi-path softwa re on the host computer.
Infort rend 8-4 8.3 Supported Features Fibre Chip 1Gbit Fibre Channel: Fibre loops (1 Gbit FC-AL ) comply with the following standards: 1. (FC-PH) X 2.230:1994, 2. (SCSI-FCP) X 3.269:1996, 3. (FC-AL-2) Proj ect 1133-D rev.6.5, 4. (SCSI-2) X3.131-1994, 5.
Fibre Operat ion 8-5 Drive IDs: Supported ways to ad dress a Fibre port include Hard a ssigned and Soft assigned. The controller supports automatic loop ID assignment on drive channels. A hard loop a ddress ID c an be assigned to disk drives by enclosure ju mper setting.

Redundant Controller 10-1 Redundant Controller 10.1 Operation Theory Sample topologies using redunda nt controllers ca n be found in the Hardware Manual that came with your controller or subsystem. The proceeding discussions will focus on the theories and the firmwa re conf iguration of a redundant controller system .
Infort rend 10-2 10.1.1 Setup Flow chart Figure 10 - 1 Redundant Controller Conf i guration Flow chart NOTE that some of Infortre nd’s dual- controller c onf igurations come with pre-set IDs for users’ ease of configuration. It is, h owever, always best to check these IDs before proceedin g with configuration.
Redundant Controller 10-3 The physical conne ction between re dundant c ontrollers should be similar to the one shown above . The basic c onf iguration rule s a re: 1. All channels should be connected to both controllers as d iagramme d above o r stru ng across via a comm on backpl ane.
Infort rend 10-4 The basic conf iguration rule s a re: 1. All channels should be connected to both controllers as d iagramme d above. 2. To reduce the chance o f downtime, more th an one hub or switch can be used to connec t to host c omputer for path r e dundancy.
Redundant Controller 10-5 3. W ill those storage volumes be accessed in a multi-host or multi-path configura tion? 4. F ault Tolerance: Enabling the controllers for transparent failover and failback.

Redundant Controller 10-7 Drive Channel: Since a ll channels ar e strung betwee n two controller s, ea ch channel is connected to two chip pr ocessors, a nd each proc essor must occupy one channel ID. In redundant mode, both a Primary and a S e c ondary ID must be pr e sent on drive cha nne ls.
Infort rend 10-8 distributed across two hos t ports and managed by both controllers. Figure 10 - 6 Mapping Sy stem Drives (IDs) ! Some operating systems do not read multiple LUNs under single ID. As dia grammed a bove, you may ha ve the host channel to present several IDs and map logical configura tions to these IDs.
Redundant Controller 10-9 How does Failover and Failback Work? A . Channel Bus Below is a sample illustra tion of the redundant controller opera tion: Figure 10 - 7 R edundant Controll er Channel Bus The host computer is conne cted to both the Primary and the Seconda ry controller s.

Redundant Controller 10-11 B. Controller Failover and Failback In an unlikely event of controller failure, the surviving controller will acknowledge the situation and disconnec t with the faile d controller. The surviving controller will then behave as both controllers and serve all the host I/O requests.
