5 EN W arning A C Adaptor Before going out, be sure to unplug the pow er cord/AC adaptor from the power outlet and put it in a place aw ay from objects used by animals and pets. An animal or pet che wing on the power cord/A C adaptor can cause it short, leading to the r isk of fi re and electric shock.
6 EN Caution A C Adaptor/USB Cable Misuse of the AC adaptor/USB cab le creates the risk of fi re and electric shock. Make sure y ou observe the points below . • Nev er locate the AC adaptor/USB cab le near a stove or other heating device. • When unplugging from the wall outlet, grasp the AC adaptor/ USB cable plug.
7 EN Caution Unstable Locations Nev er place the product on an unstable surf ace, on a high shelf, etc. Doing so can cause the product to fall, creating the risk of personal injury . Loading and replacing batteries The springs inside of the battery compar tment have sharp edges.

10 EN Installing the Software Important! • Be sure to install the software on y our computer before connecting the Printer. Y ou may experience prob lems with operation if you install the software after connecting. • Exit all other programs currently running on your computer bef ore installing the software.
11 EN 4. If a restart message appears, click Ye s . • This restarts your computer. • T o cancel installation, click Cancel . • Attempting installation while an anti-virus program is running may cause the anti-virus program to display an error or w arning message on your computer .

13 EN P ower Requirements Y our printer can be powered using the specifi ed AC adaptor or b y commercially availab le alkaline batteries. • Before using the printer , be sure to read the inf ormation under "Safety Precautions" (pages 4 through 7).
14 EN Connecting the Printer to a Computer Be sure to install the printer software on your computer bef ore connecting the printer to it. Important! 1. Start up Windo ws and then connect a USB cable* to a USB port on the computer. * Use a commercially availab le cable (A-microB type) that complies with USB standards.
15 EN T urning Po wer On and Off ■ T o turn po wer on Press ON . • For inf ormation about how to adjust the display contr ast and to change the backlight setting, see page 51. Main menu ■ T o turn po wer off Press OFF . • Check to mak e sure the printer display is blank.
16 EN Loading and Removing a T ape Car tridge A tape cartr idge is required when printing tape labels. Y ou should use only the special tape cartr idges that are specifi ed for this printer . • This printer supports the following tape widths: 6mm ( 1 / 4 "), 9mm ( 3 / 8 "), 12mm ( 1 / 2 "), 18mm ( 3 / 4 "), 24mm (1").
17 EN 5. Set the tape cartridge in place. • T aking care not to pull on the ink ribbon, pass the tape and ink ribbon between the print head and the rubber roller (illustration below). Press down on the tape cartridge until it clicks securely into place.

19 EN 4. Input text. • Here, we will input "Business Report". • For inf ormation about how to input text, see page 41. ■ Confi guring Print Format Settings Pressing FORM while inputting text displa ys a menu f or confi guring the print format settings (page 29).
20 EN 4. Press the arrow key . 5. Specify a cut mode. • Cut modes are explained in the tab le below . Select this mode: T o do this: CONT . HALF CUT Print without cutting the backing paper between labels. FULL + HALF CUT Cut between labels. FULL CUT Print on iron-on transfer tape.
21 EN Exiting T e xt Creation and T ape Printing 1. When the screen shown abov e is on the display , select EXIT and then press SET twice. • This returns to the screen shown below . Printing Precautions Important! • Nev er turn off printer power while printing is in progress.
22 EN ■ Four cut modes The printer has four cut modes. • T o specify a cut mode, perform step 5 under "Printing a Label" (page 20). • Note that the cut method and margin length depends on the margin settings.
23 EN P art 3 - Creating a Label Label Creation Basics Y ou can use your printer to create the types of labels described below . • F ree design label (page 28) Enter any text y ou want to include in y our label. • Numbered label (page 23) Create labels that include an automatically incremented number .
24 EN Important! Numbered label printing continues for the specifi ed number of copies . T o avoid running out of tape during a print operation, check before hand to ensure that the tape cartr idge being used has suffi cient tape remaining. 1. On the main menu, select NEW and then press SET .
25 EN Creating an Index Label Index labels come in handy when managing fi les, etc. Y ou can also use any of the canned phrases that are built-into printer memory . Index Label Formats Y ou can choose from among the four inde x label formats below , depending on your fi ling system and desired te xt orientation.
26 EN Creating an Index Label Using Canned Phrases Y ou can use the canned phrases built into printer memory to create an index label. 1. P erform steps 1 through 2 of the procedure on page 25. 2. Select the desired canned phrase type and then press SET .
27 EN Creating a Large Label by Combining Smaller Parts (Large Label) Y ou can print multiple par ts and then assemble them into a large, m ulti-part label. Example: T o create a sign consisting of two par ts Important! • Make sure that a 12mm ( 1 / 2 ") wide or wider tape cartridge is loaded in the printer.
28 EN 2. Input the second line of text. Character size adjusted according to number of lines. Created Label Layout (Imager) Line break symbol (not printed) • T o delete a line break, press to delete the line break symbol. Y ou can not delete a line break symbol by pressing .
29 EN 1. Input the text f or the fi rst bloc k. 2. Press FUNCTION and then press . • This makes the input te xt a bloc k. 3. Input line 1 of the next b lock's te xt, press , and then input line 2. • T o delete a block indicator ( ), move the cursor to the indicator y ou want to delete and then press .
30 EN Setting Item Description DIRECTION Specifi es either vertical or horizontal text. ALIGN Specifi es alignment ( LEFT , EQU AL , CENTER , RIGHT ) of the text within a b lock. → page 33 PITCH Specifi es the space between characters in the range of 0 to 31.
31 EN Setting Item Description BLOCK-ALIGN Specifi es the label over all block alignment. → page 33 • This setting is valid only when FIX is selected f or the T APE LENGTH setting. Available settings are: LEFT , EQU AL , CENTER , RIGHT . 5. After all of the settings are the way y ou want, press SET .

