2 1 Overview This guide is designed to help you quickly set up and use your Cisco 1040 S ensor (Cisco 1040). A Cisco 1040 is a shelf-top unit that connects to the network and obtains Power over Ethernet (PoE) through a Cisco Catalyst switch. It is easy to connect your Cisco 1040.
3 2 Preparing to Connect Your Cisco 1040 This section describes tasks that you must perform the first time you set up your network to support Cisco 1040 operations. If you have not alrea dy completed the following tasks, it is a dvisable to complete them so that your Cisco 1040 becomes ful ly operational minutes after you connect it.
4 Figure 1 Cisco 1 040 Cable Connections—Front P anel Figure 2 shows the connection on the rea r panel of your C isco 1040 for an external, sep arately certified AC/DC power supply , for use if IEEE 802.3af-compliant PoE is not available. See Cable Specifications, page 12 .
5 Cisco 1040 Port Usage This section provides a list of ports used by the Cisco 1040, for your reference. Selecting and Configuring a Cisco Catalyst Switch T o connect the Cisco 1040, you need a Ci sco Catalyst sw itch with the following: • A port that supports IEEE 802.
6 Step 1 Place the Cisco 1040 on top of the appropriate Cisco Catalyst switch . Note The minimum height necessary to install the Cisco 1040 is 5.08 cm (2 in.). The installation of the unit should not restrict the airflow around the d evice. When operating the unit, ensure that no objects are p laced on top of the unit.
7 Understanding the Stat us Indicator Light The status indicator light on the front panel of a Cisco 1040 indicates what the Cisco 1040 is currently doing. The following table lists the conditions that the status indicator light can be in and places the conditions in startup sequence order .
8 Using the Cisco 1040 Web Interface Y ou can open a web interface to view information stored on a Cisco 1040 as foll ows. Step 1 In your browser , enter http://< IP address or DNS name > where IP address is the address of your Cisco 1040 and DNS name is the DNS name for the Cisco 1040.
9 • Last Updated —The last time that this configur a tion file was updated on the Serv ice Monitor system. • CDPGlobalRunState —States whether CDP is enabled (true) or disabled (false). • SyslogPort —States the port protocol (UD P) and po rt number used for sending syslogs to Service Monitor .