Specify the length of the block and then press SET . • Direct input of values is also supported. • The length of each bloc k and the number of input characters aff ects how the label is printed. Y ou can chec k the status of the printout by looking at whether the display ed block length is enclosed in br ackets as described below .

37 EN Adding a Frame to a Label Y ou can add one of a variety of different frames (page APP-5) to a free design label. 1. Input text. 2. Press FRAME. 3.

40 EN P art 7 - Using a Built-in Logo Inserting a Built-in Logo into a Label The printer has a number of built-in labels that include logos and text f or retail and offi ce use that you can print. Sample Print • For inf ormation about the printer's built-in logos, see the Built-in Logo List (page 57).
41 EN 5. Select the print size, enable or disable mirror image printing, and then press SET . • Y ou can also pr int multiple tapes and later assemble them into a large label. F or information about print sizes, see page 41. • When printing a large label, select 2 PIECES (two tapes), 3 PIECES (three tapes), or 4 PIECES (four tapes).

Press and then press the key for the symbol y ou want to input. Inputting Other Symbols The printer has a collection of built-in symbols divided among fi ve groups .
43 EN Editing and Deleting T e xt Deleting a Single Character ■ Deleting the Character to the Left of the Current Cursor P osition 1. Move the cursor to the char acter to the right of the character you want to delete and then press . ■ Deleting the Character at the Current Cursor P osition 1.
44 EN Changing the Font Y our printer suppor ts the fonts below . Font Example Font Example SANS-SERIF POP SANS-SERIF RND SLAB SERIF ROMAN BORDEA UX HEA VY COURIER CURSIVE • When a font other than SANS-SERIF or R OMAN is being used some numbers, Greek characters , and Russian characters will still be printed using SANS-SERIF or ROMAN.

Select the range of text where y ou want to apply the character style setting and then press SET . • If ALL is selected for the F ree Design Label setting of the selected range of text, simply press SET . • If you selected something else f or a free design label, use steps 5 and 6 to specify a range of text.
46 EN Removing a T ext Eff ect 1. Press . 2. Select CANCEL and then press SET . • If you w ant to remove a single te xt effect from te xt where multiple te xt effects are applied, select the te xt effect to be remo ved and then press SET . 3. Select CHARACTER and then press SET .
47 EN Creating, Editing, or Deleting a Phrase Memory Record 1. Press EDIT . 2. Select MAKE and then press SET . • If there is no text in the te xt input area, go to step 4. • Here, we will select EDIT and then press SET to edit an existing e xpression.
48 EN Copying and P asting Input T ext Copying T ext 1. While inputting text, press COPY . 2. Move the cursor to the fi rst char acter of the text y ou want to copy and then press SET . 3. Move the cursor to the last char acter of the text y ou want to copy and then press SET .
49 EN 4. Create a user character . Function Operation Move the cursor . Use arrow ke ys. Make the dot at the current cursor position black. Press 1 (black). • This will cause 1 BLA CK to be highlighted on the display . Make the dot at the current cursor position white.
50 EN Editing an Existing User Character 1. Press USER CHR . 2. Select EDIT and then press SET . 3. Select the user character you want to edit and then press SET . 4. P erform the steps from step 4 of the procedure under "Creating a User Character from Scratch" on page 49.

53 EN User Maintenance A dirty pr int head or rubber roller will make proper label printing impossible. P erform the procedure below to clean the print head and the rubber roller as required. Important! Use a cotton swab or some other soft object to clean the print head and the rubber roller.
54 EN • The printer doesn't print. • P ower turned off during printing. • Batteries are dead or you are using the wr ong type of batteries. • Y ou are using the wrong type of AC adaptor . → Use the specifi ed A C adaptor or replace the batteries with new ones (sold separately).
55 EN Error Messages • ILLEGAL CHARA CTERS! • Y ou are attempting to input and print characters that are not allowed for the bar code you are printing. → Re-input using proper characters. (page 39) • LINK ERROR! CHECK ALL CONNECTIONS! • The USB cable is not connected securely .
56 EN • THIS IS THE WRONG TYPE OF T APE CARTRIDGE! • The tape compartment cover is not closed securel y . → Close the cover securely . (page 17) • The data you are trying to print or recall is not compatible with the type of tape cartridge loaded in the printer.
